Weird Magic

Very different first four episodes when you know who the leak is - viewing it both ways is outstanding for different reasons. Originally airing on October 16, 2005, 'Mr. Frost' is Episode 4 of Season 7 of The West Wing. It is the 137th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.9, placing it as the #15 ranked episode of this season and #90 out of all the episodes shown so far.

The 'don't need a lawyer if you are innocent' - 'I got a lawyer' is such good writing. Really love how it says something without saying it out loud first. And they managed to hammer in the first part of the quote with repetiion quite a bit. Really quite sorkinesque, I though. Very much his style, building up a seemingly innocent joke, repeating it to make you remember it, then bringing it back in a completely different light for shock factor.

Have been looking forward to this one! What a great cliff hanger going into the next episode. It's already been said that he didn't like this decision for Toby, but at least it is still Richard Schiff and this does at least set up some fantastic scenes... Also, this episode has one of my favorite cameos in the series with Mitch Pileggi as Senator Dresden who questions Margaret in the hearing. Loved him as Assistant Director Skinner in the X-Files!

Like a lot of the people here, I have been waiting for your reaction to this episode, and again your reactions are spot on! I'll never forget seeing this air on NBC for the first time and seeing my father's reaction to the ending which was pretty much like Kevin's reaction lol 😆 I can't wait to keep watching your reactions through this season!!

I have repeatedly read that it would not fit Toby's character to reveal secret information. Many people have been upset about this storyline. However, I believe that it is the absolutely logical result of the various events. From the beginning of the series, it is known that Toby has a strict ethical compass and advocates for the rights of the individual. The conflict first arises in Episode 5 of the first season, where Toby believes himself to be morally superior to Bartlett ("Demons are shouting down your better angels"). Furthermore, we know that Toby tends towards extremism when he is unhappy or feels cornered. We know that he wants to do more, to do better, to do more important things. However, he is hindered because he serves a lame duck presidency. He feels alone and abandoned, which is evident from his fight with Josh. And to make matters worse, his brother, an astronaut, took his own life. In my opinion, Toby's behavior is exactly what we had to expect from a desperate Toby.

I don’t have an issue with Toby being the leak but I don’t think he would have let Greg Brock or anyone else go to jail for him.

I like that he is stepping in for CJ. He really did just let Greg Brock go to jail though. Obviously they did it for dramatic purposes. That angle is a bit of a stretch though

Your reaction was perfect! I was so frustrated with this storyline because of how long it goes on because when we find out it's Toby it's flabbergasting that he let his friends and colleagues get bogged so far down into this investigation; he really only stepped in to help Leo and not ruin the campaign. I always wonder if it had just been CJ in trouble what he would've done. I don't want to spoil anything but don't count out characters you haven't seen in a while just yet!

Richard Schiff famously was absolutely devastated by this decision. He firmly to this day refuses to accept that Toby did it and maintains that he was covering for someone by confessing. After the next episode you guys should listen to his interview on West Wing Weekly in their episode about 705. He's genuinely still incredibly hurt that they did this to the character.

It is a bit of stretch to believe that Toby would leave people out to dry like that. However it is something he believed in and maybe he reached a breaking point? I'm trying to find a way to justify it but ultimately I agree with your take.

Youtalkingtome

I plan on listening to the entire podcast when we are done. Just don't wanna hear a spoiler accidentally

In the flash forward, Bartlett asked Toby how's Columbia, and Toby says "not a bad place to spend some time". To me it always made sense that it was Toby, because of his brother, and they did a really good job to show how it was torturing him over the last few episodes, but it's only obvious when you already know.

Schiff HATED the turn they dropped on his Toby character. Schiff is the complete opposite of Josh Molina, in that he cares about his character and their motivations and why they do what they do. Molina has admitted a number of times that he is just reading the lines given and doing it the way the director wants. He doesnt need (or want) to know what the motivations are (also, personally, Molina is a pissy dude on social media).
