Dangerous liaisons, and a room with a view are a couple of my favorite films period pieces or not.

Not sure how far out you're already booked, but I maintain that Arsenic and Old Lace would be an excellent Halloween season film. Other general suggestions would be The Joy Luck Club, Gilda, The Mission (the 1986 one with Jeremy Irons and Robert de Niro), and Grosse Point Blank. I'd also particularly like to see Kevin's reaction to 2007's Enchanted, now that he's seen the classic Disney Princess movies (although that's not to say Joe couldn't enjoy it, too).

The Mission (1986) was a fantastic film...my wife and I have seen it 6 ot 7 times...it was nominated for 7 Academy Awards, won the Palme D'Or and made the Vatican's list of best religious films ever made (high praise since that's a 1995 list made by ultra-conservative Pope St. John Paul II while the film is about 1750s social-Justice Jesuits opposing colonialism)

Definitely take a look at Chocolat (1988) from the great filmmaker Claire Denis that focuses on the effects of colonization in French Cameroon. Roma (2018) also worth a watch. I'll also recommend Carlos (2010) which is a wild pick for a period piece but the time it takes place in is vitally important to that biopic about Carlos the Jackal.

Evan Fowler

Hoffa and Cobb are a couple of really solid little period biopics worth tracking down.

Can I suggest Valmont for a future list. It's a version of Dangerous Liaisons and far better than it's much more well known counterpart in my view at least.

Joe and Kevin- another period piece to consider, if you haven't seen it yet, is "A Man for All Seasons" (1966) set during the reign of Henry VIII. it was nominated for 8 Academy Awards and won 6 including Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, and Actor

I’ve seen so many amazing period pieces that Im both paralyzed by choice and blanking on anything I’ve ever seen ever. There are some great little, unexpected movies everywhere, but it makes sense to focus on award winners and those with broader draw first. I have to say that I enjoyed the acting in Les Liaison Dangereuses much more than the acting in Dangerous Liaisons. The American version is filled with stellar actors, but they all give performances that are a bit over-the-top (which I’ll assume was the director’s choice). It’s like they all know they’re in A Very Important Movie and want to give the Academy something to chew on whether the scene requires it or not. After having gotten used to naturalistic acting, it was jarring, but it would have fit right in to the 40’s. Agree that Valmont is a good take on the story, and, as much as I adore SMG, Cruel Intentions is a pretty disappointing take on the story.

Oh, I do adore an Oscar Wilde Adaptation. My suggestion is An Ideal Husband. Witty and charming and just a little bit absurd, I love it to bits.

Clare Manion

For another day – Jane Eyre (2011) is a really wonderful period piece. The dialogue – the phenomenal use of the English language to its full poetic potential – is to die for... Come to think of it, some sort of ‘classic lit on screen’ poll could be really interesting ;)

the ugly stepsister (2025)

Still holding out hope for a Pride and Prejudice (2005) watch along to celebrate Jane Austen's 250th birthday this year! 🤞

If you haven't already reacted to Barry Lyndon, I highly recommend it. *The* Stanley Kubrick period masterpiece.

I would go with the BBC production instead. The movie has highs, but it still isn't as good. But, as we're talking Austen, my favorite adaptation is the 1994(?) Persuasion. So good and so satisfying--it keeps all of the book's feeling with a couple of small modifications for the modern audience, and all in two hours.
