Merry Christmas Dak! This is a great surprise, much appreciated!

Merry Christmas all - what a nice surprise to see an Expanse upload! I love how when the warning at the beginning of the episode says 'foul language' you know you're going to see Avasarala. Great outtro and interesting comments about Miller and Amos. Amos was interested in what was done to Cortázar's brain because he believes that his ability to feel empathy is also disabled and he wants to know if that can be reversed.

This was a nice surprise, I wasn't expecting The Expanse to return until next week. Less action in this episode than the previous one, but I think that's a good thing. Instead we got to see a lot more character development. Miller seems to have embraced his identity as a belter. He spent most of his life rejecting it. He worked as a cop for an Earth corp, being "the boot" as he said in the season 1 finale. Helping earthers keep his own people down, and even dressing like an earther. Now though, after what happened to Julie and the people on Eros, he's finally a true beltalowda :) We also got to see a lot more from Amos. It was heartbreaking when he asked about the empathy procedure being reversible. I also took it as him asking for himself, like Polly commented. He knows his moral compass doesn't point north like Holden or Naomi's do, and maybe thinks he doesn't even have empathy. I think he definitely has though, or he wouldn't be able to read people as easily as he does. He's a complex character for sure. You asked where Miller and the mormon guy were. I think that was a sort of waiting room/reception area for the Nauvoo, the ship they're talking about. It's that gigantic cylindrical thing that's attached to Tycho station. It's actually much bigger than the station itself, 2km long and half a km wide like the mormon guy said. And at the end of the episode Miller said he wants to use it to take out Eros? 🤯

You don’t have to have empathy yourself to be able to read people. That’s just observation. Amos probably has cognitive empathy, so he understands why and how people react the way they do, even if he can’t do the same because he lacks those feelings. It’s a survival skill.

Isak Haugerud

I think he is capable of emotional empathy as well, but only for certain people, like the little girl in the tunnels on Eros.

It’s interesting that we start to see Amos’s feelings towards Holden really shift this episode. He cleans out Millers room because Holden told him to. He spends all his free time with Holden, while Alex is flight aiming and Naomi is bonding with Drummer. When he gets the info from Cortazar, he goes straight to Holden. (Very telling that he relates getting him to talk to getting paedos to talk, given we know he grew up in brothels) He also tells Miller that Holden is the most righteous person out there, where previously that would have been Naomi. I LOVE Drummer fangirling over how badass the Roci is. Shes so happy this episode.

Surprised by the upload. I hope you had a vey enjoyable time with your family. Everything is starting to come to a head. People are choosing sides, and trying to find out where they all fit in whatever is happening. It's going to be very intersting to see what happens next.

Excellent reaction! My read has always been that Amos struggles with detachment and finding his empathy himself (from his background he's very close to sociopathic / psychopathic) and so he realised that he could relate, in a way, to find the triggers which the others would never see (using his flavour of neuro-spicy) to get the scientist talking. The way he just walked away when the scientist was begging for more info demonstrated how he had detached himself for the purpose of "solving the problem". Whether he can really feel empathy or just "understand it" remains to be seen...
