Buffy2 10

An interesting character beat for Buffy in these two episodes. As you two mentioned, Buffy spent a lot of time bemoaning her duty as slayer. However, whenever the possibility of her being replaced came up, her first instinct was to act combative and territorial about her destiny. Great season 2 episode. The ones with Spike and Dru are always gold. i believe your assumption is correct that Seth Green was filming another role at the same time, hence the hair color change.

One of the great details of this two part episode is that the police officer appears in the background of several shots towards the end of the first episode before the reveal that they are one of the assassins in the second part.

It was really nice to see Buffy given a legitimate opportunity to walk away (and not leave the world of the show in peril, with a replacement available), and she chose on her own to remain the slayer.

Much better acting from Seth Green here than his fellow Seth (MacFarlane) from Family Guy etc displayed in this week's Gilmore Girls.

This doesn’t make any of the professional lists but this is one of my favorite episodes of the series. From the great characters and the funny dialogue it has what made season two great. Kelly Connell who played the bug man was a regular on the TV series picket fences at the time he had mentioned that he loved the show and would love to make a cameo. His character on picket fences is a quirky coroner with a lot of bizarre interests so they figured he wouldn’t balk at dealing with the bugs.

I recognize the actress who played Kendra from her time on saved by the bell so the accent was very bizarre to me because I knew it was fake.

Another appearance by Danny Strong, screenplay writer of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay parts 1 and 2. 😂

I think there's tons of the order of taraka, and maybe they only send 3 at a time? Then more if those ones fail, which is why everyone was freaked last episode - a Neverending queue of deadly assassins. Also, i heard somewhere that while bianca lawson did work with a dialect coach, they gave them very little preparation time, which is why the accent is so bad. The blame lies with production, not talent

Bianca Lawson (Kendra) was originally offered the role of Cordelia but had to refuse because of contractual obligations. Joss wanted an actress of color for the role but the WB overrode him and he cast Charisma. Charisma had auditioned for the role of Buffy and SMG had auditioned for the role of Cordelia so it's interesting how it all ended up.

I know it's a corny ass exchange, but I love love love Kendra and Buffy bonding over being freaks at the end! The two characters play off each other very nicely - Buffy learns to take the Slayer role more seriously, and Kendra learns how to lighten up a bit. Also, I cannot tell you how many times I've spilled something on myself and then used the quote "That's my favourite shirt! That's my ONLY shirt!". Without the accent, obviously 😅

As cringey as it was, I think SMG's Jamaican accent was better than Kendra's.

It was really cool to have a moment when Buffy gets to interact with someone her age who absolutely gets what she is going through.

I usually cringe when I hit the Xander/Cordelia thing, because it's so old-school tropey (hate to love!). And in much of its existence the message in that trope has...not been great. Arguing means love, abuse is passion... that one has a sordid history in (especially romantic) fiction to the point it has bled into real culture, and not in a good way. This was the first time that I realized Buffy's score seems to lampshade that, yes, we know it's an overused trope. It makes it a bit better. I'm still in two minds about it, though.

I agree that "aggression = desire" is pretty gross, but you're 100% right: the cheesy music cue really did lampshade the absurdity of it and made it more of a comedic "look at these two fools" moment than one with darker implications.

Joe I think you hit the nail on the head about the world-building. I think a lot of the tendency to tell people starting the show to at LEAST stick through season 2, or "oh just wait because season 2's so good" can be attributed to this. I just looked up the air-date and I had just turned 10 a few weeks before these came on. Should I have technically started this show at 9 years old? Maybe not, but my sister and I used to always watch the movie so my mom was like "eh, same thing I'm sure it's fine." (very much not the same thing) The cliffhanger of part one was the first time I ever remember experiencing that feeling. And I love the additional world building we get here! I'd always thought that the Watchers Council were just bosses of Giles over in England and Giles was the only actual Watcher since there's only one active Slayer. And the fact that Kendra was taken to her Watcher at such a young age, knowing that some day *she* might be the Slayer? Like, how do they know?? AND there's a handbook??? Also, this is a really important episode for me. When I adopted my first dog who was fully my responsibility and not a family dog, I knew I'd be naming him something Buffy-related. His foster name was Raider, and I thought between Xander and Oz, Xander was the most similar sounding name and would be easier for him to switch to as a puppy. Turns out he was way more of an Oz (thank god), and his nickname was *Monkey Pants*. In April,I lost him to cancer at 12. I hadn't watched this episode since then so, yeah, that animal cracker scene just made me fully breakdown. Good stuff guys. Can't wait for next week!
