Paradise Lost (Pt 1 & 2)

WerewolfF14

the little girl wonder woman saves in the beginning of the episode is called "Cassie" by her mother. This is likely a reference to to Cassie Sandsmark, who in the comics is one of the young women to use the name "Wonder Girl". The reference is further enforced by the girl being blonde and Diana referring to her as "little sister" (in the comics she sees the various Wonder Girls as her sisters) The "Bernie's Newsstand" is likely a reference to the dc alt universe comic Watchmen in which Bernie's newsstand is a reoccurring location. Hurricane Gardner is likely a reference to Gardner Fox, the writer who created the justice league in the comics and wrote for their first 8 years of publication. Felix Faust is a justice league villain who first fought them in issue 10 of their original series. Since then he has fought several other characters, especially on the magical side. Interestingly the Wonder Woman comic also had just started publishing a story arc that would be collected under the name "Paradise Lost" the same month these episodes aired. Flash telling Manhunter "you really are from Mars" when he doesn't see the appeal of all women tribe who have never met a man is possibly a sly reference to the controversial book "men are from Mars, women are from Venus" in which its proposed that many relationship problems stem from men and women being so psychologically different they may as well be from different planets. Many have refuted this view over the years, for example Julia T Wood argued the differences are largely social constructs not psychological and that both genders ultimately want the same thing when you break it down. But I could be looking too much into the line as well.

You are right that some Justice League members don't show up (in this case John Stewart and Hawkgirl) in every episode as the writers and creators had a hard time to include everyone in each episode so that's why some don't show up. But this is the first episode that focuses mainly Wonder Woman and her cast of characters and lore. You're also right that Paradise Lost is a reference to the John Milton poem but also to Paradise Island (another name for Themyscira) The whole romance with Hippolyta and Hades is original to this show, similar to the romance she has with Ares in the Wonder Woman movie you watched. In the comics (mostly modern comics), she is usually romantically linked to another Amazonian named Philippus, who is also her right hand person and even helped train Diana to be a warrior. Also WerewolfF14 is right with how the Hurricane Gardner is a reference to comic writer Gardner Fox and the little blonde girl named Cassie is a reference to Cassandra Sandsmark, the second Wonder Girl. And Felix Faust is a known villain for the Justice League in the comics. I agree with you on wanting more Wonder Woman content and why we don't get to see more of her or projects mainly focused on her. And what sucks is that there hasn't really been a perfect portrayal of her character outside the comics but I will say this version from the DCAU is maybe one of the few that is really great, at least to me. It makes me hope that she will have a massive presence in James Gunn DCU since even though he has mentioned that they do plan to do stuff with her, there hasn't been any mention of her and it makes me hope the reason why is because she plays a massive role that Gunn doesn't want to spoil. But thanks a ton for this reaction. To reference what you said on discord, I'm so glad you are in your obsessed Justice League era right now and we don't have to wait long for reactions to the next episodes and the DCAMU movies, which I can't wait for Throne of Atlantis next!!

Well Meg in this one Wonder Woman finally returned home only to find in in ruins and all the amazons including her mother the queen turned to stone by a mysterious wizard named Faust who forced her into getting pieces of a key to free the underworld god HADES!!! Course after they managed to seal him back in the pit and saved the amazons Hippolyta exiled Diana because she brought men onto the island, men who just helped to save everyone.

Wonder Woman's time to get some focus and backstory. Themiscyra has indeed been described as 'Paradise Island', and is now lost to Diana. The Luciferian theme is also applicable for Hades, and both he and the sorcerer Felix Faust are major Wonder Woman villains. In fact Diana is either friends with or the enemy of pretty much the entire Greek pantheon. This very series probably is most people's favorite media depiction of Wonder Woman. She got like two animated movies, the live-action ones, the campy Lynda Carter series back in the 80s... and that's it. Ridiculously little compared to the other members of the 'Trinity'. Surely if Batman can get 4+ animated series', Diana deserves at least one? I even wrote an outline for about 20 episodes. Funny how so many are up in arms about female empowerment being taken too far leading to a flood of ill-developed Mary Sues in current fiction, yet few such complaints were ever levelled at the original icon because she's a more balanced character. Not perfect despite being from 'Paradise' and having a certain boyfriend constantly refer to her with the nickname 'Angel'.

Definitely been hanging out with you too long to already know your smash choices before you mention them. Of course it's the rat-faced tongue man 🤣
