Um…I like the joke. I’m sick of people pretending that periods don’t exist, and every woman I know would like a little grace given for the extra trials that it brings. I thought from Willow it was cute and sweet and funny, and given that it’s not at all graphic, I don’t understand why it’s considered in poor taste. Someone help me out here with what I’m missing.

For Angel vs. Angelus, I'll point out that the show says when you become a vampire you actually die, your soul leaves and a demon takes over your body. So does Angel, the person with the human soul he had in life restored, need a redemption arc for the things Angelus is doing now? Earlier this season, Angel clearly remembered and had a ton of guilt for the things he did to Drusilla when he was Angelus, but was he actually guilty of them? Not telling you to interpret it one way or another, but food for thought.

There's a fair few excellent werewolf movies (and a truckload of terrible ones). Still head and shoulders above the rest is An American Werewolf In London, you guys seen it?

I've noticed you often react to homophobia references like it's not a thing anymore. "You'd get run out of town for being gay? What is this, the 1800s?" Even if the statement itself is hyperbolic, it's based on reality. This episode aired in early 1998, and the AIDS crisis was in the 1980s, when gay men were seen as universal carriers of incurable disease (people literally called it "gay cancer") that many religious groups proclaimed was a punishment from God, to the point where gay and bisexual men have only been allowed to donate blood since 2023. If a man had ever had sex with a man ... ever ... even once ... tested STI status notwithstanding ... they could not donate blood. Being disowned for being gay is not a thing of the distant past at all. The fact that it can feel like it at times is a blessing, but we're barely 40 years from some of the worst times for the gay community.

Would love An American Werewolf in London reaction if they haven't. Great film.

You're absolutely right. Xander's gay panic was definitely more widespread in the 90's than it is now, but it's not going anywhere.

I recently learned that the actor who plays Larry was ALSO the bully Ice in the movie Hocus Pocus! Truly a hilarious guy

I feel like they should have done the Oz reveal after the locker room scene. I think it would have been a better twist if we didn't already know (the bully, I can't remember his name) wasn't the werewolf.

Jamie Morgan

I think it still works. There are potentially two werewolves - the one they're hunting and the one that turned him. It's only once we know it was Oz's baby cousin that a second werewolf is completely ruled out. But I don't disagree with you, I do think your idea is the better narrative structure!

Jamie Morgan

Yeah, I don't think any of us can take the werewolf hunter seriously. On top of being OTT evil, he's also weirdly sexist? I would have preferred a more nuanced take on that character - maybe someone who genuinely believes he's helping the werewolves by putting them down and ending their 'suffering'? I don't know. Also, I don't know if this is canon or not, but do you think Angelus knew that that werewolf was Oz, and that's why he let him go? Like, he knew having a werewolf in the group would further Buffy's stress and misery, and also keep her a bit distracted so he could sucker punch her with Vamp-Theresa? I might be reading too much into it, but it's very in character for him to be THAT much of a dick!

Erica

Joss whedon trying to portray sexism is about as subtle as a brick to the face 😂 i know it was the 90s, but people knew about microaggressions back then, even if they didn't have the language for it yet

- Giles’ “dad” feelings have visibly ramped up since he learned about what happened with Angel, and his speech about having nothing but “support and respect” for her. I don’t know if Giles has shown up on any lists of “best TV characters” — but he definitely deserves to. Anthony Head, like SMG, is an underrated actor who I’d love to see in more things. Anthony Head does have some interesting stuff in his career, like playing Frank N Furter in Rocky Horror in the West End. - As a gay, I dislike how this episode/show deals with the reveal of Brad’s gayness and the aftermath. This episode wasn’t credited as written by Joss Whedon, but — similar to Aaron Sorkin with TWW — he either directly approved or punched up everything in the show. As others have said, Xander (through being a bit of a self-insert voice) tends to end up expressing Joss Whedon’s uncool thoughts. Sometimes it even feels pretty complicated, because it sounds like Xander is simultaneously mocking himself for his own negative behavior, but also expressing why he feels like the consequences are unfair to him and no one appreciates his suffering. Brad being troubled and in the closet, whatever he’s dealing with — is no excuse for the actual, serious sexual (and regular) harassment he’s been doing. And now it feels like we’re just supposed to accept that he’s not a jerk anymore and move on. - As a big animal lover, the bit where Oz consoles Willow about rabbits is one of my favorite scenes in the show. W: You mean like, bunnies and stuff?? No, don’t tell me. OZ: Oh, it’s OK. They maybe not look it, but bunnies can really take care of themselves. **FYI — Yes, they can!
