As a girl that’s been to her fair share of college bars I have absolutely turned my ass around seeing the demographic in a bar 😂😂

Man i used to be so obsessed with this movie when I was like, 19? And just getting into the Beatles (i was pretty insufferable about it lmao). I think i actually first saw it on Netflix, back when netflix came in the mail Im not 100% sure, and im probably wrong, but the girl jude was dancing with at the beginning reminded me of Jane from ted lasso! Maybe i just really want it to be her

So so glad you guys loved it. The cinematography has always amazed me. Such a stunning film. I think this film is such a love letter to the Beatles and that era. You can really feel the intention behind every shot and every song. Thanks so much again ❤️

Great artistic movie. I took a deep dive into Beatles music in 95 when the Beatles Anthology documentary series came out. Evan Rachel Wood was great. I got introduced to her in a great show in the late 90s called Once and Again that followed Aaron Sorkins Sports Night on ABC back when Friday had the best lineup on multiple channels of high quality shows no one was watching. Julie Taymor is more known as a Broadway director with some huge hits and huge flops. Sony wanted to capitalize on owning the Beatles catalog so they already had the rights for the 33 Beatles songs in the film. Paul was given a chance to watch the movie before release and had no notes and was singing under his breath by the end.

Update: upon seeing her in a scene with more light, it definitely wasn't jane lol. I hadnt seen this movie in years, and my overall opinion is that the visuals and vocals were great, but the story was kinda flimsy, as though it was constructed just to serve the visuals (which i don't mind at all!). It just felt like being hit over the head with beatles references at times, though one could argue that it is the point of the movie

I can imagine. The mass leering must be kind of like all the dogs in the Omen III staring that dude down right before they rip him apart.

Julie Taymore became famous as the director and costume/puppetry designer for the Broadway production of Lion King. She was the first woman to win a Tony award for direction of a musical. You can see her signature puppets in the movie. And yes, that was Suzy Eddie Izzard singing For the Benefit of Mr. Kite!

Saw this in theaters with my family and my friend's family, who lived in the next town over where the closest big movie theater was; my town was much bigger and very liberal but just had a couple small arthouse theaters, my friend's town was a more conservative rural farm town that just happened to have the mall with the multiplex that served the surrounding college towns, and my friend's mom was very Catholic and very uncomfortable with the lesbian character :)

As far as whether this nailed the counterculture, my mom would have been about the same age as these characters at this time and she loved this movie and thought it nailed the spirit of the time. My parents met in Berkeley in the 70s so they lived through a lot of that counterculture.
