Let’s toss John a bone and get the book, my boy is trying

Layla

Agreed, I feel like after that talk we can't just. Ignore what he wants. Not on this one.

Brie

I see no reason not to go for the book

Megs

If this is another ploy to stall for time, then I have fallen for it completely! Let’s give our boy a chance!

HeavenlyBibi

I wanna choose the book, I really do, but I’m worried about the time gap in between running to the car, getting the book, and running back. Would it put Oscar at more risk? Will the book even help this time? Ahhhhhhhh I don’t know what to choose!

Nicky

I would rather get the book and not need / have it not be useful than not get the book and end up failing because something critical was inside. I don’t believe the basement is totally empty - I think something other than the worm/bug things is/are down there. Yes, the longer things take the higher the chance the worms find a way across the roof holes to Oscar and/or return to the basement, but stopping Scratch is the priority and I want to be as prepared as possible have the best chance of succeeding

I am breaking my habit of never posting to Patreon to list a series of facts as I see them, with a few editorial comments. But before I go on: If you read nothing else, I think my most persuasive argument is this, and it is my greatest fear about what the time delay fetching book from the car and attempting to read from it may cost us (and we do know that John's main trick lately has been time delays): There is a hole in the roof of the safe room, which the insects are desperately trying to find a way into, and where Oscar is unconscious. How long do we have before the insects find that entrance? For the sake of completeness, I suppose I should go through and list what facts we have to work from: 1) We know that Arthur is fully committed to finding a solution to the problem of Scratch by stopping Scratch entirely. 2) By John's own admission, he would have preferred to rid themselves of the issue of Scratch and the stone at the first opportunity, and he doesn't (or didn't) care about stopping Scratch. 3) John has admitted to trying to kill Oscar and now claims that he means to help Arthur save Oscar after Arthur has called him out on his murderous impulse. 4) We can clearly hear the rain coming down heavily. 5) The bestiary is in the car, and Oscar previously expressed concern about getting it wet in the rain. 6) Although we know the book contains information about "Forgotten Ones", and there is very good reasons to believe that Oscar knew what to do about the insect that infected his arm because of the book, it is not confirmed that the book has more information about the former than Oscar already told us, or any information about the latter. 7) The current working theory discussed by Arthur and John themselves (not confirmed) is that the insects have all been lured upstairs by the prospect of prey in the barricaded room, and that the basement should be clear of them for the time being. 8) The barricaded room is no longer entirely sealed, because there is now a hole in the roof leading into that room. (Although whether this is relevant or not could be debated.) 9) The original thing that Arthur wanted to look for in the basement were research notes from Mr. Allan to confirm the identity of the entity that he was attempting to summon, and how he went about doing it. 10) Oscar's arm became animate after being severed and began heading to an unknown location. My other lesser arguments: Given that the barricaded room may not be as safe as it once was, should the insects have the ability to access the outside of the building, we may be on a tighter time limit than just solving the Scratch problem before Arthur falls asleep, or before Oscar bleeds out. We may also be racing against the insects finding the hole in the roof and finishing Oscar off. Additionally, I have a terrible paranoia that attempting to read the book will result in it getting wet and being ruined, or just not being particularly useful. Furthermore, I think the book will be most useful to us after we get confirmation from the basement about what it was Mr. Allan was up to, and what entity he was attempting to summon, so we know what variety of Forgotten One we're dealing with.

Nicky

The vote for now is “Get the book” rather than “Read the book” I’m not sure if we’ll have a chance to get back to the car to get the book after going to the basement

Liz

A fair point. Even so, I'm still very suspicious of delays, and of being baited by the prospect of lore.

Scottie

I need to know what horrors lurk in the basement!

Teakettle

I am voting against all I believe in by voting against lore, but : A) I genuinely think we're on a time crunch and B) We don't need to wonder if John is still being shifty, we know full well he is.

Isi

Narratively, it flows best to heed John on this one. I've voted against all his ideas recently because his goals haven't aligned with Arthur's or mine (which has been the right call I might add), but this was a powerful moment in their relationship that cleared enough tension that I'm willing to believe him at this junction. Hell, even if he does think he can get away with deception after that conversation that would be some tasty betrayal and I'm still all for it. We also had our chance to enter the basement without wasting time and we blew that. Any advantage we had previously from Oscar's time reading will be lost if we go in now without checking further on what he's already told us. With Oscar out of commission we should be smart and find out all we can ourselves.

Flamia

Book. Understand what you're up against, THEN go against it. I've flip-flopped on trusting John, and knowing he was aiming to kill Oscar was a gutpunch, but he's right on this one, and I want to give him the benefit of doubt after he shaped up a little and told the truth.

vetchtibble

The book hasn’t really helped in the past, and the time it would take to get it AND look through it isn’t worth it

Jess

One of the first things John did to try to get control of Arthur was to tell him to pick up a book, saying that it had important info. It did not. John was just getting Arthur to do one small thing for him in order to establish a relationship where Arthur did what he was told. Now, we have John realizing that Arthur isn't going to follow his directions anymore and the first thing he does is to send Arthur for a book, and one that Oscar already read. I'm worried that this is John trying to recover control by pulling the same trick he did at the beginning.

Jeanette

no reading, basement only!

Phoebe

Agreed. It feels like the right thing to do, especially after John admitted that a lot of this stems from feeling isolated and ignored.
