Memorial Day

Jake

rumors of the west wing's death in season 5 were greatly exaggerated

I do wonder a why US special forces, or even Israeli special forces raid was never floated as an option. I get that time was a factor but it seemed like they were spending most of a day or more trying other options and waiting to make a decision. Feels pretty surreal that all these locations they mention in Gaza are names we're very familiar with in 2024.

Youtalkingtome

Absolutely. Nothing drives home the point that this is a nightmare that has been ongoing without resolution for many years quite like this.

I love how you both appreciated that Tolkien reference! Such a great line. The final scene was actually filmed before the Orioles-Blue Jays game on April 22, 2004. When this first aired, I really didn't like what was happening with Leo. But then I later realized it was a progression for his character that really does ring true, as I think you'll see.

Josh took the news from the surgeon especially hard because, if you remember from earlier in season 2, Josh's father died from a pulmonary embolism.

Joy M

In the situation room they said it could lead to US casualties. Also, no one wants to see US servicemen captured and paraded around like trophies by a terrorist organization, or worse beheaded on tv. (Sorry to go to such a dark place)

Joy M

BTW the actor that Josh talks to in the German restaurant plays the head of a terrorist organization on Homeland. He was amazing in that role.

Laura Room

Yes, that's how we know that he knows what a pulmonary embolism is. Heartbreaking

- Sudden Death is great and you should definitely see it. - I'm not wild about the Dramatic Medicine with Donna. And giving her a pulmonary embolism is especially cruel -- that's how Josh's dad died in the flashback in the beginning of S2. - Josh being paranoid about the meeting like he's Michael Corleone meeting with Sollozzo and McCluskey is HILARIOUS.

This was filmed at Camden Yards, 4/23/04 - about a month before it aired. There was a weather delay, and then it took Sheen 4 tries to record a strike to then-catcher Javy Lopez (and of course, that part was cut). Martin Sheen became the 2nd member of his family to throw a pitch at Camden Yards - son Charlie filmed Major League 2 at Camden Yards about 10 years prior.

Been through the series several times and never thought about that before... still discovering things with this show!

Been through the show many times now and I think each time I appreciate season 5 a little more every time. I think it still is the weakest season, but it's nowhere near as bad as I thought the first time through... lots of great moments and episodes in there...

Yeah, unfortunately the political upside of a successful raid is probably no better than a "successful" missile strike that kills 50 civilians, but the downside of the raid being botched resulting in US casualties or captures is worse than even a missile strike that kills Palestinian civilians without hitting the target. That political calculus might be a bit different today now that there's a politically relevant faction that has Palestinian civilian casualties as a primary issue, but that didn't really exist back then.

OMG you also saw Boeing Boeing! Apologies if I already mentioned this on a comment to another episode, but that was the nicest stage door. A bunch of West Wing fans were there and it turned out Mary McCormack was waiting for her husband and Brad Whitford was waiting with her, and they were happy to just stand there with the four or five of us and chat West Wing. I told them I worked in DC and when they asked what my job was, Brad Whitford said “I always wanted us to write an episode about them!” (it would have been very boring, it is right that they didn’t 🤣) But just super nice people.

It's kind of a Dexter situation where it's so good, then it's not, then it's so good again for a while, then it's not.

James Amos was PISSED they killed Fitz lol. He talked about it interviews even years later.

Youtalkingtome

Oh my God! That's great! It never occurred to me to hang out at the stage door. I totally would have done that!!

Youtalkingtome

I get it. Such an iconic role. It would be hard to say goodbye to Fitz like that, even if he was never really going to appear on the show again.

Allison Otto

I used to do it all the time when my friends and I saw a lot of shows back in my 20s. Christine Baranski was the nicest too. Another highlight was meeting Allison Janney at the stage door of 9 to 5!

Cactus

FYI, it looks like a couple of hbo's thumbnails for episodes in season 6 might give a light spoiler of new cast members. It's not a big deal, but it's probably fun to see them show up as a surprise if it can be avoided easily.

Cactus

(Navid Negahban) He's a real "that guy," I feel like I expect to see in every Persian role and, of course, many others. I love him in Legion personally.
