These next 2 episodes are so good. The wire always has a very slow start to its seasons, but finishes them stronger than any show I’ve seen.

Cole

There’s this other reaction channel that doesn’t look at YouTube comments and only the Patreon ones for this exact reason. YouTube comments tend to spoil a lot more and care less than the people spending money to see the reactions. But that third party looking over them first if smart and will probably make it so you guys don’t see them even if they’re there.

Maury, the lawyer, may be sleazy but he is doing his job for his clients... Also, about Herc & Carver taking the cash: this time nobody knows how much money was in the house, so it won't be missed. Not sayin' it's *right*, but... just sayin'.

Roland Cooke

The very best depiction of: "Get me everyone." "Everyone?" "EVERYONE!!!!"

The cop who beat up bubbles should be in jail. It’s crazy how they can get away with stuff like that and just say “shit got out of hand.” If someone on the street did that and said “shit got out of hand,” they would catch a charge. Not just whistle off into the distance. I can only imagine if jimmy didn’t know bubbles and he only knew Kima and didn’t have someone to vouch for him there. And also if that didn’t happen jimmy wouldn’t have even had to go see them and wouldn’t have given bubs the money.

Jimmys speech to Ronda is one of my favourite in the show and perfectly says why things are the way they are. Everyone is too selfish and corrupted by money or higher positions that they refuse to do their jobs or anything that will ruffle some feathers aka actually do something. You see it later with the judge who gets back on the ticket and all of a sudden his relationship with jimmy changes. A big percentage of these people are should be in jail. No show makes me more mad.

I love the crime scene sequence so much. It's so great to see everyone working together. For some reason, I find it especially satisfying to see Jay Landsman in the field for once, after spending the whole season cracking wise and trolling everyone in the Homicide office. And this is such a great episode for Rawls. This show is so good at taking characters who are so far to one end of the hate-them-love-them spectrum and giving us just a *pinch* of the other side.

I love The West Wing too, great television, but how much better does The Wire handle this superficially similar cliffhanger... TV doesn't get better than this.

also, last time, herc & carv let their better angels prevail and their actually true wheel well story wasn't believed. i think it's also an instance of rising to the level of lowered expectations. can't get caught on the wire this time and people will probably think you did something shady anyway . . . so, might as well.

Great episode! You can see now they are really stepping on the gas this season. Herc and Carver taking the money was realistic. Stuff ending up in cops pockets is not uncommon during these large chaotic raids. Where many cops have gotten in trouble is where they cross the line into taking stuff from innocent people or making it a regular habit. The scene at the hospital with the real commissioner (Det. Norris) And the fake one on the show took a lot of takes because one or the other kept cracking up. There was a real situation years ago when they first started promoting non-white officers where a commissioner did assume that a white guy was the commanding officer and made a fool of himself.

Bey and his fish is a great moment in the series. It shows that these are not one dimensional characters. Under different circumstances Wey Bey might have been an ichthyologist. This will be a trend throughout the series with other characters.

MrRuss50

Sometimes the police dept. will have you shaking your head on this show but, like others have said,, this episode shows Landsman and Rawls at their best I think. If anyone ever finds the need for an underdog motivational speech you should check out John Doman's(Rawls) 4 min fantastic one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EglLi6nZnZU

Youtalkingtome

Very true. It's disgusting to think that people like that can carry a badge. This is a work of fiction obviously but the fact that this aspect is very true to life really brings me down.

Youtalkingtome

Jay and Rawls were freaking unbelievable in this episode. I literally could have watched an entire episode dedicated to that opening.

Youtalkingtome

They did a great job of humanizing him in this episode. It's all circumstantial. I still don't like Bey but I can actually see him as a person going forward.

Roland Cooke

Oh mine too of course. I meant that in this episode you get to see what "everyone" actually means in real life (sorta). In fact there's so much help that the integrity of the crime scene is endangered.

Spoiler for, um, the overall reputation of the show's structure (so strictly speaking it's a spoiler for the whole show, but I think you've watched the first two or three seasons it won't ruin anything - I'm pretty sure contemporary commenters had noticed this structural aspect by then): Vg'f fb phgr gung gurl rkcrpg ovt guvatf gb unccra va gur *svanyr*. Spoiler for next ep only: Nyfb, fbzrbar arrqf gb qb n fhcrephg bs rirelguvat gurl'ir orra fnlvat nobhg Jnyynpr naq vzcbegnag qrnguf gb fubj arkg jrrx orpnhfr guvf unf orra haornenoyr

I feel the moment *was* set up in the other episode, although I'm not sure I can articulate how. Like one aspect is likely that in the previous episode a big issue was how the wire would get them caught, and here I'm guessing this was less of a concern. But more to the point I think you can tell they're just Done in a way they weren't before. Maybe Keema getting shot, or this whole raid being the police commissioner ruining their case, but this looks like a change from their attitude before, not an inconsistency. I also like how another aspect of that previous episode IS consistent: they steal it together. Like Herc said, "I wouldn't steal it and not tell you about it!".

Rozenn Keribin

I feel Herc is also part of that? Like, he doesn't do anything incredible beyond understanding that when someone drops a packet from a high window to a drug dealer that this is a re-up, but the episode as a whole frames him as *competent* throughout in a way the show usually doesn't. Like, earlier episodes would have had people explaining the re-up thing to him and not the other way around It's like this is "the worst cops you know are actually good at their jobs sometimes" episode. In the beginning at least. (it does show some cops as bad because this is still The Wire, but they're not "the worst cops *we know*" if you see what I mean. They're not the regulars). You think this could be a metaphor for some people's experience of 9/11? Like for a hot second it felt like the country was coming together in a positive way in response to tragedy and next thing you know they're starting wars left and right.

Rozenn Keribin

@KevinL "I'm doing my job for my clients" is a worse excuse than "I was just following orders" though because, like, orders are at least a form of coercion. And in fact lawyers are supposed to be held to legal & ethical standards that I'm pretty sure Jimmy is correct that Maury is breaking in a way that would get him in jail if those laws were actually enforced, so "he's just doing his job" doesn't work morally *or* legally.

Kevin L

@Rozenn Yes of course what Jimmy said about the attorney's corruption is despicable and he should be brought on charges before the bar. What I meant was, the finagling within the law, to get his gangster clients the minimum penalties in that meeting with the prosecutors, that stuff is what he's supposed to do (sleazy or not).

Carla Davis

Guys, good reaction again. As for kima's girlfriend, they said roommate which was common back then for job purposes but I'm pretty sure her family knows. Her girlfriend wasn't at the hospital because it's been days, she at some point would have go home, shower, eat, rest and the best time to do it is when her family is with her. Also she is in icu, they have strict visiting hours. Herc and Caver didn't take the money last time because there was evidence on the wire as to how much money was seized but their motivation was also lower. They, well Carver at least, still had some faith/belief in what they were doing. After Kima has been shot their motivation to steal is higher and justifiable to them and there is no evidence as to how much money is in that stash house. Nothing on the wire to prove they exact amount. It's the perfect storm for stealing drug money, but it's more about kima. They see their life as not being valued. They don't get paid a lot, their life is at risk and see the job as not really caring. I am former law enforcement in the late 90s... and yes in MARYLAND. Not bmore though. Every law enforcement officer has a "come to Jesus" meeting with themselves about whether the job is worth it? Are you doing any good? And the realization that they, THE DEPT, don't care about you. Not really anyway. It is a thankless job and you learn quickly that the criminals on the street aren't the only people you have to worry about. You also have to worry about your fellow officers. Especially if you're black and Especially if you're a woman and Especially if you really want to do your job the right way. And we all react to this realization differently. It's the infamous crossroads that all officers encounter. My response was to quit first chance I got. I left with a serious care of PTSD and nothing but regret for ever going into law enforcement. Google the Baltimore Gun Trace Task Force. Nothing but corruption. This happened in the 2010's. Imagine the types of stuff that was happening in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Baltimore has always had a ton of issues with crime, poverty and corruption.

Youtalkingtome

I'm sorry that was your experience. It's not an easy job at all. I have family that was in law enforcement so I have a lot of empathy. Your perception of this show is fascinating and I'll look forward to seeing your comments each week. Also I will give that a google.

John Sky

I believe the miniseries We Own This City was about the baltimore gun trace task force corruption, although it's not as enjoyable as The Wire

John Sky

I love the team-up in this episode like the damn avengers, all of baltimore PD were on the shooters who hurt a police. Rawls also had stellar scenes.

Rozenn Keribin

That's fair! Maybe I was biased from having rewatched a bit ahead and I had a scene in mind that was... well I guess we can get to it then ^^ you're right that getting the minimum penalty like he did here was more on the legitimate side on its face. He sure smirked a lot through it though!
