Sorry guys, can you at least TRY on some of the pronunciations…?? like who tf is akaji? Maybe the ao part is hard to pronounce, but at least say akiji or something. Edit: everyone, stop coming for me. Micro aggressions are a thing. And not trying to pronounce foreign names right IS a micro aggression. It may seem minor to you, and it is, that’s why it’s called MICRO aggression. I agree i could’ve worded my comment better, but I’m not “having a full blown meltdown”. I’m not “being dramatic”. I was just calling it out. Y’all would die for your fav creators, holy shit. I’m a fan of theirs too, I’m on here, i literally pay to see their content. I was just a little frustrated with this ONE thing. And instead of explaining it to me, or trying to make good argument against me, you guys tell me to touch grass? Seriously? Thankfully one person did reply with an explanation, but seriously… stop coming for me. Another person literally replied “no amount of correcting them is gonna change their pronunciations”. Kokoro and Chimney's whole deal is detailed in an SBS, but since you aren't reading those, here is the basic gist: When Kokoro was younger, she admired Tom and came to Water 7 to work with him. During her stay there, she fell in love with and married a human man. They had a half-mermaid son, who then went on to have Chimney with a human woman, making her 1/4 mermaid -- she lacks a tail, but is a naturally gifted swimmer because of her heritage.

They are clearly trying but with how many shows and names they have to follow throughout the week it is extremely easy to mess up syllables especially when they aren't familiar with Japanese. And you clearly understood who they were referring to which is the whole point of language so why get pissy over something so minor?

They are NOT trying. And if they are, not hard enough. How hard is it to pronounce sogeking, for example? They kept pronouncing it as so-jay-king. It is NOT hard to just replace that with so-ge-king. No one has ever pronounced it so-jay-king, it’s just ignorant on their part. And you say they’re not familiar with Japanese, but they clearly know some Japanese words and how to pronounce them. I’m not saying they’re fluent, but they shouldn’t be clueless about how to pronounce some of the words when they’re hearing the words a lot. And this might be minor to you, but it’s literally microagression.

Because not even trying to pronounce the words of a foreign language is micro aggression. I would get it if it was one or few times… everyone makes mistakes. but they just always mispronounce it without getting it right most of the time, and they don’t even acknowledge the fact that they’re mispronouncing it.

It’s a difficult name and the thing is, under this video alone, I’ve already seen like 3 comments about how to pronounce the name, all 3 of them different. So, even the people who complain about how it should be pronounced aren’t agreeing on the same pronunciation. You see how it can get kinda confusing? Do you actually think they do it on purpose, just to piss you off? It’s not like you wouldn’t know who they’re talking about. Also, they know that they mispronounce some names. They’ve acknowledged that more than once. Just my personal opinion but people who actually get mad because someone pronounces a name wrong should maybe get a hobby. Clearly, they have too much free time.

I don’t think aokiji is not a hard name to pronounce, and like i said, the ao part could be hard but they could’ve said akiji at least, not akaji. Micro-aggressions? Really? 😂 Just one of those people who go through life looking for things to get triggered by, huh? I promise you that respectfully asking people to adjust a behavior without having a full blown meltdown is a more effective and less aggravating method to get what you want. Tsatsa - Not everybody processes language the same way. If you paid the same effort to viewing these reactions as you expect of W&S in viewing the anime, you might realize that Wes is 'deaf' to the names verbalized in a show. He gets the (mis)pronunciations from the written text. Your "Sogeking" example is a perfect illustration of this: Wes pronounces Soge with same "g" as an English speaker would say "age", because that's how it's spelled. Steph just follows Wes's lead. Stop tilting at windmills over this. This is NOT a microaggression. If anything, it's probably a handicap. If this bothers you so much that being polite and helping them with pronunciations is beyond you, maybe this isn't the content for you.

After watching their reacts for a few years now I have come to terms with the fact that they are going to pronounce some of the names wrong. No amount of trying to correct them seems to change that. I just accept it and continue enjoying the reacts!

Tsatsa, im sorry you got attacked so much for this! as someone who has a name that even gets mispronounced by other Asians, I feel you on the frustration 😂 i just think it's very difficult for monolingual people to grasp different linguistic shapes than the ones they know, which is something that doesn't make much sense to multilingual people bc we grew up knowing almost innately how to adjust based on the language, both physically and mentally. this is a skill you really have to work at if you're coming at it later in life, so for wes and steph who aren't actually trying to learn Japanese, you'd be surprised at how genuinely difficult it can be. also, once you 'learn' a word one way it's really hard to unlearn it! personally I'm just glad the mispronunciations are consistent, otherwise I wouldn't know who they were talking about and that would be a much bigger issue lol

Okay. I’m going to have to tell my foreign friends that we have all been micro-aggressioning each other all our lives without realizing it since we all tend to butcher the pronunciation of the other’s respective languages from time to time. One of them STILL mispronounces my name, and I’ve known her for over a decade 😂. Wes and Steph have known Aokiji here and there for just a few weeks. I’m not trying to be a jerk; I just think jumping to subconscious prejudice is a pretty heavy charge to levy on someone, especially when it concerns the name of an infrequent anime character.

Tsatsa - Your whole first post, which you only corrected in order to add arguments to, is an actual aggression, given your usage of profanity and "demanding" CAPS, and now a bunch of argument. Everybody's coming after you because you are coming after Wes and Steph and aggressively implying they don't care about the Japanese language just because they don't understand it. Please read Grasshorse's message twice, because it encapsulates why this isn't a microaggression, any more than a stutter or an accent would be. Demanding someone "hear" words they clearly didn't hear the first 10 times is an unrealistic expectation. The right drama-free approach is to post friendly, polite responses explaining the correct pronunciation. Steph is usually the one that reads the comments, so she'll pass the message off to Wes eventually. Also, as a side note, your timing was horrendous. You were in early and didn't even finish the whole episode before posting. So people coming in to watch one of the most memorable episodes of ANY anime EVER didn't see people gushing about One Piece, but instead got to read your gripes. That's going to leave a bad taste in anybody's mouth. A good rule of advice in general: before sending negativity in any avenue of life, sit on it for a bit and think about whether it needs to be said, and how it should be said.

Enies lobby is phenomenal. 10/10. And it's a lot of people's favorite arc for good reason. But my favorite arc is still waiting out there. As is the most exciting arc, and the most epic arc. Three different metrics, three different arcs I think are better then everything we've seen so far. Whenever you think One Piece has reached it's peak, there's another, taller peak further on.
