The Summer Man

So the writers are making us think Don MIGHT have bottomed out and is now going to swim, restrict his drinking and date an age appropriate woman with a PhD....do you believe them?

Actuarial Lurker

Yes, just when you thought misogyny was bad in the first 3 seasons you get Joey....a family member of mine used to work in forensics and there was a DIRECT correlation across historical time starting in the mid-60s between women's empowerment at work, legally, and society and the number of active serial killers, felonies against one, spousal abuse etc. so the show unfortunately does a great job of capturing not the origins of, but the exponential ramping up of, male "backlash" that we now know suffer from in the form of "male rights", "bro culture", and worse ...Joey probably listens to Tucker Carlson now that he is 80.

As a male- I defer to female Patreons- who was right? Joan who wanted to use "soft power" to convince Sugar Berry Ham over a dinner to get Joey fired and by implication possibly me-too him out of the industry though word of mouth or Peggy who after the last "suitcase episode" where a female Don 2,0 would just "act like a man" and fire Joey as a disobedient and disgusting subordinate? This harkens back to BobbIe Barrett in season 2 who tells Peggy while recovering from the car crash that she shouldn't be man and use her powers as woman to get ahead.... OR can Peggy find a middle path and be herself and Don a meld of female and male work power

The Ali fight was in May, Betty went into labor with baby Gene in late June 1963 of Season 3 and its his 2nd birthday later in the episode- so perhaps 5 weeks have passed

I have to say, I was with you when I first saw the episode, I thought Joey's awfulness was a little out of left field. But on repeat viewings, it tracks perfectly and it's obvious in retrospect what a total dickhead he was the whole time.

John Vaclev

I don't disagree with this at all. However I think there's another element at play in this season, and it's that there's a newer generation of men [represented by Stan and Joey] that's more sexually liberated. Joan's tactics of keeping the office horndogs in line back in Season 1 aren't working.

LOL if I showed up to dinner and my ex was there with a much younger version of myself I may hit the bar too. 😂 The writers definitely had this in mind when casting Bethany.

Actuarial Lurker

Bethany DOES look like the version of Betty with her hair up in Rome when Don and Betty were pretending not to know each other

Yes and no. I can see this being a reset and then him continuing on business as usual. He's lost his footing and I don't expect him to change.

Look I always want to side with Joan and she is right, but this fool needed to leave. It was straight up harassment!

Matthew Weiner probably won't be making anymore shows, for better or worse (google his name + scandal or whatever). He did write a terrible 'quirky' indie film, and then created an anthology show The Romanoffs which didn't last long (it was occasionally good), plus he wrote a bad novel. I genuinely think Mad Men was his peak.

Not feeling the Henry hate nearly as much as others - I'm remarried, and if I had to live in my wife's ex's house with his stuff still there in the garage - I'd be doing things to get that stuff gone too. It's not good for any of the 3 of them to keep that stuff there. Originally airing on September 12, 2010, 'The Summer Man' is Episode 8 of Season 4 of Mad Men. It is the 47th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.6, placing it as the #6 ranked episode of this season and #9 out of all the episodes shown so far.

This was the first episode I ever saw. We had a screening at film school. All the creators that showed up were women and they said they were able to write this show because they worked in the field and they had to deal with this level of absolute awful.

Anna

The Joan storyline was all I remembered about the show

I'll have to read into the scandal. Man it's tough when a creative genius peaks. You really want more and it's frustrating when you can't have it.

You guys sometimes talk through really important moments without paying attention to the subtle ways the story is being moved forward (which I guess is the hazard of doing a reaction video). While you were discussing whether Joan's husband is a decent guy or not, Joan broke down because she feels lonely. Greg has just told her to "talk to your friends at work" and then proceeds to want to have sex with Joan. And Joan says "I can't" because obviously she's distressed, and who wants to have sex when utterly depressed? And then he just ignores her plea and tells her to imagine they're on a little afternoon getaway, and she resigns to it. Callback to when she got raped - now she's just beyond offering any resistance. And again, when he was tired, he would not indulge her. Yet another way to show how manipulative and inconsiderate he is of her feelings.

The hand gesture means that Don is asking if her father has anything to do with the Mafia.

Weird Magic

They have headphones and subtitles on, and also have to edit the video to post to YouTube - my experience has been that these guys catch more than we think they do at first blush :)
