Oh god, THIS episode. I despise this episode. I think it's the worst thing Fringe ever did, and not surprisingly, it's Fox's fault. Glee was new and popular at the time, so the network pushed other shows to do musical episodes during April/May sweeps. And this was billed as a musical episode, so a lot of us who had, for example, watched Buffy, were expecting Fringe's take on Once More, With Feeling, which it very much was NOT, so it was kind of a huge letdown. I disliked that there were no songs composed FOR the episode, that it just used existing music and a lot of it was just played in the background, and that when the cast members DID sing, it felt very shoehorned in. Apparently the overall storyline was already in the works without the musical element, but then because of Fox's shenanigans, they forced it in where it didn't really fit otherwise. On the flip side, it can only get better from here, right?

DB

Oh thank godssss for this comment! I remember some fans adoring this one and I thought I was the odd one thinking it was just cringe lol Tho tbf I hated Glee and OMWF is pretty much the only musical episode of tv that I think works. The only saving grace here is the aesthetic. But then again, you get a bunch of attractive people and style them beautifully - it's not exactly a surprising outcome lol

Katie

I'm not a fan of this episode either. I skip it every time. There are certainly worse musical episodes in other franchises but I just don't think it advances the story. Love the next episode though! I also agree that it definitely gets better and better from here

A lot of series tend to have a 'wacky' episode or two, and they tend to be so called hit-or-miss episodes. As far as I am aware, for most Fringe fans this episode was more 'miss' than 'hit'...

It always astounds me that people can't enjoy a series making a little fun off the wall episode. I always found this enjoyable when rewatching this show.

I absolutely love this episode. I’m so surprised to find out a lot of fans hate it, but I guess people don’t like things being different, even if they are cool. IMHO this ep is a brilliant look into everyone’s emotional state at this time without just having a boring “and then they look for Peter” episode. This one is so spot on thematically and emotionally, it’s weird and silly, it’s brilliant! I mean it is definitely NOT a musical, and I can def see why people would have been annoyed if they expected one. But I guess watching the art separate from whatever marketing was happening at the time allowed me to actually appreciate what they made.

i feel like the hate might come from the initial premier where i imagine it was a bit jarring, and maybe disappointing, to have this smack dab in the middle of such intense, plot heavy episodes. because you're right, it has all the appearance of a sharp swerve into fluff while really being a great insight into the emotional states of everyone, that may have just gone over many viewers' heads. it's not my favorite episode by any means but it's a fun way to check in, like you said

Katie

I think for me the issue is where the episode was placed right after the big reveal we'd been waiting for since the season 1 finale. I watched the show when it was first on TV so I think those feelings never left me. If the episode was placed earlier on in the season when things weren't so high stakes I think it would have been a much more enjoyable episode

Neumann

i hear that, but the problem with that is that we wouldn't NEED that check in earlier in the season lol. if it were earlier, it would be an entirely different episode with a different plot. it really is a bit of a rock and a hard place; you either take a risk and make a unique if jarring episode to tell us how the characters are coping, or you make a by-the-books "everyone is sad and looking for peter" episode which MIGHT keep up the tension, but also might just be a bit boring and lose the tension because it was stretched a bit too long, ya know? i'm not dismissing your feelings on the matter, i'm just saying I'M glad fringe took a very fringe approach to the matter even if it ended up a bit jarring lol

DB

I think for me it's because it's not even a musical episode? It feels a bit halfway and IMO for a musical episode to work you have to go all in. You have to commit. And they only did it kind of, not really. So if Fox was telling them "Glee is a major hit, do a musical" they should've gone full on musical. Write your own songs, make it even kookier, make everybody sing and dance. The way they did it feels reluctant to me and if it's halfhearted to the creative team, how am I supposed to immerse as a viewer? I've had the exact same issue with SPN "musical" episode. It lacked full commitment to the format despite the show itself having plausible setting for unexpected madness. Tho I admit I'm biased because I think OMWF set the bar too high for tv musical episodes.

Katie

Ok, so I normally skip this episode on a rewatch but as you were watching it I thought I'd give it another shot. I'll start with the positive take aways. Everyone looks amazing. I love the costumes and make up and Gene in her Mr Blobby phase is great 😁 The message of the story is really sweet and it's just a bit of silly fun. Also, Ella is just adorable. On to the not so positives. Musicals are one of my favourite genres so I would have liked it if they'd gone full-blown musical numbers or instead not added singing at all. It felt like all the songs were unfinished and shoehorned in. I wouldn't really say there is anything important to the overall storyline in this episode and that's why I skip it. Maybe just that last minute of the episode is worth watching the episode for. But it was definitely entertaining to watch it again this time round. P.s Thanks for choosing my earlier comment to read out. Fringe is my favourite TV show. I think it just gets better and better, with season 5 being my favourite. Can't wait for you to react to future episodes but at the same time it will be sad when it's all over

As usual this episode brings out a plethora of reaction in the community every time someone reacts to it, it’s seems to be very polarizing, people either love it or despise it and i feel like their opinion on it heavily depends on whether they watched it live while the show was airing or years later on a binge. I tend to fall more towards the middle, i do think that the musical element is not well utilized and should have either been removed completely or done with much more creativity, (it was probably something imposed or at least heavily suggest by the network like others have suggested). On the other end everything that is not musical i think is actually pretty great, i like the story, the costumes, the lighting etc. and i think it offers a great insight into Walter’s mind (even though he is high as a kite) since he is the one telling the story, it’s especially interesting the way he sees himself within the narrative, a brilliant scientist with a streak of broken children behind, it tells a lot about his state of mind just like his original ending for the tale does. This is clearly a filler episode done to hit the season quota but i do think it has some value and insight into the characters and that makes it imo worth exploring and it also adds a little bit of tension in terms of Peter’s return because it’s the first time that he is not in an episode since the show started and it makes you doubt if he will come back at all. P.S. Also the Polivia scenes are always great, no matter the context they are put in their chemistry always shines through.

So, I watched the episode again, just to compile the list below: On top of the obvious parallel (Peter stealing Walter's heart, which transforms into Peter being prepared to give Walter his heart), we have SO MANY call-backs: "... a gambler, a guy named Big Eddie..." "Question is, what DON'T they do?" [Massive Dynamic] "Ms Dunham, you should proceed with caution" "I [we] never meant for her [for you] to be harmed" "We call them the Watchers [Observers]" "You should know what you are getting into, Ms Dunham" Window into alt universe "No Signal" The pattern of pins on the map "steals children's dreams and replaces them with NIGHTMARES" [remember Jacksonville] "not responsible for all the goodness [evil] in the world, but he is responsible for so much ..." Beacon coming through, Observers tracking it Special Observers' guns "You're gonna be fine" "What made you wanna be a detective?" "You did it!"

Yes that was Lance Reddick singing and playing the piano...Great song by the way...Low Spark of the High Heeled Boys, by : Traffic.

how dare you, "fanfiction" was a work of art! lmao no but seriously, i loved the way spn did a musical ep; the humor, the (original!) songs, the fact that the fandom was finally portrayed accurately as mostly female and not dorky guys and the occasional unstable woman, the lullaby version of carry on, and the way that the boys were actually moved by it all in the end and stopped being dismissive of their inadvertent impact on fans. and omg the girl giving dean back a version of the samulet! chuck/the writers showing up at the end to give his blessing at the end! imo if a show does a musical episode, it shouldn't be copy and paste from other shows' versions (and definitely not just a buffy copy), it should match the tone and characters of their own show and this matched spn perfectly. as similar in subject matter as buffy and spn may be, they're very different shows and their musicals needed to reflect that

Michele

Every show has to have a singing episode. But why was Peter the only one who didn't sing?

Thadman

Whenever that happens, I just assume the actor can't sing very well. So, I assumed that Joshua Jackson is not a strong singer and maybe can't carry a tune.

Thadman

I fall on the side of really liking this episode. I don't care for musical episodes, so I was so grateful they didn't do full songs (nor dance routines) and only used excerpts to emphasize an emotional point. To me, the amount used of music was just enough because it was minimal. If you like musicals, I can get why this might disappoint you. I actually remember really enjoying Anna Torv's slow and low version of that song "For Once In My Life." It fit the situation because it was more melancholy than the original version which is upbeat. But, over all, I liked how they summed up the emotional beats of the current situation so that a child could understand it and they did it in a fun sort of retro-futuristic world. I remember my friend and I watching it and talking about how it looked all 40s noir, but they had cell phones and other modern tech, they just looked like if that tech existed back then. Over all, I love when TV shows step outside of their genre and do a different style, usually done like this by telling a story or seeing a dream. It's fun and show's that they can have fun with themselves in a meta sort of way. That being said, I'm in the minority with not caring for musical episodes. I'm the only person I know that was uncomfortable all through the Buffy episode, "Once More With Feeling," and breathed a sigh of relief when it was over. I was also happy when Joss basically said, "Yeah, we're never doing that again." I think it was because it was a lot of extra work for one episode, not because it was not well-received 'cause I'm pretty sure it was.
