There's a bit more to the real-life story that I will detail later, but the TLDR is that the Martha storyline is based on a large-scale Romeo operation that targeted maybe several dozen(!) women, mainly secretaries within the West German government, NATO, and such. The Romeos would eventually "reveal" to their wives/girlfriends that they worked for Swedish intelligence* or somesuch, and if they were exposed they would be deported, etc, etc. *sound familiar? :D Even when confronted with full evidence of the double betrayal, many of the women refused to believe it, continued to defend their husbands / boyfriends. The operation was orchestrated by the legendary Markus Wolf, head of the East German Stasi's foreign intelligence arm. Wolf was famously the spymaster that John Le Carré based Smiley's nemesis Karla on. > In 1993, Wolf was convicted of treason by the Oberlandesgericht Düsseldorf and sentenced to six years' imprisonment. This was later quashed by the German supreme court, because West Germany was a separate country at the time. <

This episode might contain the fewest amount of words in any episode of any hour long show I've seen. :) Now that checkov's gun is gone....does that mean it will never show up? Originally airing on April 20, 2016, 'The Rat' is Episode 6 of Season 4 of The Americans. It is the 45th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.6, placing it as the #4 ranked episode of this season and #7 out of all the episodes shown so far.
