I have read everyone's concerns over pricing increasing for purchasing a film watch. While we cannot feasibly add more movie watching to our schedule, we certainly don't want the answer to be to price people out of the option. Thus, we will find some middle ground and drop the new film price to $90 instead of $100. It may not be a perfect solution, but we hope it will help shorten the queue list so people aren't waiting several months for their films to be watched. (a note about ios purchases: they are much more expensive because of extra banking fees, and Apple certainly takes a big cut. These payments all go to middle men. The best way to avoid these ridiculously high charges is to pay through a browser instead of ios if possible).

Sorry that people made you compromise. I thought it was a perfectly fair price hike that was proportional to the demand you were facing. As far as I know it’s just the two of you handling this all, which is intense work for any two people. It’s absurd to expect the two of you to produce so much so quickly, so it’s fair for you to take control that way. Plus you are among the only reactors I know that even allow people to purchase movies for you to watch. Most only have it as either a lottery or as a reward for absolutely highest tier patrons. Honestly we have a pretty good deal here, some of us patrons need to calm down.

Ridiculous. The amount of time and effort you guys put into this is immense and impressive. DON'T COMPROMISE. $100 is absolutely a fair price and FAR under the market average. I hate that people are trying to take advantage of your kindness of having this option. Charge what is fair and worthwhile to YOURSELVES. If people are complaining about such a minimal price increase for this VERY GENEROUS service, then they are not deserving of using it. I for one appreciate ur efforts and think u should charge more than $100, anyone complaining about that price are 💩 heels.

I'm fine with whatever the price is; if I can't afford it, I'll leave the selections up to others who can. I've been pleasantly surprised by how many people pick titles that I had planned on selecting, so it all works out in the end. I've paid for a lot of titles in the past because I love the channel and want to support the continued success of Joe and Kevin. (No, I'm not rich; I just don't spend much money on any other kind of entertainment, so I can rationalize spending it here.) Now that Joe and Kevin have so much more support, I can back off a bit and enjoy the movie choices of other members. To be honest, I don't really understand the dilemma here. Are people upset because they're paying for a reaction but not seeing it right away? Does it really matter if the reaction is posted this month, or in three months, or six months, or one year? Should I be afraid that something catastrophic might happen to me before my pick gets posted? Will I be lying on my deathbed, croaking out my last words: "I've had a good life, but my joy has been overshadowed by the fact that Joe and Kevin never reacted to 'Tootsie'"? There's something to be said for delaying gratification; I love having such a great list of films to look forward to over the next few months. And I just appreciate that Joe and Kevin are putting in the time and effort to make this such a fun and engaging channel.

Well, no, but Here's the inevitable reasoning I have to make being poor: For some channels, I do a "once swipe", where I subscribe for a month, watch everything I'm interested in from the back catalog, and then unsubscribe until next year. I keep one of my Patreon subscriptions allotments like that, because it means I can support many small creators through the year, instead of banking just three all year long and have nothing for the rest. If I pay for a movie here, I have to be subscribed that month, so if it's slotted three months away, might not have enough money to sustain that wait, or yeah, something might happen, and I obviously won't be sad on my deathbed, but I also don't have hundreds of dollars to not care what happens! ...Which is why I understand and sympathize with the problem they have at hand! It genuinely is a difficult conundrum, and I appreciate that they're trying to find a solution. And I can see how the list has blown up so much that, as much as it is super exciting, it can be very overwhelming in practical terms. But I honestly don't think the solution is "elitizing" the system. In the end, it's fine, they'll be fine and I will too. But if they're opening this conversation, I have an opinion about it! They don't have to heed it, obviously, but I'm going to say what I think!

I feel like the easiest solution would be to just put a pause on the requests until it’s a little more manageable. Being booked 4 months in advance and still taking more movies seems impossible and overwhelming.

I think you should honestly charge more for the amount of time for editing and watching so as to be both on par with what is typical in the reactor space for those who even offer the option to purchase reactions - lots of reactors only do polls - and to correctly value your time and effort. I understand concerns about being priced out but honestly no one is entitled to reaction requests and like all unnecessary luxuries not everyone can afford them at all times. I don’t think the compromise should be on your part. I think we need to normalize paying creators for their work and also normalize we aren’t entitled to things simply because we want them to be more accessible to us. There’s value in creative work and I honestly wanted to suggest raising your prices multiple times myself.

Heather

No worries. You guys put out a ton of content, even at the basic Patreon level. I can understand needing to stem the tide a bit in order to catch up.

Hi all, just reading through the comments here - did not read the ones on the initial post about the price change - and I like that people seem to be making very reasonable points about the increase. I personally would love to pay Joe and Kevin more for their time, but also find it a little tough to actually do that in this expensive world (sorry, Joe and Kevin). I see no issue with raising the price to $100, but if that fails to resolve the issue, perhaps other options, like the ones suggesting a lottery system, a cap on the number of movie request slots available (or requests per individual) in a given time, or some other idea would be worth considering. For example, I know of one channel that does a randomized, sort of "spin the wheel" pick of one member every month or so, and that person is allowed to make whatever request they like, "free" of charge; it's a potential perk for subscribers/members/Patrons who maybe couldn't afford a request on top of the Patreon fee and could be used in conjunction with an overall cap on available slots. That way, Joe and Kevin might not feel so much pressure to speed through editing (that way leads to burnout), but members less able to swing the fees would still feel they had a chance to participate in the request process. Maybe something like that would be feasible, if the need arises.

I stand by my suggestion in the other thread that they make a pinned spreadsheet with a watched list and future queue showing whats going on with a self-imposed cap. You COULD prioritize those who haven't had a say yet....keep the price at $90 or $75 but put people who have never bought a reaction at the front of the queue and those who have bought more than three at the back... Also see my other post about "team coalitions" where other reactors have people throw in $1 or $5 towards a $75 request fee and prioritize team picks since they have more "popular votes". The uncapped system is like our US Senate where ND, SD, MT, UT and ID get 10 senate seats and have less people across the 5 states then one neighborhood in a city like LA or NYC You need a cap on purchases

Patrick

I appreciate ur opinion. But ur opinion creates even more work for no compensation. Not fair at all for their labor

Luis

Not sure if others have suggested this but I think a good solution would be 2 tiers of movie purchases. $90 for the full unedited movie reaction only on Patreon. $300 for edited movie reaction that also gets added to YT. That way that should theoretically slow down the requests that come in that take the most time to complete.

Actuarial Lurker

That sounds like a great idea...question, if they are using YT edits as "bait" to create new paying Patrons (since YT pays diddly) they probably would WANT to put interesting films all edited up on YT anyway....if great content is completely behind the paywall people won't know about it...I guess they COULD make a weekly YT "highlight reel" promo video touting what is behind the paywall with hot takes and that would take a LOT less time then creating a YT edit of the film and accomplish the same end.

Honestly I really think you should charge whatever you feel keeps the list manageable, and not think twice about it. It's more than reasonable.

Koko

I was already shocked about the prize before when I've wanted to buy the reaction to a christmas movie I love a lot. But since you're the only american people I have a patreon forI didn't realize that its seemingly normal or even more expensive. It is definitely too expensive for me. That's one to two weeks food for me :)

Actuarial Lurker

As Luis points out they could just do raw reactions that don't go onto YouTube so that they get the same revenue but Kevin doesn't spend hours editing YT versions that get 10,000 views. They could do the same amount of reactions for less work and the same money or even do 1 more reaction unedited to clear the backlog. I didn't speak to him but I would guess Kevin spends 15 hours a week doing editing....Since they DO need to get a steady flow of new paying Patrons perhaps they have a hot-take highlight reel where they hype the films behind the paywall and see if that draws in the same volume of new Patrons Joe and Kevin are spot on in their comment about the Patreon iOS app... Apple skims THIRTY percent of creator fees and were SUED and lost for monopolistic practices and forced by court order to allow for lower cost alternative payment methods....the bottom line is that if you want the guys to get most of the money, and not Apple, you need to do requests through an online browser and NOT the app

You guys have done a couple of my movies now, and I've got six more on the current list. I really shouldn't have purchased as many as I did, mostly because I had plenty of other things I should have spent that money on, but I get so passionate about my movies, and I really do love seeing your reactions! I picked the movies that I love, but also the ones I think you will love, too! With Blast From the Past (1999) and Mr. Holland's Opus (1995), I knew you would see the heart in both films, but especially Mr. Holland's Opus! You may not have ever seen it otherwise... and certainly, if I can help anyone learn about music, and to love it... then that's what I'm going to do! Looking forward, though, with or without the increase, there's no way to keep up with that many purchased movies. I'm thinking 4-6 ish... per year. I'm just glad I was able to do as many as I have. I'll enjoy every minute of them... especially the Christmas ones! Thank you, Kevin and Joe! You do everything you can to keep us all happy, and I am so grateful for you!!!
