I Am Abassin Zadran

Alison Wright, who plays Martha, was amazing in this episode, and was nominated for an Emmy for her performance. What's also amazing is that she's English, doing a great American accent. They gave us a clue as to the exact date in this episode. When Henry was watching TV, there was an ad for the final episode of "M*A*S*H*", which was shown on Monday, February 28th, 1983. So this was probably in the week before that. (That episode of M*A*S*H* was the most watched television broadcast in American history.)

There's a bigger clue in the title of the next episode of the current timeline, but the MASH setup does fit that timeline :)

Had no idea she was English. She's crushing this role. Gotcha. I've seen a few episodes of MASH here and there. I hear the finale is fantastic

The marrying a local American woman was done by the Russian spies in the 70's and 80's - and most of the women would defend their husbands, and deny that it was true. Not that different for Martha, as far as the denial goes. Chekhov's gun - from Wikipedia - "if a writer features a gun in a story, there must be a reason for it, such as it being fired some time later in the plot" - I think the brilliance in the writing of the gun in Martha's apartment is for people like J&K, that know about it, and identify it as Chekhov's gun immediately.....then the reason for showing it becomes the audience constantly thinking about the gun is there for every...tense...scene in that location, and not necessarily that it was introduced to be used/fired at some point in time. The gun was introduced as a long game automatic tension intensifier every time we're in that apartment. At least - that's how I'm reading it thru 3 | 12

This episode was directed by Christopher Misiano and is his only Directing credit for The Americans. Misiano is best known as one of the three main directors of The West Wing (including Alex Graves and Tommy Schlamme) episodes. I believe these three were the only ones to direct WW season premieres and finales, but I might be wrong on that. I know they directed most of those. In total, he directed 35 different episodes of The West Wing during the shows run.

How did he get the knife on the plane? If you ever watched Lost you'd know......he checked it :) People can do that, right? Lastly - podcasts - if you listen to them in your spare time, it might be worth a listen to "The Americans Podcast" - produced by Slate. It was a real-time podcast, coming out once per episode once the episode aired - so it is spoiler free. I just listed to the one for "Stingers" (the episode where Paige finds out) - was a great listen IMO from the showrunners and how they made decisions etc., plus they had an editor on to discuss his process from beginning to end. Behind the scenes stuff J&K would probably enjoy more than most :). The podcast for this episode had the costume departments "wig lady" to discuss all things wigs too (which coincidently J&K mentioned in this reaction), and how they choreographed Phillip removing the wig in that scene.

Season 3 Finale next week! Originally airing on April 15, 2015, 'I Am Abassin Zadran' is Episode 12 of Season 3 of The Americans. It is the 38th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.5, placing it as the #4 ranked episode of this season and #6 out of all the episodes shown so far.

I would like to ask a serious question for advice on this show. I've tried watching it probably three or four times, but similar to Lord of the Rings, I seem to always lose interest about midway through season 2. The acting and production is obviously phenomenal, but even forcing my way into the beginning of season 3, my mind goes into "Well I know they have 6 seasons, and even with the best writing and acting the "will they/won't they" get caught seems like it will become tedious. Again, I have NO idea about any episodes after the beginning of season 3....but from the last year or whatever, you guys (and your patrons) liking so many really good shows, has made me curious if it's just my stupidity (very likely) or if the show is worth continuing the last 3 or so seasons. Long time listener, first time caller....I'm going to hang up now and listen to your response...

Well it would have been a CIA flight, not PAN-AM, but maybe they were allowed to keep their blades for ceremonial reasons. After all, the CIA trusts these guys, at least trusts that they hate the Russians a whole bunch. I don't know if the assassination of the other tribal leaders was based on anything that really happened, but certainly in-fighting between the Afghan tribes has probably been going on for as long as there have been tribes.

I think it will be a different experience this time around, watching each episode sequentially as part of a community, I certainly had the same experience with the final season of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. Other folks have had varying levels of enjoyment of S4-S5, albeit everybody loves S6. Personally I think all the remaining seasons are very strong, and probably work better back-to-back, rather than having a year in-between. Certainly I consider S5-6 to be more of one long season than two.

I've not seen any of it, but Alison Wright got a part (main cast?) in Snowpiercer on the back of her work in The Americans, deservedly so.

Every time we are in the apartment I am thinking about the gun. It will reappear and if it doesn't, it's a crazy misdirect.

Youtalkingtome

It's freaking Rambo's knife though. That thing was huge! I'm not too worried about it because it's tv but it was jarring. I would love to listen to the costume department talk about the wigs. It's one of my favorite parts of the show.

Youtalkingtome

So I gotta say, I didn't love season 2. I really did in the first half but it fell apart for me. It's still a really good season of tv just not my favorite. Season 3 is absolutely worth watching. I'm as engaged as ever. I haven't anticipated the next season of show in so long. It's great.

Roland Cooke

I think the show goes from strength to strength for the remaining seasons. That's not universally-agreed, but if you enjoyed S3 I think you will very much like S4-6.

Stumbled across this, very cute (and short!) interview with Keri and Matthew after a long day filming the S1 scene where they are fake-kidnapped by their own side. Note this is before K&M were officially a couple, but already their chemistry is so strong. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoS3195d1O8

No Americans for Alex Graves - he did 34 episodes of The WW, but after that has limited himself (assuming it's his choice based on the series he's been doing) to smaller numbers on more shows. Stuff like: The Newsroom - 1 Game of Thrones - 6 (all in seasons 3&4 - you know - the good seasons :)) Shameless - 2 House of Cards - 1 Homeland - 7 The Boys - 1 The Diplomat - 4 (Keri Russell's new Netflix show from one of the WW writers)

If will/they won't they get caught is the only storyline that has your interest, then I can see where 75 episodes of that could get tedious. I haven't looked at it that way because every episode doesn't focus around that drama, the family and human aspect is very prevalent in the front of my mind every episode. It's also the complexities of the storyline combined with the interactions with real 80's stuff and some cool spy type stuff that kept me engaged. My wife says Schitt's Creek became her favorite comedy once they found their groove about middle of season 3. I just didn't want to watch 30 episodes or spend 15 hours (the equivalent of about 6 or 7 long movies) to get to the good stuff - so I totally get where you're coming from. This is my Mad Men when it comes to storytelling. As I said in a previous Mad Men post, the every man is a womanizer storyline got old for me in that series because it seemed to be the impetus for what everybody did, and then the resulting fallout of what everybody else around them did on that show. I guess for me the spy stuff in every episode > womanizing and drinking every episode. I do recognize the storytelling in Mad Men as elite - but I believe the Americans is as well, and putting together a Top 5 series is so exclusive, it was the difference for mine have the Americans in and Mad Men out (barely). And as Roland said - they really really stick the landing at the end, five of the last six episodes are between 9.0 and 9.7 on IMDB, and the one that isn't is an 8.6, which is higher than the average of the first 5 seasons. Matthew Rhys also won the emmy for Season 6, I just came across his win on youtube last week - for that one he beat out Ed Harris, Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Wright, Milo Ventimiglia and Sterling K Brown. 2018 was STACKED.
