Dinner for Seven

I remember when I was first watching the series and got to this point, I couldn't keep watching. Not because it was bad, but because it was so effective in showing the constant tension in all of the characters' lives that I just couldn't handle it. So I took a break for about a season, got some therapy, and returned to it with a healthier state of mind (meaning I could enjoy the fiction without falling into hopeless despair). All I want is for all these characters to accomplish their goals and be happy, but of course the main characters are ruthless killers, so that's quite an emotional quandary. Finally someone mentioned the movie "Silver Streak" from 1976! I loved that movie as a kid, and I've been surprised that so few people remember it. But then I think about some of the more questionable content, like Gene Wilder in blackface and Richard Pryor playing up the stereotypes for laughs, and I realize maybe it's best left buried in the past.

Kevin watching For All Mankind and The Americans back to back is a quick way to an ulcer. 😀

Philip is aghast about Gaad's death...because he knows it's on him.

A very pregnant Keri Russell holding a salad bowl in front of her, standing next to a very bulgy but non-pregnant Suzy Jane Hunt, was a deliberate wink to the audience. 😀

The "Don Seong Heist" is based on a real Cold War operation(s), which was - unbelievably - even darker than in this show. In the real world, the prelude was the same, but the target of the scam was in a country where abortion was illegal. I think Moscow, but could have been most anywhere, including the USA. One fatal backstreet abortion later and the target is open to multiple levels of extortion...

Another wonderfully uncomfortable dinner scene! 🤣

The treatment of Don and Young-Hee reminds me of this quote from George Smiley: > "Thus we do disagreeable things, but we are defensive. That, I think, is still fair. We do disagreeable things so that ordinary people here and elsewhere can sleep safely in their beds at night. Is that too romantic? Of course, we occasionally do very wicked things"; he grinned like a schoolboy. "And in weighing up the moralities, we rather go in for dishonest comparisons; after all, you can't compare the ideals of one side with the methods of the other, can you, now?" <

Where do these go next? Stan and Oleg are no longer teamed up? Stan and Aderholt investigating the mail robot next? Paige sees her Mom has the skillz to killz Pastor Tim/Alice know FBI lives next door Plus there were storylines not touched at all this episode, like Kimmy and William (Glanders guy), and EST. And don't forget, Philip with the coolest wig ever! So much setup and yet so much not covered with only 2 episodes left this season.

Originally airing on May 25, 2016, 'Dinner for Seven' is Episode 11 of Season 4 of The Americans. It is the 50th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.5, placing it as the #5 ranked episode of this season and #11 out of all the episodes shown so far. P.S. You are officially 2/3 of the way thru, 50 down and 25 to go! It's looking like a 1/22/25 which means Lost will start on 1/29 - can't wait ;)
