Hello All!

Holy death cam, that was a brutal one! RIP the medic guys - GoT's style death right there. This show will be keeping me on my toes wont it?! I thought Fringe would be the difficult show to follow along with but this one is proving the most difficult. I will have to embrace the puzzle pieces and do my best at completing the picture - it's a marathon not a sprint guys haha. These eps always seem to fly by so I'm gonna take that as a good sign. Bring on the next one!

Much love

Dakara x

Hi Dakara - I love that you read our comments and interact. You should find that things will gel from now on. As you say, most of us have the advantage of having seen the full season, plus we didn't have the added stress of having to provide interesting commentary when we were confused first timers. You're doing great. The Captain of the Donnager is Theresa Yao - the woman who said she was going to scuttle the ship. On the ocean that means to sink a ship - in space it means blow it up, which she did to prevent the invaders getting control of it. LT Lopez, the Martian who ended up on the escape ship with Holden, is an intelligence officer. The boss of the shipyard on Tycho Station, where the Mormons' ship is being built, is Fred Johnson (played by Chad Coleman, who you might know as Tyreese from The Walking Dead). Holden kicked Naomi away in order to push himself onto the deck where he could engage his gravity boots and then reel her in. It's an example of how realistically gravity is used in this series. PLEASE keep on watching - I know a lot of us are really enjoying your reactions.

Isak Haugerud

You're supposed to feel a bit lost at this point, as we only have bits of the full puzzle. Don't worry about providing super insightful commentary or predictions. I think we're all just here to experience the show again through someone else's eyes. You're doing great!

PaulC

Did we lose a bit of the episode in the edit? I missed the scene right after Shed loses his head where they plug the holes in the room. Don't worry too much about not getting everything, at this point the main characters still don't know what's going on but it will all come together eventually! The guy on the station with the Mormons is Fred Johnson, he was just keeping tabs on the Donnager but didn't have anything to do with it blowing up, the ship was self destructed (scuttled) by the captain. I've often heard the show described as "Game of Thrones in space" which might give you an idea what you're in for!

DakaraJayne

Yup, a little bit. I installed a plug in on obs that is supposed to clip the last minute of a recording but it ended up stopping the recording so the second I saw i hit record again. I did obviously see those parts but sadly didn't get the edit.

PaulC

I hope you were suitably grossed out by the blood splatter when the gravity came back on? 😄

Donald Mellen

One caveat: Mag boots. Not gravity boots. ;)

Mike Watkins

Thanks for the video, I haven't said anything yet, but I'm very glad to see you doing The Expanse. It's absolutely fantastic. As for the scene where Holden kicks Naomi and you didn't know why, the explanation is that the ship's thrusters were shut off and because that meant the ship was no longer accelerating, they lost gravity. So they both started floating away from the platform. So Holden kicked Naomi in order to propel himself back to the platform where he then activated his mag boots. It was a quite realistic scene and Expanse does a lot of stuff like that throughout the series. The show pays a lot of attention to detail in terms of what to expect if these events were actually happening in space with little to no gravity.

Polly

Yeah - Mike Watkins above explained that scene better than I could.

hey, i kinda see a show as a map, too! i never really thought about it like that but my own visualization definitely fits lol. yeah, this map isn't just massive, it's in 4D with an X, Y, and Z axis. it DOES click, i promise lmao hey, surprise second comment! your usual quickness as recognizing actors was why it surprised me. i'm putting it down to being overwhelmed with characters on both this AND fringe

Robert

The ship is the Donneger. You were right there. It was a well designed warship, and should've been more than a match for the unknowns that came at them. We saw that the unknowns surprised them at every turn. The Donneger crew could not identify the hostiles, but now we know that the terrorists could never get such advanced equipment. Not sure why that one guy wanted to get a view of that sector. The ship would have been gone by that time, or he may have seen a remnant of the end. Whoever is behind this seems pretty keen on staying hidden though. Millers investigation seems to be leading him somewhere, where it's taking him is the question though. Love this kind of puzzle, lots of questions with no answers for them, yet!

PongPong31

I haven't watched the reaction yet, but I just wanna give a shoutout to everyone else watching and commenting on these reactions. The Expanse community has always felt like an extended family. Always understanding and always giving. Really looking forward to experiencing this with all of you! You're in safe hands Dakara.

PongPong31

Oh dear...Dakara's noticed Amos' arms. I've seen that look early in a show before, with a certain police captain on Grimm.

Ian

Don't worry dak you're not alone feeling a little lost early in the show , everything will become clear in time I promise 👍 . The medic just didn't have the head for space travel it seems . I would say not a good time to lose one's head but in this case it probably saved everyone's life because of the lack of air . The names yes you're get them in no time this is easy compared to the names in the last kingdom holy moly the names are bonkers lol . Really enjoyed this dak the show kicks into gear here on our 🔥

Jack

That's tragic, because while that's obviously not the most fun scene to watch, it is the most fun scene to watch people's reactions to!

Jack

We don't know exactly how far Fred Johnson on Tycho Station is from the Donnager battle, but they are both in the Belt (literally, in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter) so it's very possible that they are close enough for the light delay to only be a minute or two at most.

PaulC

Could have been a lot worse!

Jack

In case it helps, here's a spoiler-free summary of some of the key names we've been introduced to: People - Josephus ("Joe") Miller - the detective on Ceres Station, who works for Star Helix Security, and is trying to track down Julie Mao. He's a belter, but working for an Earth corp. His partner, who got a steel bar through the torso, is called Havelock. - James ("Jim") Holden - one of the survivors of the Canterbury, he is nominally in charge since he outranked the rest of the survivors on the Canterbury, for what that's worth. He's an earther, but hasn't been back to Earth for 12 years. - Alex Kamal - another survivor from the Cant, he is a martian and formerly was a transport pilot in the martian navy. - Naomi Nagata - the female survivor from the Cant, she is a belter. We find out from the martians that she is very clever and a highly qualified engineer. They also accuse her of being "OPA" (a prominent belter terrorist/political faction). - Amos Burton - the last survivor of the Cant, and a very well-built earther. We don't know a lot about him, except that he's incredibly loyal to Naomi, a capable mechanic, and happy to kill on command. - Julie Mao - the person Joe Miller is searching for, she is an heiress from a major Earth corp, but we see her estranged from her father and mixed up in the underworld on Ceres Station. - Chrisjen Avasarala - the UN official who was torturing a belter in the first episode, and outmaneuvered Mars (and her friend) to get them to reveal both the existence of their secret research labs and the fact that they weren't responsible for the destruction of the Cant. - Anderson Dawes - an underworld OPA leader, the guy who Miller met with to ask about Julie Mao. - Fred Johnson - the man who the Mormons were saying should be removed from their shipbuilding project because of his links to the OPA, until he outmaneuvered them and threatened to build their ship badly! We don't know much about him, except that he was interested in turning his "scopes" towards the Donnager battle. Ships: - Canterbury ("Cant") - the ship which was destroyed in the first episode, an ice-hauler which took ice from asteroids to be used as water in belter stations. - Donnager - the Martian Navy's flagship, a huge battleship and the most powerful ship in the solar system; recently destroyed. - Scopuli - the ship which was used to lure the Canterbury into a trap. Also the ship which Miller discovered that Julie Mao left Ceres Station on. Locations: - Ceres Station - where Joe Miller works, where Julie Mao was last seen, where we see riots after the destruction of the Cant, etc. - this is a very large asteroid in the Belt which essentially has been turned into a space port. - Tycho Station - this hasn't been named yet, but just so you're aware this is where Fred Johnson is located. It's a floating space station and shipyard, currently building a ship for the Mormons. - Earth - obviously all the UN stuff is happening on Earth.

PaulC

I don't think it was in the dialogue, but Tycho and the Nauvoo (the Mormons ship) were named on screen.

PongPong31

You're a good man, Jack.

Brian Dworak

Reread my comment on episode one; there is so much thrown at you very quickly: names, factions, politics, etcetera, that you should really keep a notebook next to you to jot everything down as it can get quite frustrating. You know what else is frustrating? Your computer no longer recognizing your speakers so you have to use your phone for the sound. You know how hard it is to hit "play" on your computer screen and your phone at the same exact second? 2024 has not been my friend. But seriously, it's a fun and captivating ride. I'm glad you chose to move forward with this series. Thanks Dak!

Mycatisajoker

After I watched like the first four seasons I went back and watched season one after a few years and totally forgot about the medic character as one of the survivors of the Canterbury. A lot of characters are introduced but not all are integral to the long-term story. I thought a few people, namely Jack and a few others, have really helped name the essential ones.

Valcor

You are pretty much meant to be lost at this point in the storyline. Like you said the viewer is only being given breadcrumbs. Also the reason Holden kicked Naomi was to give himself backwards momentum so he could activate his mag boots to the floor. That's why he attached himself to her first because otherwise she would have floated off.

Bless the Girl Kissers

Lopez said the thing about wishing he could have seen an ocean on Mars to Holden at the end, because he knew that with his injuries from being blown up, telling Alex to go full burn was going to kill him. RIP buddy
