The Magic of David Copperfield V: The Statue of Liberty Disappears

Even though Elizabeth didn't handle that conversation about EST with Phillip very well, her take on what EST was really about was right on the money. I've mentioned this before, but from my personal experience I can say that EST was all about using valid self-help concepts to manipulate people for their money. I also felt myself to be totally on Elizabeth's side through all of this, in the sense that she was the only one remembering what her job and her role is. She's not there to be a human being, she's there as a tool of the Soviet state, and the people around her are keeping her from doing her job. Though of course, a trip to Epcot couldn't hurt. By the way, peanut butter is a very American cultural experience. Until recently, it wasn't found in most European countries, and certainly not in the Soviet Union. Only after the fall of the Iron Curtain did peanut butter make its way to Russia, in part due to the Peanut Council of America shipping 30 tons of it to Moscow orphanages in 1992. When I lived in Finland in 1982-83, I was shocked to discover they lacked two of my favorite things: peanut butter and root beer. It's a miracle I survived.

Thanks, Jeff! I did not realize the extent to which PB is Americana. That makes a lot of sense, then, for how Philip looked at it: how ingrained in him is his American life? Admittedly, I don't know anything about EST beyond this show, but I appreciate you sharing your experiences with it. Certainly the predatory self-help industry was alive and well in the 80's.

Even today, peanut butter is available here in Europe, but it's uncommon, because people just don't really care for it. I think a lot of the appeal of it for Americans has to do with the childhood memories, the cultural significance, the shared ritual passed down from one generation to the next... It's actually almost exactly the same thing for us with Nutella. First time I heard that Americans don't really have it, I could hardly believe it ; then I realized that if I hadn't eaten it my entire childhood, I probably wouldn't think so highly of it either.

Possibly my favorite episode of the whole show, certainly top five. And the last thirty seconds is just genius writing. What's so brilliant about this show is that it can depict misery and despair, and people being awful, without the audience ever being drugged into that misery and despair. + Gabriel's decision (and the insight to make that decision) was huge. Seven months' break has clearly been a salve for Philip and Elizabeth, maybe not so much for Paige. I'm sure the rest of the show will all be sunshine and flowers! 🤣
