Glad you enjoyed it. Definitely one of the best episodes of the entire series. Probably top 3. One of my other favourites is coming up soon. Happy Boxing Day!

YESSS! We have finally reached this episode! Quite a lot of answers in this one; on top of this, we get to see Carla (Walter's lab assistant), and, more importantly, we get to meet Peter's mother...

The funeral scene: Walter and the 3 women in his life - a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead...

In answer to your question: I’d venture that most of us felt like this. I, as a thirty-something “manly man”, shed far more than a few tears for this show. You should never be embarrassed; it’s human, and it’s why we tell these stories. And yes, this show is severely underrated. As I recall, there were some network issues with this show, as far as scheduling. Remember, that this is not just the same network that ruined Firefly, but the EXACT same executives. They gave the show more of a pass because it’s from the same people as LOST, and one of the highest-grossing films of all time. As an aside though, they did do some cool things to promote this show. The Observer showed up at multiple sporting events (and other major television events that FOX carried)- including the Super Bowl, if I remember correctly. People who didn’t watch the show were very confused by this weird bald guy in a 1950s style suit, who showed no emotions, that would appear on their TV screen every now and then.

Three little clarifications: (1) Walter’s lab assistant, Carla Warren, is the same one that Walter killed in a fire due to his negligence. By that point, Walter was already starting to loose his mind (which we now know was at least in part due to Bell removing parts of his brain), and they judged that he wasn’t fit to stand trial for manslaughter. So they sent him to Saint Claire’s until he got better, and was fit to stand trial. But he never got better, because he never could. Presumably, the prosecution dropped the case a long time ago. (2) Nina lied to Olivia about how she lost her arm, as she does everyone else, because she can’t exactly tell people she lost it when some guy named Walter Bishop punched a hole in the universe. (3) Yes, what Walter did was extremely messed up. He could have been honest, but he didn’t want to have to explain, so he lied, and stole Peter from his parents, who loved him just as much. He knew exactly what to say to manipulate Elizabeth (who, despite what Walter has said in the past, seemed to be a wonderful person at this point). Peter saw right through him, though.

Not exactly a Xmas episode, tho unlike us at least they have snow lol It's probably *the* episode that immediately comes to my mind when this show is mentioned. It's just a beautiful piece of television. It's interesting how Walter's Peter was clearly closer to him while our Peter was closer to his mum. You gotta wonder how much of that original dynamic just transferred into their relationship. That feeling of something not being right turning into resentment the older Peter was getting. I genuinely think Walter placed some of the blame onto Elizabeth because he's an unreliable narrator here and it's easier to share the burden of such a decision. But the worst part of it is how he wasted the chance he created for himself as a father. He was absent and probably emotionally neglectful which I wouldn't be surprised was a byproduct of his guilt. And I know it's only been mentioned once in S1 but I've always wondered if Walter experimenting on Peter was because of his origins. It's extra messed up to imagine him being scientifically curious to such extent. I think he said he was collecting data which could fit that idea. That's just so wrong. "There's only room for one god in this lab, and it's not yours" is my favourite quote from this show. What a terrific line!

DB

Oh and adding to the reassuring comments - I'm a child free middle aged woman and this one made me cry back then and still makes me cry.

Katie

Made me cry when I was child-free and makes me cry just as much if not more now I have a child. Could also be an age thing. The older I get, the more emotional I am

DB

Rewatching it now I genuinely think it was ahead of its time and in the end it was the reason it never took off as much as it should. It's so odd to think it was constantly in danger of cancellation. Especially since it had built-in fan bases (Lost fans tuning in for JJ Abrams, Dawson's Creek fans tuning in for Josh Jackson and LotR fans tuning in for John Noble. Or variations of all 3). Although tbf judging by e.g. Netflix cancellations of objectively interesting projects in favour of renewal of reality tv and other media equivalent of fast food, not much has changed. Networks want cheap and fast. So many shows that are considered classics/tv changing projects wouldn't be given a chance nowadays. Sorry, I hijacked your comment for a rant lol

Will Sofer

DB, you didn’t hijack my comment at all! I was hoping for some more perspectives. Maybe even a little disagreement. And I agree. While the multiverse had been done before (it was still a really new concept on TV), we had shows like “Sliders”. Interesting? Sure. But nowhere near the depth of storytelling as this. I’m a bit amazed at how they tied this all together; season one seemed a bit ad-hoc, but they definitely had a full idea of the storyline by this point. I honestly think the only thing we had that was comparable in scope, as far as an “epic” storyline like this, were The X-Files, LOST, Buffy/Angel, and a few others. A story this intricate, that also told a very human story, was kind of a novelty at this point.

protip if you ever WERE to fall into frozen water for some reason: contrary to normal practice when submerged and looking to get out, aim for the DARK spot, not the light; the dark spot is where there's no ice refracting the light from the surface ergo, it's the way out. yeah, this episode man. like literally what can you even say? everything from the funny 80s title sequence (virtual reality? IVF? now that's crazy talk! lol) to the superb de-aging to the writing and acting to the answers received was TOP. NOTCH. a detail i really love is that while the original peter was closer to his father, the other peter (OUR peter) was always closer to his mother and it seems like walter was always trying to recreate the closeness he had with him on some level while peter himself still clearly aligned more with our elizabeth up until very recently. it's another subtle thing this episode put into perspective from previous ones. you're definitely not the only one to cry lol. whenever i come across scenes or stories like this, it always brings to mind, coincidentally, that beautiful scene with king theodon in lotr: "no parent should have to bury their child."

Cathy Gillies

I think it would be stranger not to cry at this episode. Absolutely one of my favourites. Plus I love the 80s opening credits!

Neumann

walter's line is great but i didn't watch this with captions the first time so when i heard carla's line, i thought she was saying "some things are not ours to tamper with, some things are gods", not "God's". like, i thought she was saying the forces of the universe were the gods and they were not to be trifled with. i thought THAT line went so hard lmao

DB

Omg I forgot about Sliders! I used to love that show. It definitely wasn't as deep as Fringe (iirc they were basically in a different universe every episode right? I don't remember if there was like a major arc through all the seasons). The saddest part that comes with shortening attention span of viewers and the need for instant storytelling is that we no longer allow the shows to build up. We expect a hook right from the start with networks rarely giving enough of space to grow. I've been rewatching Twin Peaks with another reactor I follow here and it just reminded me how much tv has changed. I dunno, it might be personal preferences but I like slow burn storytelling and lingering shots and giving me as a viewer something to dwell on for years to come. Easy entertainment is fun and it definitely has its place but don't treat your viewers like idiots that need to be spoon-fed everything. Ok, stopping now, I swear. I just have a lot of feelings on the current state of media and media literacy lol

“The boy is important, he has to live” If this line is not the linchpin of the entire show i don’t know what is, we don’t know its full significance yet but the picture is getting clearer and clearer as the show progresses and the revelations are just beginning. This episode imo remains to this day the best of the whole show or at least the most impactful and it’s a testament to the writing that it can stand the test of time so well because it wasn’t an easy feat, after all the build up they did so far and all of the hints they dropped to finally being able to see this pivotal event in the Fringe universe and the fact that every piece of information we had fit perfectly and we got a lot of new (like Nina’s arm) ones is amazing. There’s so much to talk about, like Carla Warren, Walter’s old lab assistant that so far we had only heard about through Walter and her mother in season 1 and that plays a pretty crucial part because she is the one that confronts him about the moral implications of what he is about to do and it’s so important that the show gaves us that scene to make us understand that Walter was fully conscious of the consequences of his actions and he willingly chose to trade one life for the entire universe, and on one hand that makes him a much darker character than we thought and in another sense an even more tragic one. “There’s room for only one god in this lab and it’s not yours”. God that line always gives me goosebumps and it perfectly encapsulates the character of Walter (and Belly) in this time period, they viewed themselves as scientific gods and i love how aggressive Walter gets once Carla throws Oppenheimer’s words in his face. Another major character that finally gets introduced is Elizabeth and that actress just breaks my heart in this episode, that look that she gives at the end is so layered because she (much like Walter) knows that keeping this Peter is wrong bet she is also a mother grieving and “her” son has been “magically” returned to her and she is not gonna let him go every again, what a wonderful actress she is. There is going to be time to talk about Nina in the future but we got a lot more on her in this episode, her close relationship with Peter was hinted at in 1x06 where Peter goes to her to ask for a favor and she tells him that they used to spend a lot of time together when he was child but he obviously can’t remember because it wasn’t him, the arm reveal was a great twist. My favourite piece of Fringe music is from this episode, the track is called “Raiden out to madness” and it plays when Walter is crossing over to other side and it’s so good because it makes you really feel like this moment is the moment where everything went wrong for both Walter and the world a whole, like Walter said “it was the first crack” and i think this track really reflects that. Okay i’ve gotta close this off or this comment will never end so i’ll go into some of the cool detail in this episode because there are a lot. 1. Yes the coin that Peter plays with is the one we saw in season 1, in this universe it was Walter that taught Peter the coin trick while in the other it was Elizabeth, it’s probably a hint that our Peter was closer to his mom in that universe. 2. the coin trick is also the thing that triggers Walter’s memory in season 1 when he is trying to remember what he hid in his security boxes that Jones is trying to steal (which btw contain a version of the device that Walter uses in this ep) and it’s the first time we hear of Peter’s illness but Walter lies and tells Peter that he magically started to heal by himself. 3. Walternate! We finally get to introduced to the iconic name that from now on will be used to talk about that version of Walter. 4. The scene where August and the other observer are coming out of the movie theater on the other side (we know this because the zeppelin is in the sky) you can see that they went to watch Back to the Future but in that universe the main actor is not Michael J. Fox but Eric Stoltz which was supposed to play the character in real life too before leaving the role to Fox. There are a lot more but i’m sure others will point them out in the comments. P.S. Please never feel like getting emotional about this show is weird or out of proportion because it’s very normal especially about this episode, i would go so far as to say that if someone gets to this episode and they feel nothing at all they should probably drop the show and i don’t want to make it seem like i’m gatekeeping or anything similar but i truly believe that if this episode doesn’t resonates with you in any way that means it’s probably not the show for you just because like i mentioned in the beginning this one is the emotional core of the whole show. Anyway i loved your reaction and your discussion as usual and i can’t wait to delve into the the final section of this season, it’s about to get even crazier!

"There's only room for one God in this lab, and it's not yours." Might just be the most frightening quote from Walter. O.G. Walter could be a motherfucker. One of my favorite things about this spectacular show is that in the face of all the science fiction and monster-of-the-week shenanigans, the greatest monster in this world is simply a man who loves his son. Love, in fact--I think--is the most important theme of Fringe. And we are just getting started...

Michael R

You are not alone. I cried my eyes out during this episode and I am not an emotional guy. But this show does such a good job of making us feel for the characters. When Peter died I felt for Peter, I felt for Walter, I felt for Elizabeth. I felt for Olivia who was caught in the middle of this mess. As for why Fringe wasn't a huge hit, I could write a dissertation on why it wasn't, there are many factors. I'm just happy YOU like it Dakara.

FedeM

This quote just gives me chills when I think of the episode coming after the next one

FedeM

Walter's lab assistant is the embodiment of the consequences to his actions. It makes SO much sense that she's the one to confront Walter. Walter's relationship with God may be my FAVORITE little subplot in Fringe. But I can't really talk too much about it yet except by praising the quote everyone else already cited "there's only room for one god in this lab, and it's not yours" Loved the reaction, and cannot wait for next week already!

PaulC

I get that the alternate universe needs some visual cues to distinguish it from the main one, but for a world with advanced technology it seems odd that they would still be using 1930s airships. I do like the 1980s style opening and theme in this episode.

RemovalOfMasks

Love this episode! Your reaction is just priceless ❤️ I'm such a mess every time this hits the screen and I agree, it would have half the impact if I didn't have a kid (but half the impact would still be powerful!!)

PaulReacts

It was well established even at this point that they are more technologically advance only in some aspects. Even Walter said it on multiple occasions. In other areas we are the advanced ones.

PaulC

Perhaps I missed something in the dialogue but I wouldn't say it was "well" established. Either way, the use of airships still makes little sense to me.

TyphlosionGang

I could have always misinterpreted this but my understand is that the observer did not see any exceptional quality in Peter. My understanding is that the Observer inadvertently distracted Walternate, meaning the Observer 'caused' alternate Peter's death. THAT is what made Peter special, it isn't that he was special before that. Because the Observer had caused Walternate to not see the cure, he had to 'fix' the error he created by saving Peters life, to restore balance. If he did not get seen, Peter would've been saved by Walternate... he stopped that, so he had to fix it.

Around 41 minutes you asked us if we were like you were when we watched this episode. I was a blubbering sobbing mess. I couldn't stop crying. This was the best episode I had ever seen at this point of this show. I'm pretty sure this is what made me put this show at the top of my list of favorites. The writers are top-notch. Incredible show and episode. I'm a mother too so I think it makes it 10 times more emotional. But even without children it's a phenomenal episode.
