This is one of my favorite episodes of the series and since it obviously lends itself to holiday watching, I rewatch it almost every year at Thanksgiving. It’s the stuff at the Kims’ and Luke’s and Sookie’s that I love though, after having seen the series a million times I don’t even remember the Dean drama being in this one until it happens. Sookie drunk on her lawn is like top ten series moments for me 🤣. I think it’s funny that in season one, when he was the public school kid from Chicago pitted against Rory’s private school antagonists, Dean was played up as the rough blue-collar guy who would kill Tristan if they fought, and now they’ve turned around and made Jess supposedly the bad boy.

If I were Rory, I'd be mortified at my mother's behavior at dinner. Loralei needs to learn the phrase "time and place." She was completely out of pocket and needs to stop possibly hamstringing Rory's future by projecting her own insecurities onto her.

No Dean defense from me.....he was acting pretty ugly here, at the end. I'm always surprised there are so many Dean defenders, lol. Re: the Yale thing, I think Rory should've just told her mom she was applying to several schools vs. having Lorelai find out at the worst possible place. She might've still felt like it was Richard's influence and been unhappy about it, but I don't think the public meltdown would've happened.

Grey Gardens is an absolutely magnificent documentary, and yes it does feel like a John Waters fever dream, in the best way. It is a bit obscure but has a dedicated cult following. So idk how many views a reaction would get, but you should absolutely add it to your list of movies that you must see. Many other writers cite Grey Gardens as an inspiration including the Coen Brothers, John Waters, as well as both David Lynch and David Cronenberg. It follows the lives of Big Edie and Little Edie, who were distant cousins of Jackie O, and thus the Kennedys. They were shutins and mother and daughter and they have such a fascinating story.

Absolutely inappropriate for the time and place. It reminds me of when Richard had his VERY loud meltdown at Rory's coming out party. Think about the people around you before deciding to make a scene.

I genuinely think that if they'd just toured Yale and Richard hadn't pulled the trick he did, that if Rory had then applied Lorelei might have been a little hesitant but wouldn't have blown up like that. Just like it took her a bit to come around on the idea of touring Yale in the first place but she didn't throw a fit about it. Her reaction here, while definitely not the time or place, was 90% about still being hurt by what Richard pulled.

Dean's got some icky tendencies and red flags and sadly they don't stop after breaking up with Rory. Lorelai's irrational knee jerk reaction to run or push away from anything having to do with her parents keeps impeding her from seeing and understanding Rory's full personality and how, in many ways, it lends itself to fitting in better and, in fact, sometimes thriving in her parent's world in a way that Lorelai's never would. And sometimes I think she doesn't know what to do with that and lashes out because she hasn't matured enough to deal with her parents in a way that is healthy and healed and thus can't articulate or find acceptable ways to cope with how her daughter's relationship to that world is very different from her own and from her own expectations for how Rory would or wouldn't fit. It goes back to the idea that when the car crash happened, Lorelai immediately places all the blame on Jess without considering that Rory has any agency. The same thing happened at dinner. She placed all the blame on her parents like they manipulated Rory. She never gives Rory real agency and acts as if Rory is a mindless copy of herself that doesn't make mistakes or make decisions for herself. It's infuriating how she can't see either Rory's own independence or her flaws and infantilizes or dismisses Rory's own accountability in her actions.

That was actually one of my favorite Dean moments, but to each their own. Seeing him finally get to treat Jess just a smidgen of the way Jess treats everyone else is gold. The crap Dean put up with for months and being free to speak his mind has to be a great feeling. He suppressed his feelings for so long (and even did it before Jess, with Tristan). He kept trying to be the bigger person until he didn't have to be anymore. I can't stand the coddling that Jess gets and all the excuses that are made for him. He deserves this and more. And no, I'm not a Rory/Dean shipper (actually anti-Rory and anyone but that is a topic for down the road). 🙃

Seeing Adam Brody in this reminded me of the recent comedy series "Nobody Wants This" in which he stars with Kristen Bell from "The Good Place". It's really enjoyable and I think you'd both like it, so you might want to add it to your comedy list.

I agree that Dean was not the greatest but I always thought that Dean was gonna let it go but just as he got off work, he comes across Jess and Rory kissing, which then sets him off. I wouldn’t say he’s looking to start trouble indefinitely, just that in this moment he did. Not ok but I am pointing out some factors. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dean from Chicago...."this is MY town!" ....lol

It's not a factor though imo because it's not about them kissing really, it's about him being reminded that Rory is her own person and not his property. Him saying "this is MY town" - keeping in mind he was the new guy like 2-3 years before and Jess is there cause he has nowhere else to go - is so nasty and possessive when added to all the other past instances when he lashed out cause things didn't go his way. Like, on its own it wouldn't be bad, but added together with dozens of other moments it is quite bad.
