Mad Men, Season 3, Episode 4

Actuarial Lurker

Gene is a bit progressive- he is trying to teach Sally to be independent by letting her drive and he is trying to make Bobby a "man" by showing him the dead soldiers hat and talking about "beating the clap"- so he isn't favoring Bobby over Sally. That said- I agree he is over-stepping by trying to act like their father in front of Don

Swedes and Nords have been enemies in prior wars - hence the "roommate mini-drama"

Peggy saying she's Gene's "little girl" really just reinforces what the therapist said in season 1 about her being like a child. And she is not very maternal for sure. And nobody paid any attention to Sally but Gene, so that makes his death especially hard for her.

One of my favorite elements of this show is watching Sally become a young woman, and watching her perspective and experience become a more and more important part of the narrative. This episode is really the beginning of that. It’s the first episode that you can argue really is about her. Kiernan Shipka is so gifted.

Yeah that part is a no go. Otherwise, I loved Gene as their grandfather. He was probably the warmest character on the show.

Yeah Sally processing Gene's death is going to be really interesting going forward. I hate to say it but Betty is being rather childlike right now.

I didn't really think that we would be watching the show from the kids perspective as well, it makes total sense and i'm excited to see that angle as well!

heheheheheh

A lot happened this episode, so you probably didn't catch the little look of "I told you so" from Peggy to Don after the failed Patio pitch. Put a pin in that. ;)

I think this marked an actor change for Bobby. I wonder why Roger was at the Patio meeting, he's not normally at the pitches from creative I don't think. The Patio sequence is iconic! Lol

Weird Magic

Although Grandpa Gene has passed in Mad Men - won't be the last time you see him. The actor will be showing up as a recurring character in a different show you're watching now, fairly soon. Originally airing on September 6, 2009, 'The Arrangements' is Episode 4 of Season 3 of Mad Men. It is the 30th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.0, placing it as the #10 ranked episode of this season and #19 out of all the episodes shown so far.

John Vaclev

Something that probably doesn't register now, but certainly at the time of airing, is how much the actor who plays Grandpa Gene looks like John McCain. If I remember correctly, the season 2 episode [where they to go visit him following his stroke], was just weeks if not days before the 2008 election.
