With regards to favorite characters, even Landsman has a certain charm even in his crudeness and yes-maning. And of course Bubbles.

The fact that you got to the finale this week was very coincidental. The Baltimore Police just announced the conclusion of a case very similar to season 1 of the wire. However they have learned over the last 20 years and this case they were patient with followed the drugs and the money, partnered with the feds and connected 3 other organizations to the original target so when they did the dope on the table show they had over 100 people they were taking down.

Oz actually started as part of the world of Homicide & The Wire with some of the writing staff creating Oz from a proof of concept pilot as part of Homicide. Due to Homicide being on another network they decided to change cities and sever all ties between series. Some of the actors in the Wire like Bodie came from appearances in Oz. I’ve never made it far in that show it makes Ozark look like a light family drama.

Jonathan

I’m really looking forward to the season premiere. I hope you both have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Strong ending to an awesome season of television. Every one of these characters is so well written and acted.

I understand their frustration with the feds focusing on political corruption, but the fact of the matter is that Avon Barksdale and his organisation are only symptoms of a much more pernicious disease. The only way you actually stop the crime that is destroying places like West Baltimore is by improving the material conditions of the people living there, and the only way that happens is after removing the parasites that are draining the lifeblood of the body politic.

I will die on the hill that Bubbles is a better character than Omar. They're both truly remarkable, and I went into my first time with this show knowing how much fans love Omar, but Bubbles stole my heart almost immediately.

I'm excited to re-watch season 2 with you guys. On my first watch-through of the series it was my least favorite but I look forward to going back and seeing if I like it more this time around.

Panos

Great reaction. Now excited for my favorite season(i know i'm in the minority).

John Sky

glad you loved the ending and all these characters, it's going to be so much fun starting every season and seeing you realize what the show is trying to do this is the only show where every time I rewatch it my favorite season changes, for a long time my favorite was season 2

Roland Cooke

Season 2 is divisive for sure, but it's my favourite of all five. Even the final season, which is a bit rocky in places, is still way better than 95% of TV.

The current police commissioner is one of the good guys. For years they recruited hotshot commissioners from smaller cities who were looking to make a name for themselves fixing one of the countries most famous Police Department thanks to the wire. Most of them butted heads with all the other powers that be jockeying for fame and power. They’re trying something new with this commissioner who I think really didn’t want the job, but has spent his life in the Baltimore police Department so he knows what he’s doing.

Season 2 was controversial when it aired, but you really can’t do the other seasons without it. And it’s a hell of a great story even on its own.

Bodie and Poot are about the same age as Wallace maybe a year or 2 older. We got some of Bodie’s past from his grandmother earlier in the season, with his mom being an addict and dying and his grandmother couldn’t do much to keep him off the streets. The juvie that he was locked up in, very briefly, is the same one that growing up in southern Md where you would hear if you got in real trouble that’s where you’d go as kid. I grew up went to school probably like half in a hour away in the next county. My mother lives like 10 minutes away from there now, Herc and Carver weren’t lying that’s a trip down from Baltimore to the middle of the woods. Carver may have been looking out for himself but if he doesn’t who will, Daniels was the pipeline to Burrell earlier and it’s easier to say fuck my career when he’s already a LT , with a law degree to fall back on worse case scenario. Carver a youngish cop trying to make his way through the system and he gets called upstairs to talk to the Deputy Ops, basically his bosses, bosses boss asking him for info on what’s going on in the detail. If he gets himself on Burrell’s shit list he can kiss any kind of potential career away. He seemed like he was trying to move up the ranks the normal way by just taking the Sgt exam and hoping you place high enough on the list, but after you get that call what else can he do. Either hope he does so well it would be suspicious if he was jumped on the list, Herc was jumped by 5 people, or go the path of least resistance.

Ok, but Daniels clearly has dirt from his past that he’s gotten away with, Prez is a racist POS who blinded a kid who gets preferential treatment because who his father in law is, and Mcnulty is a drunken womanizer who’ve we seen cut corners when it came to the case and we know most of his coworkers want nothing do with him because he’ll throw them under the bus in order to get what Jimmy wants. It’s funny how he’s willing to play the game and look the other way on stuff like police brutality(the bubbles situation) but becomes very self righteous only about certain things. I’m with Carver look out for yourself(everyone else is), why blow up your own career on somebody else attempt to back door the supervisors.

I'll say, I think this episode and the previous also make it clear if it wasn't before that Levy isn't "just doing his job". His job as a lawyer would be to ensure his clients get the best outcome the law permits; this guy is actively and knowingly helping his clients' criminal enterprise. He all but helped them draw up a list of witnesses to kill last episode! And here he's helping them hide their money. The annoying smirk he has when getting good plea deals for his clients IS because he's not "just doing his job"!

dys

Levy is way more hateable than say Saul Goodman / Jimmy McGill... but is that because he is actually more evil or unethical? They're both representing criminal enterprises that they are heavily complicit in. Levy told Stringer and Avon who they should murder but Saul was pretty onboard with Walt working with the Nazis to orchestrate the prison murder. We like Saul because he's a fun character, and funny, and especially having seen Better Call Saul we know where he came from. But we have to ask ourselves why do we like him so much more than Levy?

Rozenn Keribin

You're right, Levy isn't portrayed as doing anything worse Saul Goodman ever does but I don't think the answer to your question is that mysterious. First, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are both antihero stories that are structured to make you root for the bad guy - like, you might not think they're good but the show will set up challenges for them we'll enjoy seeing them succeed at, especially given they often involve worse foes. Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill as a character benefits from this. The Wire also makes us root for some bad guys but Levy isn't one of them here, he hasn't been focused on in that way. Second, in Breaking Bad specifically Saul Goodman has a comic relief role. Levy doesn't. Third and most importantly, Better Call Saul in particular gives us a larger view of Jimmy that justifies sympathy for him. The Wire gives us no reason whatsoever to sympathize with Levy (so far). (be rire ohg, lbh xabj, fcbvyref) I'll also note that this speaks to "Levy sucks", but in terms of "Levy's not just doing his job" the comparison doesn't change things because Saul/Jimmy absolutely isn't "just doing his job" either ;)

Robert Bauman

Nice callback to the pilot/role reversal with Stringer telling Jimmy "nicely done" after the verdict. Agree on D'Angelo being a tragic character. Certainly seems to have more emotional depth than many of the other characters in the game and genuinely was looking out for the younger members of the Barksdale crew. All that just to take the brunt of the punishment...ouch

Carla Davis

Hmm.. but for some reason kima and freeman dont have to stoop to this behavior. The job can be done correctly. It's a character flaw to steal, and cheat and snitch etc. Carver stole money and snitched on his team. He isn't helping the community but he helping himself. I do get what you're saying and I'm not even saying that I wouldn't fall prey to that way of thinking as well but I recognize that it's a weakness in me. They job can be done straight and if you can't do it straight is better to quit and do something else. Doing something else is better for everyone involved

Carla Davis

Oz, gets ridiculous over time. I never finished watching that show because of how unrealistic it becomes.

Carla Davis

😆 i was going to say the same thing. I can't believe the drug dealers got caught by a wire tape of all things. They clearly never watched The Wire. 😆 they were listening to them for 6 months and they are tied to a lot of shootings and murders.

Carla Davis

Great reaction gentlemen. Even though season 2 is still my least favorite season I look forward to watching it with you. As a fun fact, Kima was supposed to die. It was originally written that way but the people at hbo loved her character so much they strongly suggested/convinced the writers to keep her. They thought it would be detrimental to the show to lose her. I think they were right. When the show was first being aired I remember a lot of us had a hard time with her possible death. Sometimes the big wigs get it right.

Youtalkingtome

I love it when characters who were originally supposed to die escape their fates! Looking at you Mr. Pinkman 🤣

steve borden

Kima was right there front row for about a half dozen cops beating on a 16 year old and definitely got her licks in as well, her and Freamon could easily clear a bunch of murders that they know Omar has committed, but it’s not a good look for their key “witness” to get booked for all the bodies that he has. They also all know Omar is perjuring himself but look the other way because it helps their case.
