The first season of The Newsroom just hits all the right spots even all these years.

Okay, I remember liking this show, but DAMN what a pilot episode. GOOSEBUMPS. And so many belly laughs. It's crazy how fast the dialogue is, almost ER pacing, and yet it's so DENSE at the same time. Every line is dripping with information about the characters, their history, their situation. If you guys have ever seen Sports Night, all the control room stuff will be familiar to you. It's just a bit of fun nostalgia for prior fans. Emily Mortimer is unbelievably good in this role. She has to be vulnerable one moment and completely in charge the next, going from a step behind to three steps ahead without missing a beat. I could watch an hour of just Sam Waterston talking every night and never get bored. Would happily drink his Oban 14 too. :D

Sorkin is the king of pilots. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip has one of the best pilots I've ever seen, way better than this one, and then the show collapses. If you look too much beyond The West Wing, you start to see the seams in his writing. He's smug, he's self-impressed, as are his characters. He is condescending to women and most folks who aren't college-educated, which is not a great look. He is also an inveterate self-plagiarizer. "For reasons passing understanding" is not the first time he'll do that on this show (and it's not even his line, he's cribbing it from The Lion in Winter, which is one of his favorite movies and a major influence on his dialogue style). Despite his laziness and his arrogance, he is undeniably a remarkable talent, and one of the most important pop cultural architects of the 21st century, so I'm glad you guys are covering him. You might even make it past the first season. This is not his best work, it's not even close to The West Wing or even Sports Night (that's one you guys should do), but it's a damn sight better than most of what we're seeing in narrative TV today, even on cable and streaming,

Is it really looking down on the non college-educated? Or is it disgust for how the USA glorifies ignorance and has disdain for knowledge? I agree with your overall premise about this show neing smug- NOBODY in the media, given that EVERY station is owned by corporations has ANY desire to publish the truth and "protect the electorate"- the true-est line in the show was the $210 MIllion in profit quip made by the Jeff Daniels character.....

Such a good show! The writing is sharp and Jeff Daniels and Emily Mortimer are spectacular in this series!

Absolutely ♥ this show! Dunno what you've heard but most peeps I talked to liked all 3 seasons. Think that some may have been put off by the lack of a certain aspects which were used a lot in season one. Can't really say which those are without spoiling things.

What is Oban 14? Is it a scotch? I noticed the bottle and couldn't tell what it is exactly lol. This is one of the best Pilots I've ever seen!

There are whole webpages dedicated to “Sorkinisms.” Phrases and terms Sorkin used over and over.

I have been agnozing into one question for the past week: Of all The Pilots I have ever seen, Which are my favourites. This is what i've come up with: West Wing, The Expanse, Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip, Firely, The Newsroom. Ironically, if i posted this tomorrow, the order would change. The day after that, would probably change again. I believe the anchor of a good show is dramatic comedy. Serious thoughts mixed with a good laugh. Sadness with meaning. Tragedy with substance and inspiration. Loeved this reaction. Keep watching. Were with you.

Is a Sorkinism an overly pretentious phrase that he reuses because he is proud of having written it? I enjoy Sorkin's dialogue and I dislike how language is often dumbed down but some of his phrasing like the “for reasons past understanding” line make his dialogue less realistic. I’ve never heard anyone say that in real life.

Yes! I love that you're starting this series. It's so good. I hope you keep going after season 1 because like the back half of the WW it gets mixed reviews but it's only because the first season is so spectacular that it's hard for it to keep living up to itself but each one offers some stellar casting and interesting storylines.
