Actuarial Lurker

The husband of Megan's female boss who is part of the "swinging couple" trying to encourage Don and Megan to have group sex is Ted McGinley of Happy Days, Love Boat, Dynasty and Married With Children fame- almost unrecognizable with black hair, heavier, makeup and 60s clothes!.....that's what black coffee is for.....ohh my!

Harry- "At least my accomplishments were in the light of day". Shows that the whole firm knows what Joan did- at least the senior staff. Bert Cooper classic retort: "Mr. Crane, we are unalike in every way". classic followup: Roger: "Should we just fire him before he cashes the check?"

Actuarial Lurker

You spoke too soon in how Don handles this...shows up on set to make Megan feel like a whore, the swinger says "so you like to watch", and then he has to cap it off with saying "you know who gets paid for doing that"- basically calling Megan a whore. Since women either are Madonnas or whores to Don- hence the whorehouse flashback in the prior episode

Peggy steals Don's line: "If you don't like what people are saying change the conversation"....her Ketchup ad accuses other brands of being imitators while Peggy IS the one imitating Don herself with that line...

In your epilogue discussion: Ted wasn't gloating. "Jay Walter Thompson, they bought it in the room". JWT was one of the biggest ad agencies in the world just like McCann who tried to poach Don via Betty being the CocaCola model in Season 1 and who bought the PPL British firm at the end of Season 3. So NEITHER Don nor Ted got the Ketchup account, but Don lost Heinz and Megan's whole beans through history pitch to save that account from season 5 was for nothing....

I wouldn’t be surprised if Kenny told Harry about Herb’s proposal for “a night with Joan,” as a “can you believe this ahole” type story, never thinking that Pete would bring it up to Joan or that she’d agree. Then Harry and Ken would understand what happened when she made partner. I would be surprised if Ken or any of the partners talked about the situation after the fact.

For the epilogue: Dow Chemical is a similar size as Lucky Strike. Henry has half a point- he made Dow look good when the youth culture was protesting the use of Dow's Nepalm in 1967-68...

Actuarial Lurker

I bet that would happen since Harry stayed friends with Kenny in Season 4 before he rejoined. On the other hand Harry was the one Pete blamed for saying that Kenny was riding the John Deere in that diner lunch meeting and spreading gossip that Kenny was marrying Cynthia for money... so I don't know who Kenny thinks less of- Pete or Harry

Chris

Ted walks into a bar and orders an Old Spanish — a drink that doesn’t exist except on 30 Rock. Fun inside joke. Weiner must be a 30 Rock fan.

Chris

Right, Ted doesn’t get the account either. I’m surprised some think Ted is sleazy for the Heinz situation. He heard Ketchup was unhappy so he made a pitch. He doesn’t owe anything to competing agencies.

IThe AuthorityI

Yeah I agree. I don't really feel negatively towards Ted or Peggy about it. I think any other agency would do the same given the opportunity. If anyone should be looked down on, it should be Heinz for poaching ideas with no intention of hiring either of them.

Wait! Is it common in the US to put mustard on hot dogs? In here, mayo and ketchup are the default, I think I never had it with mustard haha

Actuarial Lurker

I'm from NYC and mustard and sauerkraut are the usual items- sometimes chili. It's very regional- people in the Midwest or South frequently use ketchup or regional things like clams in Maine or cheese up by the Rust Belt

This episode always struck me as the first "filler" in the Series...but Joe and Kevin...just wait for Episode 5, 6, and 7- the next 3 are top notch....

Harry is so full of gossip, in this situation it had to have been Kenny. Him and Pete were there when it was brought up and I really don't think Pete would have told Ken that they actually went through with it.

Youtalkingtome

We're going that way with this season. I find that interesting. The deeper we get into Don the more I love this show

Youtalkingtome

You know you talked me into it. It is his job to do exactly what they did. There is a certain level of betrayal though on Peggy's part and on Don's. They should not have been trying to get Ketchup

heheheheheh

Where do you live? I've lived in several European countries and they all have mustard on their hot dogs.

heheheheheh

I don't think the whole firm knew just yet, but I feel they were trying to make a point of Meredith not stepping out in time when Joan asked, because now she overheard the entire conversation, and we know she doesn't like Joan.

You keep talking about Don not getting help the right way. But how many people got help the right way in the 60s? Mental health was suck it up, rub some spit it on it and push it deep down inside. Were reminded that shock treatment was still a viable treatment for depression.

Youtalkingtome

For sure, we've got 2024 goggles on while watching this. Self destruction is really hard to watch sometimes

Jesus

Don: “the most powerful thing you have going for you is the public’s imagination and if you can get into that space your ad can run all day!” Don two seconds later: “you didnt want me to see that? Its a hell of a lot better than letting my imagination run wild” [Imagine by John Lennon starts playing]
