This is always a tough episode to watch, even when you know what’s coming. The thing that always gets me most is Dreena’s radio transmission at the end and Cassian tearing up listening to it. “Help us! Is there no one who can help us?!” That moment when Syril realizes that Cassian, who he’s been obsessed with for 3 years, has no idea who he is is great. I wonder if he would have joined the Rebellion. He saw what his devotion to the Empire led to. The show had to kill him, in my opinion. He had helped to facilitate a massacre, even though he didn’t know what the Empire was using him for. For a moment we see that Dedra was deeply affected by what happened. You almost feel bad for her, but then she aggressively straightens her uniform like she’s trying to iron out the genocide wrinkles.

Lezine changing the chant to a singing of the Ghorman national anthem was so powerful. The Ghor were so close to starting the violence themselves, but it quickly became a peaceful protest instead. Yet the Empire still chose to massacre them because they had the authority to do so.

Oh Sweet Addie, you clearly feel this so deeply, it’s hard to be an empath. This episode is tough to get through for sure even if you’ve already watched it. The Empire is pure evil and no surprise they’d resort to false flag tactics to get wha they want. KX droids are basically Terminators so the Empire really did want to exterminate the Ghorman people.

This might be the most haunting episode of television I've ever seen.

If you look closely, Syril was lowering his gun after Cassian asked him who he was. Syril is one of the triumphs of the narrative. He’s designed to be Luke Skywalker if he was born in the Empire. He’s a staunch rule follower who believes that the Empire are doing what’s best, and in this episode he is confronted by the truth. He wanted to be the hero, but he discovered he was fighting for the villains. And in that final moment with Cassian, he realizes that his ‘ultimate rival’ doesn’t even know who he is. Perfect tragedy.

I feel like Syril just experienced the push to switch sides after seeing the machinations of his beloved Empire and the betrayal from Dedra, but his blind rage at Cassian got the better of him. To build up this huge rivalry in your head with someone that lasted for years and then to realize they didn't even know who you were had to be crushing... and for that to be the last thing you heard and felt... truly a tragic character.

This show hits so much harder given what’s going on in the world today. The parallels are scary. The calculation. The false narrative of the media. The malleability of truth and facts And I know Syril is not exactly a good guy. But his story came to a tragic end. To find out you were actually the bad guy And the double meaning of the title of the episode “who are you?” Not only is Syril forced to ask himself “Who am I?” What do I stand for? But the realization that Cassian, this arch nemesis you built up in your mind for years. This person that has consumed every minute of your thoughts for years didn’t even know who you were 😭
