I think this is an underrated episode. I'm not sure I can write anything coherent so I'll just list things that I love: 1. The title. Northwest Passage was the original title for Twin Peaks and there are multiple nods to that show throughout the episode. (RIP David Lynch, you legend < / 3) 2. Martha Plimpton. I was gonna write down how I know her from so many things but once I started thinking I could only come up with The Goonies lol But it was my favourite childhood film so to me she's got legendary status forever. 3. Krista is me. She fancies Peter, Band of Horses and playlists lol 4. Peter being so lost and restless. Not being able to say for sure if he's hallucinating because of lack of sleep or if he's definitely seeing Newton. And him being wrong about the killer and the case. But kinda right too. Love it! 5. That fabulous last scene. I love the image of Walternate stepping into this universe but I'll have more to say about it in the next episode. 6. Walter having a breakdown over food in a grocery store is so incredibly fitting for his character. It has been such a father-son activity for him, it's no wonder it's triggering. (Also it unlocked a very European memory of days long gone when we discovered E numbers in food and collectively decided they will kill us lol my mum carried a laminated list in her purse, was checking every product we were buying lmao) 7. It could be my (15 years older) mind playing tricks on me but there are scenes where I find Peter looking particularly boyish? Younger than usual? It just underlines his journey imo. He's right back to who he was when he left everything behind the first time. And when Walternate appears, he looms over him and Peter's reduced to a lost child. BTW the finale is a two-parter. Will you be watching it together or separately?

Dakara, two episodes to go! Yes, Season 2 has 22 episodes, HOWEVER, remember that 2.11 was actually NOT a Season 2 episode - it was just transmitted at that time... So, 2.22 and 2.23 are the last two episodes of this season, and, even if you do not post them on the same day, you should really watch them on the same day!

I love this episode. I love the fact that they took a secondary character like Sheriff Mathis and made me care about her in just one episode. I love Martha Plimpton's performance as the Sheriff, she's tough and smart and vulnerable. I just love the whole atmosphere of this little northwest place that Peter has stumbled upon with the trees and the darkness and the rain. I love Peter's whole transformation into Walter as we move through the episode, culminating with his very Walter like blackboard lecture. I just love this Peter centric adventure. The whole episode is just a treat, much better than a simple throwaway show to get us to the finale. P.S. I will always remember the significance of "Find the crack" Just like I will remember the white tulip from a previous episode.

The look on Peter’s face when Walternate steps in kills me every time. He is suddenly a little boy again, and Josh Jackson’s facial acting! His posture change! Ugh I love good acting!!!

re #4: task failed successfully lol

Martha Plimpton ( Mathis) has been in tons of shows, But I know her best as the girl in The Goonies.....

I do agree with you there, Dak, that Olivia and Walter actively seeking Peter out and going to him feels like a bit of an invasion of his space and his boundaries, although he might have been more forthcoming in asking them to be left alone and to be respected in that. So maybe there is a hint of punishment in Peter's actions with cutting off all contacts cause he does feel betrayed. But I also really appreciate that Olivia goes to Walter cause I think it shows the bond and respect that they have with each other and how Olivia has really understood where Walter is coming from and cares for his relationship with his son, not just about her own relation with Peter or Peter's well-being

Did you recognize the bridge where they stood looking down at Krista's body while Peter was locked in the police van? It appears to be the place where, a decade later, they filmed the very last scene of SPN. Aside from Goonies, Martha Plimpton was also great in the movie Running On Empty. It's from 1989 and River Phoenix was nominated for an Oscar for it. Plimpton is very good at creating characters who make a lasting impression. Definitely looking forward to the next part of your Fringe journey. I'm very much enjoying experiencing it again, and had forgotten how nuanced it can be.

Man this episode is something else, i watched Fringe way before i discovered Twin Peaks and this episode pays such a great homage (rightfully so because without TP there is no Fringe) to that show. A lot of people have already left some wonderfully insightful comments so i want to focus on a couple of things that i really like in the ep. The first is the whole vibe of the episode when it comes to Peter (my favourite character oh the show btw), i love the contrast between the nomad Sherlock Holmes that he gives off in this whole ep with an almost supernatural inclination (again taken from Twin Peaks) juxtaposed with his profound sense of uncertainty about himself and his place in the world, they managed to balance it really well. The second is obviously the final scene because it’s incredibly dramatic but it’s also earned because it’s a pivotal moment in Peter’s life and for the show as a whole, we finally get to see Walternate in present time and in “our” universe and just like you pointed out you can immediately tell that this is a completely different version of Walter, from the way he walks, the way he is dressed, his posture and finally the way he talks, just a masterclass in character transformation. I cannot wait for the next reaction and i want to especially see your face when you watch the opening scene…. eheheh 😝 P.S. Others have pointed it out as well but i love how much Peter feels like a fusion of Walter and Olivia in this episode, so good.

I got so frustrated with Peter in this one. He should have called Olivia. She would have come and would have helped a lot in figuring out what was going on. The devil's advocate part of me has to point out that Walternate and op Walter are pretty much the same person, but with different experiences that they've reacted to. If Walternate came to this universe and took op Peter to the other universe, then I think op Walter would go down the same path that Walternate has. So that mollifies my willingness to give op Walter credit for changing. I think Peter's initial reaction to get away makes total sense. I think he would have eventually tried to find a way to see his real father, so he would have tried to travel to the other universe. I also think that at some point he would have reconnected with Olivia, but it might take a while. The actress playing the female cop did a really good job. I remember her from The Goonies. She's been in a lot of other things, but that's the role that sticks with me.

I love Martha Plimpton so much. She is part of the Carradine Clan so she has acting in her blood. First time I saw her was in the movie Parenthood with so many big actors I also love, like Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, Dianne Wiest, Mary Steenburger, Jason Robards, Keanu Reeves and Joaquin Phoenix amongst others.
