Everyone was harmed during the making of this video 🤣

Red

Finally, an antagonist that I hate more than Larson Witch, when I get you...🗡️🗡️🧨

juno ✨

crying. sobbing even. ohhhh man

SavageIvyy

For Harlan saying in is AMA he wanted people to believe there's always hope, he's sure doing his best to punish us for it. With that 'last choice' like idk

Siegfried

hey wtf. i needed my heart for living

Aster

if we don’t choose ‘be your own’ im going to explode and die

Angrybunny

Harlan yo wtf!!! You're killing me

Kaden S

I'm just glad I didn't have to listen to this on my lunch break this week, now I can ugly cry in the peace of my own home 😭

Siegfried

hard disagree - the hag is right about one thing, if john is capable of change now it's because he has always been. he doesn't have to keep running from himself! the king in yellow has already proven he wants what john has, they want the same thing!

SavageIvyy

Didn't the king toss John into the dark world trash bin last time? Like John had changed too much to be compatible

Jeanette

I KNEW IT !!!

Mice and Moonbeams

Well .... That wasn't cool ... Also picked up my sister from work around the 7 min mark told her she couldn't talk for like three mins. She's like after.... What the hell did I just listen to??? What was that!!!!

Jo

Hey good episode, great job on all of us for our choices so far, I'm just gonna go be facedown on the floor for the next 18 hours or so, yall be easy though

SavageIvyy

I also feel like these choices were routing us to the same place after choosing to go after the talisman or not. Like nothing really changed beyond how John was confronted. We're still where we would have been if we went the other way for the most part, beyond John deciding this morals. So. Where is this 'last choice' going? I still don't like that phrasing. The King tossed John aside before so what does becoming whole entail? It kinda reads like a dead end. John becoming something new is an uncertain way forward. But we're still very much without an actual way out or answer here. It still feels like we're constantly coming back to the center of the maze

Skye

I have no idea how John is going to get out of this and I can’t help but be reminded of that line from undertale “despite everything it’s still you” with the option to “be your own” I think maybe it’s time to just be John? BUT at the same time I’m genuinely torn on which option is best going forward I need processing time lol

Allison Cossitt

Lol, I did the same thing with my niece! I'm like, ok so, just roll with, it I may cry, if I curl up into a ball just pat my head.

Allison Cossitt

I figured I'd listen to this as I made dinner and I got as far as putting the water on to boil and now I'm standing here watching the water boil and clutching my heart. Dinner will be late tonight.

Rook

Early episode? Hell yeah! Man, I joined the patreon in April and can I just say I'm having a great fucking time. Not a single regret on any of the votes, even the talisman one. This is getting so intense. I love it

MomoTheMoogle

Holy shit, what an episode...I feel like every choice we've made recently has bitten us HARD, and now I'm so turned around and scared that I have absolutely no idea what to choose...but we have to choose because NOT choosing is always the worst idea, and I just can't deal with this choice 😭😭😭 Harlan, we love you, but duuuuuude this is brutal [insert inarticulate screeching here]

Its-always-spiders

Wait........ So why DIDN'T Hastur just off Arthur? Are we implying bug-witch knows more than a literal cosmic god about what happens to John if Arthur dies?

Rook

Oh I also didn't realize the Booth entity will just straight up lie to us about the choices. What a sneaky bitch lol I love him.

Waffle 427

I’m screaming! John?!!!!!!

David Shaw

Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it… This choice requires thinking; something that most of us didn’t do last time. Think what might happen if John becomes himself, or wholly The King in Yellow. Would he still feel the need for revenge on the hag? What would his new purpose be? What of Kane and the bargain struck? Food for thought…

Rook

Idk maybe the witch didn't know for sure and killed arthur because she didn't have anything to lose if she was wrong 🤷

Positive

I can't listen yet but I just know that this chaoter will ruin me emotionally and I can't wait for it to sink my teeth into me later tonight.

Kaden S

It's been a day and now I have thoughts about the choice... I wanna pick becoming himself bc that's new and forward, but becoming whole is intriguing... he's beat yellow once at this point, does that mean he could take more control as king? Ugh this is such a big choice and we just can't know the implications til after we decide 😭

Positive

Well..... That..... That ruined me. Harlan, my god, bravo. Just. Bravo.

Red

So we all understand this is a trap, right? Like it couldn't be more obvious if there was a neon flashing sign above her head. Think about it. (Not to shame anyone for their choices, ofc, just. Come with me on this journey a sec pls). This whole encounter with the witch has been, play by play, from the abuser's emotional manipulation handbook. She keeps beating John down and beating him down, ripped his last comfort from him, and now, that he's at his lowest suddenly she's like, oh I want to help you. Come to mummy, dear, I can make it better. Make you strong again. Whole. Key phrasing, that. *Whole*. Not "I can reunite you with the king and make you a god in your own right again", no. Whole. Just sweet enough to be tempting, just vague enough not to actually tell us or John anything. Whole...at what cost, witch? Think. What does she stand to gain from this? She's clever, she wouldn't hand John a weapon he could then immediately turn against her to help himself or Arthur. Anyway. All this to say, this is a deal with the devil, John. Fucking hell, don't take it. Be your own person.

Red

Eh, now that I'm thinking about it I should have waited and put this in the poll comments when it releases. Oh well. Got it down now before I forgot about it, at least.

Marknado

Welp… none of it matters anymore lol

Nicky

If he chooses to be his own he can decide what being whole means and how he might make that happen later

Nicky

I don’t see it as messing up. I think all the choices made so far were valid and worthwhile. And now I want John to chose to be his own instead of whatever she decides him being “whole” looks like

SavageIvyy

So I've had a couple days to wallow in my despair and it got me thinking at where we're headed with this. Because in a story sense it's a strange place to A: end your story and B: kill off one of your two protagonists that make the show for good. The hag isn't a mortal. I don't believe it because in 10 minutes of arriving in the 13th century she's halted our progress to a stop and made an embarrassment out of both Hastur and Nyarlathotep. She's not a human. And she's been jerking us around and gaslighting us the entire time. Every choice has been a monkeys paw, a diversion, or a moral audit for John. I saw on the discord a lot of people mentioning dark world arc and I think that's exactly where we're going with this. John needs to face his demons from the dark world, and I could see him having to fish Arthur's soul out of the dark world as a way to get him there again. Arthur is probably the ONLY thing he'd go back for. I also saw the idea of John and Arthur swapping spots on who's inside who's head and I like this idea a lot. Their relationship is the core of this series. It doesn't make sense for one half to be gone for good. It does make sense to force John to face his demons and flip the trust script

Its-always-spiders

Lol yeah it's hard to take a death this early that seriously. Especially since Arthur's been hurt so many times and we don't know HOW he keeps surviving so it's hard to feel there are any stakes when it keeps happening. 😂 But you brought up a great point! I hope we get to see John grow. That'd be so interesting since it seems like he really has been trapped with Arthur's bad choices since the Dreamlands. How would John interact with the world without Arthur? Also lol-ing rn cuz it sounds like the Witch has been having this full conversation with John while Arthur's crumbled on the floor like a pile of wet tissues 😂

SavageIvyy

😅 Pile of wet tissues is Arthur's favorite pose! Also lol when we killed Arthur this time we got him and John rapping because Harlan didn't want to ruin the tension in the story so... lol. And he said to not keep killing Arthur just to get more so I have some faith in that 🤣

Amy

Well fellow Voices, it does seem we are in the depths of despair. But! I do think there is hope in being your own person all the same.

Nicky

What the choices are? Sure. What the choices mean/represent/might lead to? BJ’s playing his own game and is not to be taken at face value

Nicky

Oh, I’m confident Kayne is going to hold him to the deal whichever way he chooses. I feel like season 1 John was trying to figure out who/what he was (due to loss of pre Dark World memory) Season 2 and on he has been on a journey of figuring out who he wants to be for himself. Choosing “whole” puts his fate in the hands of the hag and whatever she decides that means. Who can say what that is and if it has anything to do with returning to being the “full” King in Yellow or something else entirely? Choosing to be his own respects his struggle toward defining his own identity.

Nicky

He’s on the slab, not the floor 😆 Even if from the meta the stakes don’t seem high in that “Arthur will probably be fine,” within The narrative the stakes still feel high because John doesn’t have the same meta perspective and it’s about how he copes and what kind of character growth/regression he goes through as a result

Its-always-spiders

Oh ty for the correction. It sounded like he landed on the floor to me. And I kinda agree except John's been there for all of Arthur's bounce backs same as us. He's probably skewed John's perspective on what's survivable for most humans with all the trauma he's been through! 💀

Rook

Yeah I'm relistening to the show on here so I can hear his commentary and get a better read on him. My first take away being he REALLY doesn't like us lmao. I thought the attitude was because we were fucking up but no, my man just kinda hates our guts no matter what we do 🤷 There's no pleasing some people smh Also do we know if he's an actual in universe entity?

Nicky

His true nature/identity is still a bit unclear, bit I think a pretty common theory is that he’s a version of John that’s watching but not present / interfering in canon. Malevolent started as a Patreon exclusive bonus for supporters of Invictus Stream and Dice Shame, so he is very much filling an antagonistic GM role

Nicky

Do you know how to connect the patreon feed so you can listen in your preferred podcast app instead of scrolling through patron posts?

Nicky

In mobile, go to the main Invictus page, click the top right “…” next to the search icon, choose the option to get Audio RSS. I think from desktop it’s in the About section, but it is not in the About section for mobile. *shakes fist at Patreon for not being able to include screenshots/images in comments*

Nicky

If you use Spotify it works differently, but you can Google how to do it.

Nicky

I may know where a rollercoaster is going to end, but I still love the ride 🤷🏻‍♀️ Not a perfect analogy, but same vibe. John has witnessed/participated in several murders, soI think that gives him a good sense of what dead takes. He’s been told Arthur is dead and doesn’t see a way past that right now. He is clearly distraught and not thinking “obviously Arthur will be fine.” This is a guy that was so upset by someone else taking Arthur’s *attention* he tried to kill the man, and has been concerned for his safety and survival.

SavageIvyy

Yeah John is definitely not thinking clearly right now, our boy is lost in the rage fog. And Yoricks matter of fact statements aren't helping lol. Regardless of where this is going its fun to theorize and it's a ride

Fisher

i’ve seen some people equate to choosing to become whole as meaning that the hag is going to somehow make John become the King in Yellow again and gang, i’m sorry, but i just do not believe that’s the case. this isn’t a choice for John to join Yellow and become the King, it’s a choice to accept whatever definition of “whole” that the hag imagines for John. she holds contempt for the Old Ones, she’s said it this episode pretty blatantly and it makes no sense for why she’d be capable of merging John and Yellow or why she’d even want that. i understand dome’s hesitancy to give up on becoming “whole” due to belief that maybe it will give John more powers to help Arthur, but i don’t think that’s true either. she wants him to become like her. remember this!

Fisher

another point i’d like to say even if it’s three days late: some folks have mentioned how they believe killing Arthur was too easy and doesn’t make sense due to the fact that supposedly the King wasn’t able to just kill Arthur in order to retrieve John, due to them being “entangled,” and that this death in comparison is making those antagonists look impotent by comparison. and i think that’s a good line of thinking to remember: their entanglement. which is why i’m expecting it to actually be addressed pretty quickly here. one of the things i think is likely is that Arthur and John’s souls are still very much entangled, and only Arthur’s body has died - basically, John is keeping him anchored to this plane even if neither of them are aware of it. if death hasn’t been enough to separate them before, why would it now? all i’m saying is that sometimes we don’t get everything revealed about a situation right away, especially when something really tense is going on, and we just have to wait for the truth to reveal itself eventually. so don’t give up hope, trust the process and enjoy the anticipation if you can!

SavageIvyy

Yeah I definitely think you're onto something there! I think John will have the ability to pull Arthur back in some way

Its-always-spiders

That's what I'm saying! Hastur had no attachment to Arthur beyond him being in the way to get John back—just like the witch sees him as a useless obstacle. So why didn't Hastur do as the witch did and do this sooner??

Fisher

Also- when Arthur slits his throat in season 2, he does that before John leaves him. So Hastur’s anger and desperation there were presumably because he thought Arthur dying would interfere with him regaining John, which is another reason for why the King didn’t just kill Arthur himself.

Nicky

I think Fish and I have pretty clearly outlined some potential reasons…

Its-always-spiders

Fisher: Ok but that's why I'm confused! Season 2 established they were entangled and Hastur couldn't kill Arthur bc he'd lose John to the DW again. Nicky is arguing that Hastur didn't off Arthur for other reasons. So, if losing John to the DW was never a threat if Arthur lives, why didn't Hastur kill him? It raises questions about why this mortal in a hole who can control a fragment of a god has more insight and capabilities than an actual god in his domain!

Fisher

I told you already: killing Arthur would make it more difficult for Hastur to retrieve John. He NEEDED Arthur and John to be alive for his purposes of separating them properly. The Hag doesn’t need anything from Arthur. She hasn’t “figured it out” and killed Arthur to get to John, she doesn’t care! I also have a theory that since episode 40 John’s become more powerful on this plane and that may be why he’s still here (seemingly) without Arthur.

Fisher

I think what Nicky is trying to say here is that we don’t exactly know the full reason for why Arthur had to be alive for the King’s plan. The characters talked about it being because they would both go to the Dark World, but that’s not actually been proven to be true. Whether or not the King was worried about that, or there was some other reason - like he thought he would lose his best bargaining chip - that made him believe that keeping Arthur alive was important.

Nicky

Hastur wanted to retrieve/reassimilate a piece of himself he lost and has been searching for for years. Hag don’t know shit and gives no fucks about John and is doing a fuck around and find out

Nicky

I can do an in depth character analysis for each of them /compare and contrast essay if anyone wants that

Nicky

Character analysis is about compiling what’s presented in the text and its context, differentiating what is known, unknown, implied, could be inferred. Calling out what’s presented as fact vs what is theory/speculation is part of the deal. The way you are talking about this situation makes it seem you think it is an absurd turn of events that undermines the threat Hastur posed in earlier seasons, but I feel like it is perfectly reasonable and consistent with the nature of these different characters as they’ve been presented to us

Its-always-spiders

Ok but it kinda does and idk how you don't find it funny the witch did in 2 episodes what Hastur couldn't over 2 whole seasons. Pulling back, that is pretty damn funny. 🤣 (Edit: Parts. Chapters. You get what I mean. We're not that deep into the season yet!)

Nicky

She didn’t do anything Hastur couldn’t, she did something he chose not to. It doesn’t sound like you want to think about this any way other than what you’ve decided, so I’ll leave you to it.

Fisher

i mean, the King never wanted to kill Arthur, which was why he didn’t try. for whatever reason - if it’s bc he thought he and John would go to the dark world or something else - he clearly wasn’t trying to kill him, just break him mentally into giving up. i don’t really connect what he’s doing at all as what the hag’s done tbh. if the King wanted Arthur dead he’d be dead lmao. the real thing here is that the hag beat the Butcher! he also explicitly wanted and tried to kill Arthur unlike the King

Its-always-spiders

Fisher: I think that's where we see differently. I think Hastur totally would have killed Arthur, even if it meant making untangling harder. He's immortal, why wouldn't he have time for a long term project? But he couldn't because it would put John out of reach again. Without some sort of threat to his person, it seems silly he'd put up with all of Arthur's grandstanding and resistance unless it was for a very good reason he couldn't snap him like a twig. John's already shown he can be worn down with time and torture ala the DW, so why bother with Arthur at all if Hastur can focus on John? (Who, btw, he barely speaks to at all until the end of season 2, even if he's the goal.) Thank you btw for the discussion! I greatly appreciate your time debating with me! ❤️

Fisher

Okay, sorry, you've confused me and I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here so I'll just try to answer the best I can. I agree with you about Hastur needing a reason to keep Arthur alive, this is what I've been trying to say: The hag is not more powerful than the King in Yellow just because she killed Arthur and the King did not. The King had reasons to NOT kill Arthur, so he didn't try. The hag just stabbed him because she wanted to. Reading your comments it's coming off like you're asking "Why didn't the King just kill Arthur when he had the chance? Why is the hag able to do what the King couldn't do? Doesn't that make the King seem kind of lame?" And what I'M trying to say is: "The King could have killed Arthur very easily, he just had his reasons why he couldn't. Those reasons are that he thinks if he does, then Arthur AND John will go back to the Dark World, which will make untangling them impossible for him because the King cannot just go to the Dark World himself. The hag is not stronger than the King because she killed Arthur; she just didn't NEED to keep him alive, so she stabbed him just to prove a point. That doesn't make the King less of a threat or somehow weaker than the hag, it just proves they had entirely different motivations." Now, what IS strange is that previously in the show it's been mentioned that if Arthur dies, he and John go to the Dark World. Now that Arthur's died, John is somehow still here. Why is that? That's something we don't know the answer to yet, but what I'm positive we will get in a later chapter. My personal theory (not canon) is that John and Arthur's souls are still entangled, and John is strong enough to keep them both anchored to this plane, aka, Arthur's body has died but his soul is still stuck with John's. But that's just my theory.

Its-always-spiders

Fisher: Ah, I want to apologize then! I thought you were tackling it from the same side as Nicky, who Hastur wanted to win/break them and their connection wasn't why Hastur kept them alive. It seemed a silly theory to me bc unless Arthur's death is a threat to Hastur, he really does have all the time on the world to work on John if he just takes out Arthur. Anyway, you could say we ourselves got a little entangled there! 😁 I do understand your angle of why the Witch doesn't care vs Hastur does! That makes sense and so does your POV that John's gotten stronger. I think these are great POVs and theories! But what I stand by the fact that we're SUPER early into the season and we've seen the main killed off, so it's hard to take seriously as a viewer. (Of course something's gonna go down with Arthur being """dead""" already.) What's funny and does lessen Hastur for me is the ease at which she accomplished isolating John in 15 minutes when Hastur (unwilling or unable to end Arthur) had 3 months and a pit (and a decade of build up if we count the time John was in the book). And the fact that this is her domain and she's able to wrangle a god fragment in a way a god in HIS domain couldnt? It's like one of those scenes where a bunch of people struggle to lift a heavy thing and then one person does it in such an offhanded and easy way. The disproportionate effort she put in is hilarious.

Fisher

I see why’d you take it that way, but I also think that it’s important to consider John’s psychology in season 1 vs 5. He’s been through a LOT more rough shit. He’s basically just gotten back from the Dark World, he’s had to go through all the lying to get Arthur to NYC, the whole Oscar debacle, meeting Noel then very quickly losing him, reckoning with his other half aka Yellow and struggling with what his identity means now, having his lies exposed by Kayne, then experiencing Intermezzo and plunging he and Arthur’s relationship back into a difficult place all because of his own insecurity. And then they get to the windmill, go in scary cave, and then John pushes for Arthur to go after the talisman which leads to him accidentally directing Arthur right into the hag’s sword. So, I think that his mindset going into the confrontation with the hag has already been really different than anytime he encountered the King. Hags are very, very smart, and John’s in the right position to have all of her button pushing getting to him while he’s thrust into this identity crisis he’s already been spiraling into on his own. John’s been made vulnerable in a way we’ve never really seen before, and THEN Arthur is killed, only pushing him further to the brink of what he can handle. So it just makes sense to me from a character perspective; it’s more about John’s state of mind than anything else.

Travis Brannon

Maybe John will become a physical being and Arthur will be in his head. I could see kayne making that happen and especially taking his sight so he has to rely on Arthur.

Its-always-spiders

Fisher: Sorry dude, I'm not 100% clear how that ties into my early comment. Do you mind expanding? (Though you brought up all good things to consider though. John's really been going through it!!)

SavageIvyy

Yeah I LOVE this idea a lot. It'd be such a fun change up where John gets his body and he gets Arthur back. But in good old Kayne fashion now he's blind and Arthur gets the brunt of seeing the horrors. Same formula but the roles swapped and John has to prove himself and navigate the world

Travis Brannon

I also think we might see John reunited with Noel. Kayne didn’t kill him but sent him to Spain “maybe”

A leaf rake

i’m not sure how we’re going to girlboss gatekeep gaslight our way out of this one y’all…

David Shaw

Good points. In reading the comments I’m now wondering if “whole” is putting Arthur and John back together? Far fetched, I know since the hag killed Arthur. But still… Maybe whole means the hag will merge with John and use him to exact her revenge. Also what will it mean if he choses to be his own? Will John manifest fully and permanently? If not where will he be? In whom or in what will he reside? I’m going down a rabbit hole here….
