Beer Bad

My personal least favorite episode. All up from here. This one was an attempt to get government funding by creating message driven content. I say attempted because they didn't even get the funding boost due to the obvious lack of conviction in the message. Even this episode has its moments though. I really like Giles performance when he realizes that Buffy might actually destroy him.

Wow. I hadn't even heard about his death until now. How shocking. He was a year younger than me. How incredibly sad.

James MacDonald

Yeah, this is almost universally considered a bottom 3 episode in the entire series.

Thank you for the tribute to Nicholas Brendon. And I Loved the way you reacted to Parker! You are obviously very nice young men. If I was fifty years younger I would want to date you both. lol.

It was the same girl that they showed in the "previously" intro! Her hairstyle was really different, though, so I don't blame you for not realizing it.

This one and another episode later in the season are the lowest ranked on IMDB, and for good reason. I was interested to see how you guys would respond to this one, because while some of the other "bad" episodes are still enjoyable for cool monster effects and campy fun, this one just doesn't have much of that and yes, feels very heavy-handed. (Good caveman makeup aside.) I'm also quite weary of Parker at this point and ready to not see him anymore. It's close to stretching plausibility that Buffy was still holding out for him to completely change and beg for her to take him back. Others may point this out, but this episode was specifically written to take advantage of government funding offered to shows that had an anti-drug message. The funding was denied because of the supernatural element and concerns that people wouldn't associate it with actual beer or drugs. There are still some fun moments in this: - Willow's confrontation with Parker - "Nothing can defeat the penis!" - Everything Sarah Michelle Gellar does physically in this episode. - "My brother's a warlock..." I always love the nod to the existence of magic outside our core characters. Yes, the singer is the same girl as last episode. The stage lighting could be making her hair look different, but that's the same girl.

"Now what did we learn from beer?" "Foamy..."

I think this episode might have unfairly soured me on the beginning of this season overall in retrospect... the first 4 episodes were all good to great, better than the first few episodes of last season. My opinion of THIS one has not improved much this time, however. I looked at the wikipedia article on this episode and was initially shocked to read it had been nominated for an Emmy... until I read that it was for hairstyling.

Rip Nicolas Brendan but to be sad I gotta say for die hard fans following the show and cast since it aired originally, it’s not entirely a surprise. Sometimes it’s sadder when you can tell somebody is gonna die young. As a kid he was my warped idea of what a grown up is like lol Really saddened There’s some amazing performances by him coming up. Something small to be thankful for.

Nick's death is heartbreaking. I know Xander the character has a lot of issues thanks to some bad writing choices, but Nick always nailed the part. Great comedic timing and he had some incredibly emotional moments in the series that will always stick with me. May he be at peace.

Carl Wilson

Absolutely cannot watch this episode until I pour myself a drink.

Carl Wilson

RIP Nicky Brendan, troubled soul, but also thinking of the people he hurt in his troubles.

Joseph Irizarry

Whoa, I've seen this a couple of times and I'm just now thinking that Buffy's Parker daydreams in the beginning were prophetic since that's one of her things.

Carl Wilson

You're right about Buffy being hung up on Parker way too long, given that she's ten thousand times what he is - but you do have to remember that was only the second time she ever had sex in her life (and of course the first time was an even bigger disaster). And I think it's a non-monster way for the writers to look at things that do happen in college, like the mismatch of what "adult" relationships can mean to different people, and the way the sudden expansion of the social world can leave kids vulnerable to users and douchebags.

Kirsten Stewart

Tbh this is the episode I can’t wait for reactors to get past with a run of bangers to look forward to

I know this isn't a fave ep for many (anyone?) but I always enjoy it for the fun of it. Has some hilarious moments and great lines. As for Nick, I don’t really know how to feel about that. Xander is one of my favorite characters in the verse (and in general) but I separated him from Nick a long time ago. Nick was an awful person, abusive (Diddy-level), and preyed on fans especially, so I am not exactly sad he’s no longer around to hurt more women. And I know the relief and peace that comes when your abuser is gone for good so I am thinking of his victims more than anyone else. But I still feel something because he played such a huge role in my childhood and life as BTVS will always be my favorite show. I feel sadness over who I wish he'd been, what he could’ve been had he made different choices in life. 😢

I'm a Beer Bad stan. Love Cro-Magnon Buffy. Love Willow calling Parker on his crap. Love Parker getting brained. And the anti-drinking message was pretty tame (one of the reasons they didn't get that government subsidy).

Giuseppe D

Fyi, this is the lowest rated episode of the whole show!

Kimba

Ugh to having to see Parker’s stupid face again although Willow telling him off was a nice touch. He’s not an interesting character no need for so much screen time.

Jamie Morgan

So, the WB (along with other networks) made a deal with the White House that in return for an advertising subsidy, their shows had to make an anti-drug/anti-alcohol episode. Beer Bad was one of them, but it actually ended up being disqualified from the deal because: "Drugs were an issue, but it wasn’t on-strategy. It was otherworldly nonsense, very abstract and not like real-life kids taking drugs. Viewers wouldn’t make the link to our message." I firmly believe the writers did it on purpose because they didn't like being told what messages to put in their own show lol. It also won an Emmy for best hairstyling! Anyway, as dumb as this episode is, it does have some great moments. Willow playing Parker like a fiddle, Xander holding up the no smoking sign, Buffy spinning around on her office chair, Buffy smacking Parker in the head, Buffy smacking Parker in the head again. Also, the girl Oz walked past and the singer of the band are the same person :) I hope this doesn't count as a spoiler because it wasn't *meant* to trip you up, I think you just got confused lol

Erica

As many have said, this is generally considered to be the worst episode of the show (or second worst, depending on who you ask). I think it's second worst, bc at least it's a fun episode. The worst is yet to come, but imo, it's only one episode that's worse than this lol

Mariska Costeris

I’m really not sad the reboot is not happening. Whedon, semi cancelled as he might be, was the heart of the succes of Buffy. Without him I have no faith in it.

Tina

I don't much care for this ep (because Parker sucks), and skip it on rewatches, but Sarah Michelle Gellar's delivery in this is so stellar that it makes me giggle every time I do rewatch! It helps that of all the Buffering the Vampire Slayer podcast's songs per episode, this one is one of my favourites. XD https://youtu.be/YCWydfOjAwY?is=gBMa33gp98PlxX2E As for Nicolas Brendan's death... Xander is a good example of me for once being able to separate character and actor. Then again, I like Xander in spite of all of his bullshit, I don't love him like I do Danny Concannon in West Wing, who is fairly one-dimensional, after all. While Xander gets to be a real human being. I would have wished change on Nicholas Brandon, rather than death, but it is still sad.

Roland

What gives it away?" "Looking at it" :D

Roland

I'm happy to accept the moral lesson that drinking haunted beer is a bad life choice. :)

Roland

"Men haven't changed since the dawn of time" ***CRASH*** This is a hilarious episode, Buffy works well on all levels, and I'm here for the silliness segment.
