So I wouldn't go as far as to say the last two seasons are one extended season, but there's definitely a lot of shared DNA, more than previous seasons. I also think you guys will benefit from not having a 12 month break in the middle. But what actually happened was that FX (John Landgraf) made the inspired decision to enable the showrunners to end the show on their own terms, by greenlighting the final two seasons at the same time. I think (not sure) that was unprecedented. Conversely, a reason to mentally consider S5 and S6 to be one long season is that S5 tends to get less love and S6 gets all the love. 😍

The dig scene is my second-favorite "table read" scene of all time, ten or fifteen minutes without a word of dialogue. Impressive, most impressive. My number one "table read" scene of all time is in the first season of The Wire, so you'll see it soon enough. 🤩

The making of the dig scene is wild, the creators thought it would be straightforward. However the logistics of making a hole in the ground that was safe for filming were outrageous. Ended up costing a LOT of time and money. I think they ended up building three fake holes or something. 🤪

Holy cow. The scene did seem gratuitous, now we know why lol

Youtalkingtome

Can't wait to see that. Point it out when we get to it!

Youtalkingtome

That's a good way of looking at it. Also I'm really glad the studio was able to give them the chance to end properly. You don't see that a lot today.

Roland

I guarantee that I won't need to. 🤩

Was trying to find a way to say it well, but Roland beat me to it. I don't think they are one long season at all, in fact S5 episodes collectively do not average above an 8.0 on IMDB. S5 is a regular season, just like the rest of them....but S6 is consistently outstanding averaging almost a 9. I was trying to figure out why someone would say they are one long season (which has stuck with Kevin) but I think Roland's right. FX did what ABC did for Lost in 2007 - give the showrunners an end date years in advance so they can tell the story in full the way the wanted to. Really makes it easier to stick the landing!

Roland

Exactly so, although with Lost, Damon Lidelof was pushed to create more seasons, and things got messy later on (apparently, still on my to-watch list, although I've been spoiled on the biggest(?) reveal sadly). Whereas the Js got to end The Americans under their own steam.

Weird Magic

For the timeline - can't remember where we were in the last episode but since Gabriel is telling about William's death it must not be too much of a time jump. They did have three "references" we can use to infer timeline - the Olympics (Sarajevo in Feb and LA in Aug), the picture of Chernenko on the wall, and the Agriculture minister saying Chernenko's name, this episode is sometime between Feb and August. Chernenko was elected in Feb 84 and died in March 85, he was followed by Gorbachev.

Weird Magic

I believe Oleg's Dad was the Minister of Trains? Originally airing on March 7, 2017, 'Amber Waves' is Episode 1 of Season 5 of The Americans. It is the 53rd episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8, placing it as the #5 ranked episode of this season and #34 out of all the episodes shown so far.

I actually appreciated how they showed the difficulty of digging that hole, which reminded me of this bit from comedian Nate Bargatze: youtube.com/watch?v=DCzbTSvzjZA

Youtalkingtome

For sure, as the episode went along, we both figured out not too much time has passed.

Youtalkingtome

I can't remember what his role was. That does sound right though
