Funny story about Mariska Hargitay’s dad - just read an article in Variety and apparently she has a documentary coming out. Although everyone behaves badly at various times, I really like this Richard-Lorelai episode. I like that he sees her value, even if it leads to him acting out because he’s hurt that she doesn’t want to be his secretary forever.

I find this episode really interesting for Rory, because her guilt imo comes more from an emotional reaction to Jess leaving and people "hating" him than an actual lack of accountability . At the same time, she doesn’t seem to feel much guilt about what she’s putting Dean through, which, to me, it’s pretty clear that she feels emotionally connected to Jess and increasingly distant from Dean.

That's fair. I just really wish Richard could process not getting his way all the time better. I can see a scenario where Richard is ultimately why she ran away at 16 more so than Emily.

Lorelai is completely out of line sometimes, and her arrested development reeeally comes out in those moments -- "He's gone, I win" is a crazy conclusion to draw from the situation as a grown woman. And Rory absolutely is the star child angel baby of the town, which definitely is super cute but not necessarily to her benefit The last 2 episodes of this season are heart-wrenchingly good, and absolutely up to the standards of emotional nuance you’ve come to expect by now — I feel like you guys are in exactly the right headspace within the show to appreciate them (you’re asking all the right questions etc), and I can’t wait to watch them with you :) For those who’ve seen this before: this episode, I thought, I can’t wait for them to meet Liz, but even MORE so TJ lol

It seems that, like Lorelai and everyone else in town, Dean sees Jess as the only source of all the issues in his and Rory's relationship. Now that he's gone, he doesn't have to think about any underlying problems that might've caused Rory and Jess to get closer in the first place. He doesn't want a fight and breakup, just like Rory, so on they go pretending everything's fine now. And once again Lorelai is aiding and abetting with her "you're lucky, just focus on that" speech. She's had time to think about this and she's choosing to double, even triple down. She's deciding to just hate Jess. I'm so glad we got that Luke moment at the end, finally someone sane. Also, on Jess leaving town, maybe I misunderstood the ending of last episode, but I thought a big part of it was also just Jess wanting to leave (which I understand), as much as it was maybe others pushing for it.

Such an interesting take! I agree it seems that Rory might be more angry about people blaming Jess than not blaming her, even though I still think she's starting to feel bad about her part in this.

The writer did a very good job, considering this was one of the handful of episodes each season they farm out to the writing pool. This writer would go on to write the wonder woman movie.

I love Luke so much. That was such a sweet Rory-Luke moment.

Lorelai can be "a lot" at times, for sure. :)

He definitely wanted to take off and you can't blame the kid. He is living in a town where maybe two people actually care about him. All while trying to process his own life

I’m really excited about the run of episodes that start next week. The last two of this season through a lot of season three are a total whirlwind and some of the best consecutive in the series in my opinion.

One of the Netflix Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes is Mickey Hargitay and Jane Mansfield's "The Loves of Hercules." It's a blast!
