Here's the full length reaction to The Living Daylights, the first of the Timothy Dalton James Bond movies! There's still one more Timothy Dalton movie, but I wish I had more movies to base his performance on! I like him as Bond, but I feel like I was missing some of the classic JB charm in this one. Enjoy!

Happy Friday, Addie. The James Bond movie mission continues with The Living Daylights (1987), the first Timothy Dalton/James Bond movie.

What a very pleasant surprise! Thought your (well deserved) break from Bond might last to April or May! Oooh I know what I'm going to watch tonight :) Yeah, after Moore's era audiences and producers felt the movies became too mellow or clownesk, especially if you can imagine the amount of action movies that arrived during the 80's (predator, alien, die hard, etc etc). So Dalton's era is more grounded and feels more like a real spy movie. TLD is one of my favorites, great score and the last (yet one of his best) of John Barry. The next one never really vibed with me, even as a kid I didn't like the whole "gangster/druglord/cartel vibe" it had. But it is a unique Bond movie, if you know what that means ;)

Happy Friday, Addie! 😊 I've been looking forward to the continuation of your 'James Bond' journey. And I keep forgetting about the Timothy Dalton films. Definitely looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today & a great weekend! 😊

Dalton wanted to stay true to the way Ian Fleming wrote James Bond in the novels. Sadly audiences weren’t ready for this type of Bond. When you get to Brosnan, you’ll be reunited with a more suave version of the character.

John A

Definitely my favorite Bond. Wish they kept him instead of Brosnan personally. He also makes a GREAT villain, it's just a shame 1923 had to get so bizarre

Jon Anderson

Happy Friday, Addie! This is one of my favourite Bonds, and I've enjoyed Dalton in many other roles. If you'd be interested in checking out more of his work, try Flash Gordon - I promise you will not regret it.

I will have to respectfully and highly disagree with Addie on this one. Tim Dalton is my favorite Bond. He's the closet to Fleming's character and there are on set stories that Timothy read the books during his breaks. I wish we could've had more of him.

Simon

So glad you're back to Bond; one step closer to Goldeneye, the GOAT.

Jonah D Jackson

Absolutely. Neither of his movies is in my top 5, but purely as an actor, his Bond is nearly perfect. I also don't think we get Craig's version without Dalton.

Jason Mangen

So Dalton kind of Lucked into this role. Pierce Brosnan was set to take over but that was put on hold because Brosnan was locked into Remington Steele role and the network refused to release him gir the Bond role. Once Remington Steele was over Brosnan slipped into the role.

James Waters

For me Timothy Dalton is the darker and grittier Bond that Daniel Craig wishes he was

Simon

Also, great timing because it’s Timothy Dalton’s 80th birthday today 🥳

- The actor playing Koslov the "defector" also played the doctor friend in "The Fugitive" - The actress playing Puskin's girlfriend, Virginia Hey, later played the bald, blue alien Zaan in the series "Farscape". - Art Malik, playing the Afghan leader Karim Shah, was the bad guy leader in "True Lies"

John A

I have always love the Timothy Dalton Bond movies. But I would agree, it is not Goldfinger or The Spy Who Loved Me. But it was refreshing to have a more serious Bond

Cuyler Hair

He is definitely more like the James Bond we see in the books. He is also my favorite James Bond as I’m a fan of the books themselves (even if they are problematic). Dalton also read all the books to prepare for the role

John A

Damn is he really that old? Didn't seem it in 1923

Simon

He’s always been a good looking guy for his age.

Personally, Timothy Dalton is my favorite James Bond out of the entire franchise, but you're not wrong about any of your points about this film. The tone shfit is definitely big from Roger Moore's era, and the villains aren't the best at capturing the viewer imagination. Originally there was going to be more Moore-style whackiness (even to the pointing of shooting some of the scenes), but they were taken out to shift more towards (close to) realism. What I love about this one is that it's possibly the first Bond movie to feel like it's in the "real world". There's no SPECTRE or plot to Destroy The World going on, just government officials embezzling funds, smuggling drugs, and buying weapons from an arms merchant to use during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (Which was really going on when this came out). Naturally, there has been a re-evaluation of the portrayal of the Afghan mujahideen given the Afghan civil war after the withdrawl of Soviet troops, and the rise of the Taliban.
