The Runaways

Actuarial Lurker

The demise of Ginsburg...another Kubrick reference since he cut off his nipple for Peggy to balance out his bodily fluids just like in Dr. Strangelove

Actuarial Lurker

Not unexpected given being raised in a Nazi death camp

Actuarial Lurker

Megan being petty with Stephanie ... uncalled for..

Actuarial Lurker

I won't spoil the rest of Season 7- "Scout's Honor!"

Actuarial Lurker

The Draper "power move" at the secret meeting....never write off Harry as an ally....Don went off script uninvited to a meeting so what will Cutler do

Actuarial Lurker

Stan was a regular in a spinoff of Roseanne (never watched that given her MAGA politics)

Actuarial Lurker

I agree with Henry - if she is going to be a "political wife) and Henry wants to be NY AG...she needs to be in on the script- like Al Pacino tells Kevin Spacey in Glenngarry Glen Ross- "You Never open your mouth until you know what the shot is"

Chris Warner

Poor Ginsberg, his repressed homosexuality has been hinted at previously in scenes with his father and the gay men in the office.

Actuarial Lurker

Sassy Sally getting back for all the face-slapping and other crap like firing Carla from prior seasons

I forgot how hot 70s California Meagan was. But also - I kinda see why Meagan sent Stephanie on her way: yes some insecurity, but also the legitimate point that “hey I know you think you got this figured out, but Don is a control freak and he’s gonna come over here and take over your life” and then of course the fact that Don takes her for granted

It was still such a strange choice. We haven't really seen Megan act like that. She's always so great! Love that they did this with her character. It was very interesting

I never got the vibe he was actually gay, just very very neurotic. A lot of people with OCD (not that I'm diagnosing him with that specifically, just as an example) have morality-based compulsions where their mind will repeat that they're a bad person in numerous ways. I've read about people with religious/conservative upbringings where that becomes a sexuality obsession, and because this is the 60s I can see that happening to Ginsberg

Knowing where the Megan-Stephanie thing was headed, I paid attention watching the scene. There is definitely a bit of awkwardness from both ladies -- Megan is caught off-guard by her beauty, as you guys noted -- but things are honestly pretty smooth despite that awkwardness. It's not until Stephanie says "I know all his little secrets" that Megan kind of spirals. You can see her turning hostile and argumentative, and even when Stephanie tries to take back her words the damage has been done. Up until that point she was extremely accommodating and nice, the thing that hit at her insecurities was the idea that this woman knows Don more than she does. Makes sense considering this season so far she's felt like Don is constantly escaping her.

That ending with Ginsberg, definitely one of the most shockingly tragic ones. It's especially so given the years we're in. I think at this stage in the 60s we're a little past lobotomies, thank god, but he'll probably be subjected to a lot of electro-shock treatment like we heard about from Beth at the end of S5.

Stan's "You?" and immediate (apparently genuine) regret/embarrassment is one of the best comedic moments of the whole series. I love Don's expression throughout the whole thing, like he's trying not to laugh. We wouldn't have gotten a moment like that if Lou as a character didn't put Don on the same level as the other employees, which I love

tom

"I'm not stupid, I know Italian" is an iconic humorous Mad Men quote. I forgot it happens so late in the show lol

tom

Well, Sally is firmly a teenager now. So as much as we saw her bonding with Betty at the end of S6, it's no surprise we're back to this see-saw of unbridled hostility between the two

tom

Ted didn't run away from Don, he ran away from Peggy and Don gave him his blessing there. Don was awful to him before that though.

Actuarial Lurker

Although he should have coached her...he probably assumed she would be vapid and say "domestic things"...but if he treated her as an intellectual equal then he would tell her before the meetings what his public political positions were and how to steer the conversation away and towards certain subjects

Weird Magic

"Attempted Breeding" - how did Kevin know that was the alternative title for this episode?!?!? :) Originally airing on May 11, 2014, 'The Runaways' is Episode 5 of Season 7 of Mad Men. It is the 83rd episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.5, placing it as the #8 ranked episode of this season and #29 out of all the episodes shown so far.

Robert Bauman

Man it must have been so satisfying for Stan to say that to Lou, guy is still the absolute worst. Also, not the smartest play on Cutler's part to ally himself with Lou. It's obvious none of the staff respect him and his personality just seems so uninspiring that I can't imagine he's great in client meetings. For all of Don's issues you still find yourself rooting for him against those two.

Robert Bauman

You know your marriage isn't in a great place when you're hanging out with Harry Crane instead of your wife lol. Also agree with the Jesus comment above, I find hippie-adjacent Megan extremely attractive for whatever reason (tough episode for her and that marriage though)

tom

I also forgot to mention we see a continuation of Betty grappling with a life's purpose outside of the feminine confines she's lived under up until now. In a previous episode she was talking to her old friend and was confronted with a working woman finding fulfilment outside the home. It made her a little uncomfortable but this episode we get the interesting but kind of pitiful line of telling Henry "I don't know what I'm going to do, but that's a good idea" after he makes a joke about her running for office. So it seems she is indeed thinking about life outside of being a housewife

Hawaiian Shirt Funeral

I've always thought the threesome was Megan trying to show Don that her world could be fun if he'd give it a chance.

Youtalkingtome

Probably. I took it as more of an attempt to try to get him to notice her, in a way he would understand.
