Jesus

“The number of things that had to happen for me to get to know you” go back and watch the small escalation of her screen time throughout season 4. Masterful long game by the writers.

So he marries a younger secretary just like Roger rather than Faye. I think it is because he sees how she just cleans up the spilled drink rather than slapping Sally in the face- she is his au pair wife

Betty firing the maid is like the 50th worst thing a character has done this series., and not remotely comparable to Sal. Yes she’s a bword but y’all get carried away 😂. I’m half kidding don’t kill me. This is definitely her worst moment though , for sure (the no letter of recommendation was brutally petty )….Wait a second…Petty Betty?! Time for another visit to Dr. Edna.

Jesus

Also, Don’s problematic professional dynamic with Meagan and his infidelity to Faye notwitwstanding, I always thought “what is this profesional psychologist doing dating this obviously troubled man in an unrestricted relationship?” It never made sense to me that she allowed her feelings to grow while ignoring his red flags, especially since he was open about his baggage. Her character is entitled to human imperfection of course. And certainly still not a defense of Don.

“Hey commenters, are you decent?”

I also agree. I think Betty is suppose to be an unlikeable character AND that's what makes her interesting! Some of the characters have an obvious upward arc but we have seen Betty fall from grace since S1. It would be easy to give all the characters upward arcs but I like seeing a diversity in every characters arcs. It feels a bit more meaningful and makes all them actually complex rather than they are good or bad, in a simple linear way. Also, unfortunately January Jones who play Betty did receive hate for her character in real life even though its obviously a fictional show. Which is crazy! Also, I love Dr. Fay, she is such a great character. But I'm so interested how you're gonna see Megan, she is such a well written character (IMO).

Roger may have the best one liners of any character in television history. Kudos to John Slattery. Role of a lifetime.

Your handle is Jesus- I think Faye was trying to be Jesus and "fix him" and was surprised that he was willing to trust her enough to reveal his deserter secret. Of course the real Jesus needs you to WANT to change in order to be fixed and Don certainly hasn't bottomed out

Here is where I reveal my cryptic comment to avoid spoilers in the comments to last week. I HATE Don marrying Megan...it made "writing" sense to create an inter-generational drama odd couple, break the wall between work and life since he's marrying a co-worker etc etc. If he had married Faye and she got Don to go to ANOTHER psychologist or psychiatrist rather than try yo "fix" him herself (as my comment to user "Jesus" above), then the show might be over dramatically with Season 4: he'd somehow settle with the government regarding his desertion, marry a co-equal- actually a better- and still see his kids- and we's have a Disney movie ending. Here we get to see him marry an "au pair" wife who is good looking and young who can "raise" his kids and won't demand anything from him....so it makes sense from a writers-room perspective since he can still continue to fall apart and have even less in common with his new wife than any other women he was involved with- just sex. In an odd way Mad Men has just turned into a dark "Sound of Music" with this finale

The actor playing Glen is show runner Matthew Weiner's real life son- of course you MIGHT see him again....

But the refusing to give her a job reference so she is UNEMPLOYABLE is the true bad act- where Henry has to vouch for Carla for her next job- who would hire a nanny and housekeeper where the MOM didn't give a reference?

One thing people miss about Betty's overreactions wherever Glen is concerned is that he used to be her admirer, the one person who made her feel young and desirable when Don was neglecting her, and now he has discarded her in his affections in favour of her own daughter - it has to make her feel old and feed her insecurities. Not defending her of course, that was horrifying and awful what she did to Carla - and to her own kids in the process.

Ngl I always hated Dr. Miller's character, I'm really happy Megan Draper is finally here!!! She's so precious // and I love Betty and Don's scene at the end, definetely one of my favorite moments of them

Robert Bauman

I think the two key Don/Megan moments are 1) her telling him "I know who you are now" i.e. you don't have to worry about your past with me 2) the milkshake scene where it is apparent how good she is with kids and that they clearly like her as well. Don is pretty old-fashioned, so I think his ideal wife is someone who is attractive, good with his kids, and thinks he's the greatest and won't challenge him when he gets out of line. Megan seems to fit all of those and, combined with Don's impulsiveness, he goes all-in. Faye is the more appropriate choice, while Megan is the "easier" choice for Don. Knowing Don (as well as the fact that they really don't know each other well at all), I'd be pretty surprised if everything is sunshine and rainbows for this relationship over the long haul. However, I actually enjoy Megan's character and think she adds an interesting new dimension to the show.

FYI the Season 5 opener "A Little Kiss" is two episodes on AMC+ but originally aired as a single 2-hour episode. I think it's probably best watched in one sitting as a single episode since that's how it aired but it could also probably be watched separately if need be.

Actuarial Lurker

January Jones has been vilified in the industry itself after this show ran- with colleagues and directors saying she is wooden, can't act and only could play Betty because that's her actual personality- hard to be on set with, etc etc....so it wasn't just the fan hate reaction on social media but it actually spilled over into her career since then

Actuarial Lurker

After they finish the series (to avoid spoilers) Joe and Kevin should watch some of the "Best of" youtube compilation videos that run 15-20 minutes long and feature the whole series' best lines from Roger Sterling..he should have been a stand up comedian rather than a head accounts man...

I feel like out of all the seasons this is the one to go back a rewatch, what a freaking rollercoaster it's been.

Youtalkingtome

Dark Sound of Music lol. Yeah I don't think the show has a happy ending if he would have married Faye. I think Don is a bottomless pit. He has no idea what he wants or who he is. Time and time again he repeats these patterns and seemingly no one can fix that.

Youtalkingtome

I'm really curious to see where they take her. She was a background character essentially. I don't see them being together forever at all. I think by the end of season 5 they end up separated.

Denisse Brito

“He may act like he wants a secretary, but most of the time they are looking for something between, mother and waitress, and the rest of the time we’ll…” - Joan on the first episode said this to Peggy on her first day. I found this to be true not only for this show… but okay, Mad Men (lol) doesn’t Meggan/Betty fit this? Faye 100% doesn’t. Even when Faye was leaving with her box and they were making diner plans she wanted “his girl” to do it. Don could never be married to a woman so put together as Faye, she would have wised up. (I dislike Faye very very much, but she’s a very accomplished woman). Also, remember during the Christmas party when she went into his office? She did tell him that he would be married in a year.

Denisse Brito

I dislike Betty because of that scene with Carla… that comment about Carla’s children makes my blood boil. After this episode I started to really like Henry, especially when he stated the facts about how “fresh starts” don’t exists and all that. That last conversation with Betty, she was not talking about her new house, she was talking about her marriage and I found it hilarious. Do you think Don was pretending not to get it or he didn’t?

Chris

Interesting question. I don’t know if Don understood. She obviously knew Don was going to be there even though she pretended otherwise. Is she trying to rekindle something or just looking for attention from Don she’s not getting from Henry.

Chris

I assume Weiner uses I Got You Babe at the end of the episode as a subtle reference to Groundhogs Day. Don making the same mistake over and over instead of staying in a healthy relationship with someone like Faye.

Chris

“Dad will tell you he loves you when you’re born and if he changes his mind he’ll tell you later” is the funniest way to sum up a generation. I was laughing at that line from the intro. Basically sums up my father’s relationship with his father.

Youtalkingtome

The amount of foreshadowing that went straight over our heads. I didn't know how this season was gunna end or even where it was going but dang, what a great reveal. So glad they took their time and told this amazing story.

heheheheheh

You have every right to hate Betty after this episode. Don't apologise. I also hated Betty during this time. The understanding will come in retrospect.

For anybody that wants a sneak peak - here's the Season 5 Trailer https://youtu.be/NWqySyuSOiI?si=u3hnBHCcpJlX-Xbi Originally airing on October 17, 2010, 'Tomorrowland' is Episode 13 of Season 4 of Mad Men. It is the 52nd episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 9.0, placing it as the #2 ranked episode of this season and #5 out of all the episodes shown so far.

As much as I love Mad MEN The most important line for the women of Mad Men is when Faye says “I hope she knows that you like the beginnings of things.” That might as well apply to all of the main female characters of the whole show. I feel like the show loves the beginning of its female characters but then they either turn them into monsters, or they just don’t know what to do with them, and let them sort of fade into the background or worse to fade away.(and Faye is the perfect example of that) . and when you mention honeymoon phase, that is the perfect way to describe it. Every main female character has had one Betty, Peggy Joan even back to Midge and now Megan. Which will comes up of course the next episode. It’s one of the things I dislike the most about the show.

Youtalkingtome

I don't think we're supposed to like it. It's from his perspective and it's hardly a pretty sight. He's a terrible womanizer and kudos to the show for making us hate our protagonist so often. S5 and S6 really show that. Megan is a great character and he doesn't give her the respect that she deserves

Christopher Runyon

I read that a central point of season 4 is the demystification of Don Draper. In the early seasons he was a man of mystery to his coworkers and an enigma of sorts. No one knew anything about him other than he was incredibly good looking, incredibly good at his job, and had an incredible looking wife. Now he’s become just like every other advertising executive: a semi functioning alcoholic, divorced, and now suddenly marrying his secretary. Marrying Megan is such a cliche among these executives and him smiling like a fool when announcing the engagement is reminiscent of Roger being over the moon with Jane (for 20 minutes or so)

Youtalkingtome

So true. I know this season doesn't work for a lot of folks but I loved it. It's hard to watch self destruction but this season forward it's a brand new show. It was incredible
