Hello All!

GUYS! This show is a bit of me I just know it!!! I have my doubts about how well the reactions would do but I don't doubt that I would be invested (sounds silly off one episode but there's just a vibe). Let me know your thoughts please, it'll help a lot! I love the chemistry between the leads already AND the concept of the show in general too. The nostalgia is strong with the fashion, tech and quality. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Much love

Dakara x

Oh man! The greatest hits just keep on coming. I have no doubt that you're going to absolutely adore everything about this show and looks like you don't either. The X-Files has heavily inspired so many of the other shows you love. Fringe, Supernatural, Buffy, Bones. So it's no surprise that the mother of them all, would have you hooked from the start. You know me Dak, a big YES to reactions!

Katie

Oh wow! This is a nice surprise. I have been meaning to do a rewatch for a long time but just never got around to it. I dipped in and out of this show when it was originally on TV so my memory is kind of foggy about everything that happens. Looking forward to watching this reaction

Bronco 1701

Loved this show when is was first on. would love it if you do the full series. its a yes from me.

Neumann

damn, you're really on a sci-fi kick between the expanse, fringe, and this lol

Michelle Denny

Yes!!!! I guess I will forever be a Patreon here cause ya keep reacting to some great shows lol

Michele

I'm glad you're doing this one. I figured you'd like it. X-Files used to be my favorite show and Mulder my favorite character. Until SPN came along. I've seen this series through so many times, it's crazy. It's the first show I ever bought all the VHS tapes for - yes, VHS. I also loved reading the books done around the series. This was before I had reliable internet, so I was never able to get into the fandom and check the stuff that was online. But there was a lot of fan fiction for the show. Very similar to SPN in the way the fandom was about the show. The case of the week aspect is always something I liked about shows like this. Yes, I think a main, over-arching, story is needed, but the independent shorter stories are something I think is also needed. The characters and character chemistry is one of the best things about this show. I look forward to watching your reaction and will pump this up in line over catching up on your Fringe reactions. Been a busy year so far for me. ugh

El

Oh I would be all over this! I need more Scully and Mulder in my life. I know you've listened to some of Buffering the Vampire Slayer (I remember hearing you sing the Drusilla jingle in one of your reactions!) and after they finished Buffy, the started 'The eX-Files' (called that because they're exes), and they've just wrapped up season 2 of the show. One of the hosts and one of the producers has never seen it before, so it's mostly spoiler free (I say mostly because every now and then something minor slips in), so it might be a good companion piece to your reactions, or if you end up just watching the show on your own.

Shona

Would love you to react fully to this. There is one episode in season 1 which has one of the creepiest characters i have ever seen on tv. I will not spoil it it incase you do pick it up.

Michele

Shelley is a reactor who's been reacting to the X-Files. You could check out her youtube channel to see how it's doing for her.

This show was an obsession of mine back when it was airing, as I was in my teens when it premiered. I had no access to the internet at all until about 1998, and nobody I knew watched it, so it was a very different fannish experience than anything later. I had to scrounge through magazines at the local book shop for any little crumbs of behind the scenes or interviews. I might still have a few of those stashed away, I think... I promise, no spoilers, but here's some tidbits that don't spoil anything: About Gillian: she was only 24 when this started, even younger than the character could have been with her stated history (likely at least 28). You're right that there is something in her look that recalls Robin Tunney from The Craft. The network didn't want to cast her, because they wanted someone "sexier" for the role, if you can believe that. She was a complete unknown, while David Duchovny (pronounced doo-CUV-nee) had been in movies, such as Kalifornia with Brad Pitt. (If you haven't seen that, it's very effective, but VERY dark and uncomfortable viewing.) I'm guessing that's what the bathrobe scene was trying to serve - the male gaze, to inject some sexy into the show to court those men ages 18-49 that advertisers want. You might recognize the hospital where Peggy and Billy were patients. Those bits were filmed at Riverview Sanitarium in Vancouver, BC, which you've also seen at the beginning of season 2 of Fringe AND where they filmed SPN 1x10 Asylum and a few other bits in SPN. The red brick with white columns outside is a clue, as well as the grid of windows in the hallway inside. Since this was filmed in Vancouver, 3 years before Stargate SG-1 began, 12 years before SPN started, and 16 years before Fringe started shooting there, you can play "spot the Vancouver actor" while watching this! Don't know if you watched SG1 or SGA, but I've watched way too many things filmed in that area over the past 30 years. Can't believe it's been so long. I'm sorry to hear about your Dad passing, and that Fringe hasn't been the success you hoped. I know I haven't watched along as consistently as I'd planned, though I'm finally now in a place to rejoin that party - which I'm looking forward to. This show is very much of its time, and I'm sure you'll get a laugh out of the special effects if you continue. There's some really hilarious CG in one particular episode in the first third of s1, but some of the first movie CG was only about 4 years prior, in James Cameron's The Abyss, so it's cutting edge for TV in 1993! Sorry for the TL;DR comment, but I'm a bit excited about you possibly watching this.

Katie

You mentioned that Fringe isn't that popular on YouTube. I wonder if it's because it's not a very well-known show. I don't know a single person that's heard of it. Whereas I think everyone has heard of The X Files

Ian

Not something I'd wanna watch again but what's important is if it's something you really wanna react to then go for it , I'd probably watch the YouTube edits as I'm sure they would be great 👍

AC10

I haven't really thought about this show in well over a decade.... That said... This was a childhood pleasure of mine... Especially with my siblings... So.... If you do continue watching this... It's going to be So Much FUN!!! 😬

AC10

Holy crap... I don't have time to read this right now but I've bookmarked it to read later. My older sibling was obsessed with this when it aired on OTA tv.... And they got me hooked on the VHS recording years after it first aired. It's really a one of a kind show. Thanks for sharing.

AC10

"This was one of my dad's favorite shows".... OH GOD!!! I was not prepared for today to be a Feel Old kinda day....

Michael R

This was just amazing. Last time you did a poll I voted for Fringe and The X-Files so you know where my heart lies. Dakara I've probably seen this pilot 10 or 15 times in my life and it was a whole new experience watching it with you and seeing it through your eyes. Your analysis and thoughts on the characters and the show were very intriguing and yes I think you would love this show if you decide to proceed (just like your dad did). Hope you continue with it but I understand if you don't.

sothcweden

I need to retract that statement about the first CG being in the late 80s, and I should know better than to say things without checking my sources. I double-checked and The Abyss was merely the first water CGI. Shame on me. "Darkness Falls" was really good, and I'd imagine your connection to the area helps with bringing it to life in your imagination. There are a lot of very watchable eps in S01 along with some clunkers, just like almost any show finding its feet. And some plots that aren't great still have enough character moments to make me enjoy sitting through them. I don't want to mention my specific faves or favorite guest appearances, just in case Dakara decides to go forward, because spoilers. But, if she does, I'll definitely point them out.

DakaraJayne

My dad was young if that helps. I don't think I'm much younger than yaself

Eliphelet77

It's been a while since I was last subbed...I tend to come and go most of the time. Stayed through most of Buffy. Returned for Fringe. Now I see the xfiles. It's an excellent show and I'd be keen to follow along. It's very dated especially early on, but that almost adds something to the show for me rather than takes stuff away. I find xfiles particularly interesting as do many of the cases are at least inspired by "real world" cases and conspiracies. Occasionally it really can make you question things...particularly with the renewed UFO interest in news cycles...who knows! I'd be inclined to hang around for this show if you continue. It's a good'un.

Steve Mercier

This show was like my religion when it first aired. I've always seen Fringe as being clearly influenced by this show--but Fringe, in my opinion, has a much stronger through-line for its main story, and much deeper human connections. That said, what The X-Files gets right is the...you know what? Never-mind. Just watch. It's good shit.

Blunderbutts

This is a cracking show that I haven't seen for years - I'd be super happy if you carried this on because it gives me an excuse to watch it all again :D It's one of those long-running shows, which definitely worked back in the day when you could actually miss an episode, not so sure it'd fly on modern TV. Still love it to bits though.

BJ Stephens

It's funny you happen to react this this while you're also reacting to Fringe. I remember when I first watched Fringe I always thought it must have been at least partially inspired by the X-Files.

PongPong31

My mum adored the show as well. We used to watch when I was a kid as it first aired. My siblings too. Probably wasn't old enough to truly appreciate everything about the show. But a couple of scenes and episodes have turned into core memories for me. Subsequently ended up re-watching the entire run multiple times over the years though.

PongPong31

I agree. Gillian acted her socks off. Like a seasoned veteran. She was so young!

PongPong31

And I've never been able to say "Mulder" any other way than how she does it lol. After all these years.

Brian Dworak

Please, PLEASE react to the whole series! This is peak nostalgia for me. The first episode aired in September of 1993 and that was such a great time. The series aired on Friday evenings back then so I had to watch reruns, as I was managing a punk bar in Chicago (R.I.P. G-Spot) and my son had just turned 3 in August, so I was pretty busy. I haven't watched the series in a long time, but when they released the DVD season boxsets way back in the day, I bought them all as they came out. I loved your stories about your dad and his love of the series. I think it would be really great if you had a photo of your dad sitting next to you and facing the monitor; we don't need to see it if that would be weird, but him being next to you and us knowing that dad is watching again alongside his daughter would be so special. I just teared up... I love that you said "front room" as that's how most midwesterners say it, especially back in the day. People here in Tennessee would get a bit confused if I said it to them. I miss Chicago, but it's not the same anymore. And yes, I really like Gillian Anderson as well. The last series I saw her in was THE FALL (2013-2016). If you like British Detective Series' and haven't watched it, I'd suggest putting it on your "to watch" list. I think it would be great to upload to YT, as this is a classic and nostalgic series for many people and, as another commenter said, it's much more well known than FRINGE. I think these two series would be a fantastic pairing and I'll buy you a black 1967 Impala if you do (in my mind, of course). Thanks for another awesome reaction Dak, you'll always be the best. Now back to SUPERNATURAL season 7. Again. For the 4th time.

Polly

I very much enjoyed your reaction to this and would love it if you would continue. I loved The X-Files back in the day - not so much the ongoing story line but they had some very droll and/or thrilling MotW episodes. I thought that Scully's boxy outfits and pageboy haircut were SO cool heh - still appreciate their dressing her like a professional rather than a sexy lil thang. As far as I know recovered memory therapy has been completely discredited - it was misused by therapists through the 1990s to the 2010s and resulted in some serious miscarriages of justice. Thanks Dakara and here's to you getting enough of a response to keep going.

Josee (Griffe)

I never watched the show before and I must say it's not exactly what I anticipated. I've wanted to start watching it, since a couple of podcasters that I follow for Supernatural stuff are really into it. I think this show would grow on me with a couple more episodes. I would watch along at least for the first season if you decide to react to it. After that, if the views are not there, you could always stop reacting and just watch it on your own.

Neumann

yeah but mulder's whole main thing is aliens and ufos and that's the most famous image/poster/tagline, so i'll put it under sci-fi primarily lol

Joel139

It's incredible that you were finally able to react to the X-Files pilot, you don't know how long this will take, thank you Dakar hahaha. I loved your reaction and analysis. This is an incredible series, it was a sensation at the time and I saw that it is resurfacing again, as already mentioned in other comments this series inspired many others and there are direct references and "homages" in many series, in supernatural you mention it on several occasions and one episode even has the X-Files intro. Surely you are going to like this great series, I hope you decide to react to more episodes, like the sign in Mulder's office says "I want to believe." Greetings

Robert

Avid viewer of the X Files when it was first on, and I'll watch it when I can find it in syndication. I think that it would do well as something that your subscribers would like. The team of Mulder and Scully is legendary in comicon circles. I had a huge crush on Gillian Anderson BTW the actress from "The Craft" (I agree, it was a very good movie.) was Robin Tunney. The two do look a little alike at the time. Duchovny delivers on "Fox Mulder", I just wish his character hadn't been so eager to believe the fantastic. He's the sort who would hear hoofbeats and think wildebeest, or antelope (or unicorns?), anything other than horses. His total lack of skepticism, though, is what made the series interesting. He made the viewer think.

PeachyKeen

I really hope you continue with the show! I think you would love it. I had originally subbed to your Patreon for Buffy reactions and decided to take a look at your page randomly because I loved your reactions and found this! I immediately subbed again just to watch this pilot. This is one of my fave shows and even though it is totally 90s, that’s the beauty of it and a lot of the stories still hold up. It’s so iconic and as an SPN lover, it’s a must watch. Gillian is stunning and David is such a cutie. They have great chemistry right off the bat, it feels so natural for them to be working together. Much more to say but I do hope you bring this back eventually 👽🛸

Macca Fan

Does anybody know if she's going to continue with the XFILES?

DakaraJayne

I will be when a slot opens up. I may handle it differently though as I've been told there's a lot of filler episodes and this show would be a big commitment

PongPong31

I wouldn't really call them filler Dak. Monster of the Week as Rick says, is more like it. Scully and Mulder are what really keeps it going. They don't really drop in quality. :)

sothcweden

Woohoo! Will be interested to see how you decide to approach it. There are two distinct options I can think of, and at this point in time, I know which I'd suggest, but it would be somewhat spoilery to explain myself... I'm sure folks will engage with however you do it.

Brian Dworak

I think not reacting to the whole series would be a mistake and would disappoint those that love the show. As for filler episodes, SUPERNATURAL had over a hundred episodes more than this series, many of which were so-called filler episodes, but some of those are fan favorites. I get the overarching storyline view, but every step is on the path to that conclusion. I'll buy you many coffees, and you know I always follow through. Love ya Dak.

Leonardo

I asked Perplexity.ai "between all the episodes of all the seasons, plus the movies, how long would it take to watch "The X-Files" if one were to watch an hour per week?" The answer was: To watch every episode and both movies of "The X-Files" at a rate of one hour per week, it would take about 167 weeks (which is over 3 years), since the total runtime is about 167 hours (991 minutes for all 218 episodes, plus 121 minutes for "Fight the Future" and 104 minutes for "I Want to Believe"). That amounts to roughly 1171 days to complete your viewing.

Gabriela Popescu

Ugh they are one of the best duo ever EVER. I too think you’re going to love it, trust me these two are something special.

Wreath

Amazing reaction. That was on tv in 1993. Someone know that Cliff De Young (Dr. Jay Nemman) was in the movie Flight of the Navigator (1986)?

SORPunk

Long show, some dud episodes, but get really, really, really good. I mean, its classic TV for a reason. You only have 5 episodes up atm, but tbh, I dig this more than buffy.

Milton Reduxed

I signed up especially to watch along with The Files. Before the internet, having a show which delved into conspiracy was precious to us in the 90s. A genuine cultural phenomenon

DakaraJayne

Appreciate that Milton and i truly hope you enjoy 🥰 ill keep a look out for your thoughts along the way

chris allen

I love this show so much, I was 11 when the show started and it was the first show my parents let me stay up to watch, Gillian Anderson might have played a role in my attraction to redheads
