Welcome to TNBA! It’s gonna be a fun ride. Dick finally made his choice to distance himself from Bruce in terms of being Robin, and now it’s time for Tim Drake to step in! Just for clarification, you actually have met Tim before, he was the current Robin in the Arkham games (he had the shaved head). Typically, Tim is the third Robin, coming in after Jason Todd’s short-lived career. His traditional backstory is that he tends to be older than when Dick and Jason both became Robin, and as a fan and follower of Batman, he actually deduced Bruce’s identity, and with Jason’s “death”, Bruce offers to take in Tim as the next Robin, which Tim accepts. Now, when it comes to TNBA, Jason and his story were deemed too violent for kids, even by the writers, and so the decision was made to skip over Jason and go straight to Tim. The compromise they made was that they would essentially give Tim Jason’s backstory of having neglectful parents and Bruce finding him messing with the Batmobile, and they’d also give Tim Jason’s red suit. So basically this Tim Drake is more or less actually Jason Todd’s skeleton with a Tim Drake skin put over it. Fun fact though: Jason Todd/Red Hood was actually retconned into the DCAU in the very most TNBA tie-in comics, Batman: The Adventures Continue, so that’s pretty cool. Also I should clarify that they didn’t “age down” Barbara, she’s older than she was in her last appearance because that’s how time works. She’s still around the same age as Dick, as in college or likely college graduate at this point. Edit: God forbid anyone say anything even remotely not cheerful and positive

So we are here! BTAS final season and the one with the most change as now the animation is the same as STAS considering you watched the crossover. You noticed Barbara is now fully involved with the Bat Family, and we have Tim Drake who was the Robin in the Arkham games so you have met him before but here’s a twist is that he has Jason Todd’s backstory here. The reason was because the BTAS writers didn’t want to introduce Jason because at this point, the character is still dead and he wouldn’t come back as Red Hood until the mid 2000’s. Also because they didn’t want to introduce kids to a character whose fate is to die so they skip to Tim cause of how violent that would be for kids and it’s not a spoiler for the show. BTAS does its own thing to the characters & storylines that it doesn’t follow the comics exactly. Hope that helps. :)

The Amazing Webhead

In terms of Dick not being Robin anymore, you’ll find out later this season ;)

Oh yeah! I'm so ready to see your reaction to this final season of BTAS or what it’s actually called, “The New Batman Adventures”/TNBA. As I had mentioned before in one of your reactions, the episodes in this season are a bit more mature as the restrictions weren't too heavy on the show as they were on BTAS. So they could get away with some things in this show. Like in this episode, Two Face hitting and attempting to kill Tim Drake. I’m curious to see what you’ll think of the rest of the season cause there are some episodes that get pretty dark

Also as some have probably mentioned in the comments, Tim Drake in this show is a combination of both Jason Todd and Tim Drake as they used Jason's origin for Tim. They also used some of Jason's personality for Tim with how he's portrayed. However the parts that are Tim from the original comics, for one, is the red Robin suit that Tim wears. While it's implied that Dick once wore it, it is not the same suit he wore in BTAS and it's actually not a suit that Dick has ever worn, even in the comics as far as I know. The suit is actually inspired by one that Tim did wear in the comics. Another thing is Tim's age in the show is more accurate to how he is in the comics as he's actually much younger than Dick, Barbara, and even Jason. For some reason in the Arkham games, they decided to age up Tim and put him in a relationship with Barbara when usually in the comics and other iterations, Dick and Barbara are the ones together. But here it's much more accurate. Also from the comics that they used for Tim in this show is that he's a massive fan of Batman and Robin

Also as far as the next show after BTAS and STAS, while I am very excited for you to watch Justice League, I hope you at least watch Batman Beyond and Static Shock before Justice League Unlimited as there are references to both shows in JLU that I personally think would be more impactful, after watching BB and SS. But I am excited for the next DC animated and live action movies you plan to watch. Superman and Batman's relationship and banter in the Public Enemies movie is probably my favorite out of any of the movies and I think you're going to love it!

Yea to answer ur questions with NO SPOILERS, The final season of batman the animated series was renamed to the new batman adventures. Same show but they retitled it and updated the animation to closely match the animation of superman the animated series and create a synergy across both shows since they’re in the same universe along with justice league justice league unlimited, batman beyond, static shock and more. Theres also a significant gap between the last season and this one where obviously dick has transitioned out of robin, everyone is a little older and now Tim is here. The show also goes into darker territories unlike ever before. This adaptation of robin combines Tim and Jason. Jason was the street kid whose father was killed by two face in the comics but the part where Tim is obsessed with batman and learns his identity is from Tim’s comic origins. I recommend reading the origin of Tim drake from the comics since there really isn’t an adaptation of his real origin in any cartoon or film. This is the closest we got to his origin. This is why batman the animated series is the definitive batman adaptation as it loosely adapts the most iconic characters and stories from the comics but this show really is just scratching the surface of batman stories as I’m sure you’ve seen in other films and cartoons you’ve watched. You haven’t even gotten to the justice league or beyond phase of Bruces life which opens a whole world of possibilities no to mention even MORE robins you’ll learn of in time. I HOPE THIS HELPS!

This is just Tim with Jason Todd's origin😄But his own backstory is a lot more tragic😭

Love Tim, and this is probably my favorite season. I always go into a new piece of DC or Marvel media with the assumption that it's a standalone universe, unless explicitly told otherwise. Often times events will crossover while the details are vague or changed. I seriously suggest watching these shows in release order. They build on and reference each other, so it's pretty critical.

Welcome to S3, hope you enjoy the ride! Even with raised standards for violence, because of the brutality of Jason Todd's story the animated continuity skipped over him, having Tim Drake take over the role after Dick's departure. That itself is an interesting mystery that gets explained later. Meanwhile Drake is used as an 'outsider' character in this season to re-introduce things in the Bat-verse that new viewers might not be fully up to speed on. It works well. The art style changes everyone seems to take issue with are Joker and Riddler, but the new style brings us more in line with the Superman series, allowing more fluid animation and cleaning up a lot of small errors. 3x1 brings a lot more characters to the fore, showing off their redesigns. Funny how they used the original S1 intro, as if trying to reassure people it's still the same show.

So this version of Tim Drake is pretty much it's own thing. In fact I don't think we've ever had an accurate representation of his origin in anything besides the Bio in Arkham City. He seems to be a combination of Tim Drake and Jason Todd. Also I assume that Jason Todd never existed in this universe since they never mention him on any of the animated series connected to the DCAU. If you're curious, he first appeared in Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying, written by Marv Wolfman. Also the Robin comics by Chuck Dixon is pretty good.

WerewolfF14

whilst originally Jason todd didn't exist in the DCAU he was brought into canon with the modern DCAU tie in comic "Batman the adventure continues"

WerewolfF14

Tim and Barbara's relationship is exclusive to the arkham games. In most other media, including the comics, she tends to be paired with Dick. Her looking younger is just because of the art style change, which is made to match superman the animated series.

WerewolfF14

This version of Tim Drake largely takes Jason Todd's backstory, with his criminal father having worked for Two Face. That being said it does still retain some aspects of Tim's origin. Mainly that he basically forces Bruce to take him as the new Robin during a fight with Two Face.

Mage Reacts

"because that's how time works" dude lol this is a huge reason I don't check Patreon comments anymore. Can you please just take care to be kind? She *looks* younger to me.

Mage Reacts

Also, I acknowledged I met Tim Drake in the Arkham games a few times.

KrakenKing

I didn’t say anything bad I wasn’t trying to be rude, I wrote all that other stuff too 😭

KrakenKing

Wait if you don’t check Patreon or YouTube comments then what do you check?

Mage Reacts

Me: *sets a clear boundary to just be kind* You: GoD fOrBid aAPPareNTLY I can"T say anything MEAN!

Mage Reacts

Twitch, Discord, YouTube comments that are MODERATED to remove a holes like you. Jesus, what is wrong with you?

Mage Reacts

I WANT to check Patreon because literally everyone else (except you and one other dude) is kind. They disagree, but they're respectful. You don't get a free pass to be negative and snarky because you shared other random info. You've consistently been rude and belittling--I recognize your name. Anywhore, I'm over this and blocking you, please reflect because I feel bad for any other creators you encoutner.

KrakenKing

Lmfao I’ve never been “mean” once here ever, this is totally out of nowhere 😂 Call me mean and then be totally rude to me, whatever you say

Mage Reacts

Do you have a rec for any comics centered on Tim? :)

WerewolfF14

Start with his debut story “lonely place of living”. The current trade paperback of “death IN the family” collects it alongside death in the family as lonely place sorta acts as a sequel to it. After that I recommend waiting for the upcoming “robin compendium” dc are releasing in either June or July i forget. It collects a bunch of his early stories. Including his 3 mini series and the start of his ongoing comic. At some point I’d also recommend the Young Justice comics. They’re about a team of young heroes with Tim being their leader. Though I’d recommend getting more into justice league stuff before reading Young justice.

Narutoanime16

I love how they introduce Tim here and other than the games this is the only Tim Drake I know other than the one in Young Justice but yess! Can’t wait for you to see more especially now that you saw how Batman & Superman first met it’s just so well written and all the characters your gonna love Justice League

Unstablebeast

so this isnt tims normal origin, its more jason todds origin but tim drakes personality. spoiler warning for comics incase you dont want to see it in the comics iirc the original origins of tim were he was also a rich kid, but his parents died on a trip so he was left alone. he was a batman superfan and a fan of the flying graysons, and he figured out who robin was by seeing him do a move only the flying graysons ever pulled off, and from that he found out who batman was and sought him out

James Wayne

You can watch Justice League before Batman beyond. It's Justice league unlimited that you need to watch after Batman Beyond. Justice League has some crossovers and spoilers for Batman: Beyond

Casey

Love your reaction as always! And if you wanted, you could watch Batman Beyond and Justice League at the same time, alternating like you do with Batman TAS and Superman TAS. That way you can get your Justice League fix and start Batman Beyond. I would recommend trying to finish Batman Beyond before getting to Justice League Unlimited, though. 🙂

Brodie Vickers

Maybe try to finish Superman and Batman as close together as possible. Then watch Batman Beyond and Justice League side by side, Beyond is slightly shorter so it should all work out.

James Wayne

There's a great ongoing comics called Nightwing: Leaping into the Light written by Tom King, it should give enough to know about Nightwing. Another thing I would recommend would be to watch Comicstorian videos on YouTube. He basically reads comics back to you in dramatic voices. Incase you don't want go and by comics he can help. He also does discussion videos like "Why Did Dick Become Neighing?". Its actually very complicated and to long to type on here so I would say just go watch one of his videos

Will Frangules

Personally, this is the series I could love as a kid. The New Batman Adventures elevates itself from the original batman animated series with both it's updated animation and its storytelling. So many great episodes. After you get through this season you can start the Justice League (or batman beyond if you wanted). The greatest adaptation of DC. I also think that this version of Barbara (played this time by the GOAT Tar Strong, who eventually takes on the role of Harley Quinn) is vastly better than the animated series version of her character. Can't for what's in store for you Meg!

WerewolfF14

Nightwing Leaping into Light is written by Tom Taylor not Tom King and I personally wouldn't recommend it as a first nightwing comic.

Mage Reacts

Omg, I had no idea it was Tara! What a legend!

Brandon Gibbs

First of all this season 3 is called "The New Batman Adventures". Second he's gonna be a little more dark and unreasonable than how he was in the last seasons. Anyway after this and Superman TAS I look forward to seeing you watch Justice League TAS and hopefully Static Shock too!
