Happy Wednesday, Addie. I'm so glad that you enjoyed Arrival (2016). I'm definitely looking forward to watching this movie, soon. However, I also suggest Sicario (2015), a crime action thriller that's NOT in the sci-fi realm because it deals with FBI Special Agents bringing down a Mexican drug cartel. It's also brutally violent and very intense as well. #SicarioForAddieCounts

Speaking of Denis Villeneuve, who directed this movie and Sicario (2015), I also suggest Prisoners (2013), Blade Runner 2049 (2017, but watch the 2007 Final Cut of Blade Runner (1982) first), Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024). #MoreDenisVilleneuveForAddieCounts

This is probably a humble brag, but I'm an acquaintance of the guy who was Amy Adams' voice coach when she was living here in Minnesota.

This is one that genuinely feels like a new experience the second time. Seeing it when you know overall what’s going on brings out new structure.

Happy Wednesday, Addie! 😊 So glad that you really liked this movie. Definitely looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Another great movie with Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams that I highly recommend is the 2013 movie "American Hustle". Have a great day today! 😊

Another Denis Villeneuve movie that I'm also throwing in is Sicario (2015). #SicarioForAddieCounts

I don't think there is a single movie Denis Villeneuve hadn't seen success on. Every movie in any genra he has done had major success. I want to throw in other movies he did: Sicario (2015) and both Blade runner films. He directed the 2nd one :)

Alex Tan

I'm also throwing in Dune (2021) & Dune: Part Two (2024). #DuneForAddieCounts (EDIT) I second Sicario (2015). That movie is going to be an intense and brutal watch for her. #SicarioForAddieCounts

Saw this in theaters. It reminded me that there are still original and mind blowing movies being made.

Luis Fernandez

Gotta admit I'm not a big Denis Villeneuve fan. I think his visuals are top notch, but (for me) his storytelling is always unsatisfying in one way or another. That said, I'd run to the theatres if they made a sequel to this movie where Louise returns to her classroom and continues her lecture on why Portuguese sounds different from other Romance languages. (I would argue that it doesn't so I'd love to hear what she had to say) Just two straight hours at a blackboard going over Portuguese, refusing to comment on the aliens.

Alex Tan

Agreed. But it would make a great reaction from Addie. After seeing her reaction to The Dark Knight (2008), I was aiming to suggest more intense movies to her. #MoreIntenseMoviesForAddieCounts

I love the reaction :) Addie! :) ::Smiles:: Fight or flight response!!! LOL This one as well as many others goes into my "One of the Greatest Movies" list! That opening sequence is hard. If 'you' notice or look closely - the flash forwards don't come back till sometime after she starts communicating with them. The music and sound effects - at times it was a bit hard to determine which was which! But that made it more intriguing! Their picto-grams where incredible! I thought that there might be a 'thickness' component to them. lol When we finally find out that Abbott "Is in death process" was a sad moment. As for Louise choosing to 'go through what she's "already seen" knowing the outcome' that yikes! But here's the thing - could you actually 'change what's in the future' with that ability? We get a moment when the General tells Louise and shows her... Hmm!!!

The movie brought up the topic of languages and how it influences how we view the world is an interesting one. I speak only English but years ago I asked a childhood friend who spoke the Shanghai Chinese dialect at home if he *thinks* in Shanghainese when he speaks that language, meaning does he formulate his thoughts in that language or does he first think of what he wants to say in English and then translate them into Shanghainese? He replied that he *thinks* of his replies in whichever language he is conversing with - I guess because he's completely fluent in both English and Shanghainese, much like a native speaker would do. Along those lines I asked a co-worker who was a naturalized U.S. citizen of Panjabi Indian origin if she dreamed in English or Panjabi and she said she dreams only in English. She's lived in the U.S. for a long time and has almost no accent. If I could ask her a follow-up question it would be if she ever dreamed of older family members or being back in India, did she then dream of speaking Panjabi? There are of course cultures around the world with no written language and generations pass down oral histories. Some, like the native Hawaiians, now have a phoneticized language to put into text. However, I wonder if something is lost when conveying stories in text alone - a more extreme example of how phone text messaging is sometimes misconstrued by the recipient.

“Mommy and Daddy talk to animals.” “Non-zero-sum game.” Our two hints that Ian was Daddy In a perfect world, Abbott and Costello reward Louise and Ian with the cure for Hannah

Oh my god, you watching my favorite movie! I still consider it one of the best :)

I, too, would love to have a 2 hour lecture on such a thing. I think that the major difference between Portuguese and Spanish is the timing of the syllables. Spanish (not including Catalan) is a lot closer to French and Italian while Portuguese (though not Brazillian Portuguese!) is a lot closer to German and English. Though I'm sure more modern speakers blend closer together, such is the nature of language. I'm sure there are other aspects I can't remember but it's been more than decade since my last Spanish class!

Luis Fernandez

...must resist going off on a long tangent.... I'm a (Mexican) Spanish speaker and I can understand a fair amount of spoken Brazilian Portuguese; I've unfortunately not known anyone from Portugal so I have no experience with "standard" Portuguese. I wonder if the differences are similar to French and Canadian French (not that I know either). Ok I have to stop, I find this topic far too interesting and I have to be productive today heh

Bladerunner 2049 is one of the best sequels ever made, at least for me. The original may be more groundbreaking/important in film influence, and it is a great movie, but 2049 is far more enjoyable for me. And so pretty.

Sean Murphy

I wonder if the atmosphere she was exposed to is what caused it.

In the end that ability to see time in a non-linear way is a tool and a weapon. Louise used it as a tool to end the conflict with China, but it also was the weapon that caused her separation when she told Ian that she knew Hannah was going to die.
