The Port Authority bus terminal is (in)famously one of the sketchiest places in Manhattan so Liz's cousin lighting up at the idea of meeting people there is really funny. The bits with him wanting to go to various terrible clubs reminds me a lot of Bill Hader's Stefon sketches on SNL. Liz is usually a pretty decent person (especially compared to say Jenna or Tracy) but every so often the show has to you remind you how much of a monster she can be, outing her cousin to his family is pretty gross. Much like the Cosby thing, I originally watched this long before any of the stuff about Franco became widely known, so the prescience of this show is crazy. As you noted, given the fact Franco was down to appear as himself this probably wasn't based on any real rumors at the time (unlike the Cosby joke), but it's still wild.

I feel like the reason James Franco agreed to play this version of himself is so people wouldn’t believe the very real truth about him later. I am not sure how true this is but I have heard that it’s a common tactic in Hollywood to make an absurd and self-deprecating cameo that is kinda but not really close to the truth, just so they have plausible deniability later on. If true, it makes sense that so many cameos from the 90s and 00s are uncomfortable on later viewings.

The James Franco bit is actually referring to the rumor (at the time) that he was gay.

One of the things I find extremely funny is that 95% of the time Lemon is absolutely sex negative and that final 5% she is having a threesome with James Franco and a body pillow. And it is extremely consistent over the course of the entire series.

I wouldn't be surprised. An awkward cameo is always weird. I love a lot of movies and shows with him in it. So it's disappointing when the news came out.
