The Expanse 4x1

Welcome to the best season of expanse

LankyRambo

I'm down for a re-read and booktalk! Holden is still taking anti-cancer drugs from the radiation he got hit with on Eros with Miller. They mention it a bit every season - I remember it being a more common topic in the books. Excited for the season! This was a fun one when it came out - New network, new location, same old Expanse!

The "lay of the land" has another common meaning which is "the information you need about the current situation". I think this this may have simply been Murtry's way of inviting Holden away from the belters so that he only got Murtry's side of the story, assuming that because Holden was an "Inner" he would side with him.

Also "Drummer and the Space Kids" should be a band ^_^

Next to "Ocean", the song playing when Bobby reaches the Ocean on Earth, the tune playing when the crew steps on Illus is another emotional dope score by that genius Clinton Shorter. When Bobby goes into the apartment, the person leaving is named "Rana", as a little Easter Egg for Rana from The Normies. And holy fuck! This Prime now doing ads for a PAID effing service BS is going to ruin staying in sync and just overall reduce further enjoyment... Time to reduce streaming services and go back to Blu-ray/physical mediums. Good thing I of course bought the full Expanse Blu-rays already (though as far as I can tell, even there one gets shafted, with S5 & 6 being without any extras, not even the X-Ray featurettes).

"I wonder what rain tastes like" is also a line from S1 Miller. He asked that to Holden when they were escaping Eros. We know that the Protomolecule repurposes everything it gets its hands on, so he's replaying Miller's lines for its own purposes.

I immediately cancelled my Prime membership and I've begun purchasing individual shows and entire seasons from Google Play Movies & TV. They play just fine with full reactions (like this one).

I'm also in favor of book discussions. The writing takes you inside the heads of the characters. This includes Melba/Clarissa/Peaches and even Protomiller!

The Rana character who left the apartment right as Bobbie entered is her sister-in-law. As mentioned above she was named after Rana of the Normies. The Normie's channel was one of the first channels to react to the expanse. Ty Franck the author commented on their video, "That was for you Rana." Also the Roci has a new weapon, a railgun. Alex test fires it as they get close to Illus. I guess he fired it at an ice rock in space. In season 1 somebody mentions that small warships don't usually have railguns because they take up a lot of space and require a lot of power. But it looks like they got it to work with the Roci. I don't know if you picked up on it but the belters and the inners have different names for that planet. It's Illus to the belters and New Terra to Earth.

While there is certainly a perceived change in quality from S3 to S4, it has nothing to do with the switch to Amazon. The show has always been (and still remains) the property of Alcon Entertainment. SyFy and Amazon purchased the streaming rights respectively. The producers have said the production budget remained essentially the same, but that with each year, they “learned what they were doing” and came up with a better product. To clarify, Drummer and Ashford are NOT shooting Belter ships. They’re policing the area of the Ring and Ring Space to keep pirates (who they will shoot) away from settler ships that are piling up at the blockade. Also, they have not gone through any of the rings other than the Sol ring. Clarissa worked aboard the Roci with Amos while they were returning to the Inner planets from the ring (end of S3.E13). While not spelled out in the show, that trip takes several months.

Yay been looking forward to this! Landing on an extra solar planet is true SciFi so yes, I do love this season and story line. We did have to wait a long time for Season 4 as the show was saved in May 2018, the sets were saved and the show went back into production that fall. We didn't get Season 4 until December 2019 so it was a year and a half of waiting which was not an easy feat! I think that was when I really started getting into reactions to the show because it was hard to wait so long. The whole season dropped at once in Dec 2019 which was kind of a mistake so Season 5 came out in Dec 2020 (during the dark times of the pandemic!) and the first three episodes were dropped all at once and then the rest of the episodes came out weekly after that. My understanding of the nickname Peaches was due to her cover name, Melba, ie Peach Melba? Never heard another explanation that made sense to me.

I think the thing that confuses people about the rail gun is that after Alex test fires it (into a random asteroid, as far as I can tell), he says "take that, blue goo!" and people immediately start looking for meaning in that statement. Blue goo? Was there protomolecule on the asteroid? On Ilus? On the Roci? Why did he say that? The truth, as far as I can tell, was that Alex was actually just speaking metaphorically, sort of saying "now that we have a rail gun, we are just as powerful as the protomolecule and its various creations." It was a rather hypothetical declaration of superiority, with actually very little evidence to support it, but that's kind of the way Alex thinks.
