Hello All!

The start of another season begins and what a way to kick things off! Well my theory of Peter instantly finding out after a kiss is out of the window, woulda been way too predictable in fairness. I'm terrified for our Olivia! The fact Walternate has technology to insert memories into others and is using it to convince Olivia she's alt Olivia is so cruel and unsettling! Shout out to the taxi driver in this absolutely smashing it! Hope we see him again and his family remains safe!

Much love

Dakara x

Andre Royo, who plays the taxi driver is absolutely exceptional. I knew him from the show The Wire; which if you haven't seen, you should 1000% put on your list. It's my favorite show of all time!

Isak Haugerud

Oh, and Lance Reddick also had a big role on The Wire, nearly forgot that 😅

sothcweden

I keep meaning to watch that, as I've seen Generation Kill (another David Simon series) and a colleague keeps telling me that The Wire is better.

Isak Haugerud

Generation Kill is a fantastic miniseries. David Simon has made some amazing stuff, that's for sure.

Hey Dak, i want to start this comment actually talking about your post episode discussion because i don’t think i’m being hyperbolic when i say that it might have been on of the best (if not the best) insight into Peter’s character that i have ever heard any reactor discuss since i’ve been watching Fringe reactions, you really have him pegged as to how he is entering this season in term of his state of mind and i’m glad you do because like you guessed it’s gonna get real messy with him and the Olivias but your comments reassured me that you are actually going to be able to enjoy this season to the fullest and understand each character perspective in this very complex plot and situation, which is something that i can’t say for most reactors when they reach this point in the story, keep it up! I’ll leave at that in regards to future episodes and i hope i wasn’t too spoilery, i just wanted to remark just how spot on you are with your character analysis for this show and specifically for this last few episode, great stuff, especially considering it’s your first viewing of the show (no way i had this kind of analysis after my first viewing) and in this season specifically like i said it’s really gonna help you to understand each character’s actions. Now for the episode itself, boy what a way to start the season, they trick into thinking that maybe Olivia will be able to get herself back much sooner than expected and by the end they actually make doubt if she will ever come back at all, so good. Anna Torv as usual is outstanding but in this one in particular because you can really see how she slowly transforms into Fauxlivia throughout the episode and by the time she has that last conversation with Charlie there is almost no difference, so scary but also so interesting, will she get her memories back? Walternate continues with his mysterious plans, the only thing we know so far is that he want to learn how Olivia crosses over and he wants her to believe that she Fauxlivia to help him in that, maybe so that she will help him willingly? One tiny detail that i noticed for the first time in you reaction is that when Olivia takes Lincoln’s gun from him at the gas station she puts it in the inside pocket of her jacket which is where Fauxlivia keeps her spare gun (as we learned in the finale) such a small detail that shows that she is starting to “transform”, so cool. The scenes with her mother is sooo good and such a torture for Olivia you can see that she is physically fighting to reamin herself but then she gives in. There are a million little easter eggs now that we are actually exploring the alternate world, my favourite one is the musical “Dogs” that you can see in many ads across the episode including one on the taxi and which obviously replaces our world’s “Cats”, so funny. When it comes to the last scene i think i will wait for tomorrow’s episode to go more in depth. Keep up the great reaction and i can’t wait for you to delve more into this amazing season! P.S. When it comes to our Olivia remember that she has a photographic memory so anything she sees she can remember and that’s her “jedi mind trick” as Henry described it, it will come up again in the show.

Katie

I've watched this show so many times and I never associated Olivia putting the gun in the inside pocket being a Fauxlivia trait. Great catch!

Katie

I love this episode. Such a great start to season 3 and Henry the taxi driver is a wonderful character. Here's some more differences between universes shown in this episode: - Dogs the musical is advertised on the taxi instead of Cats. - Tom Cruise is a TV star, not a film star. - Shell and Exxon have merged into Shexxon. - People are playing cricket in the park, implying that cricket is a common sport in Redverse America instead of baseball maybe. - People ride penny-farthings for some reason. - The Department of Defense seal has no eagle and has swords instead of arrows.

christian chirico

Thanks! It really is crazy how many new tiny details i notice with each rewatch, truly a one of a kind show.

DB

I don't think either of the universes is good or evil, same with the characters. They're both just struggling to survive. Redverse's demise started immediately after Peter was taken so it's been decaying for 25 years by this point. They've developed the technology to deal with it but it still seems unavoidable. It's a dying world that is hastily patched up to keep it together as best as they can. Blueverse has just started the same process. If we assume only one world can survive - Walternate is making sure it's his. Is he being vengeful at the same time? Yes, but from his perspective his son got taken and it literally destroyed his world. It's interesting that Fauxlivia decided to keep the fringe. It seems like a compromise between who she pretends to be and who she actually is. I'm gonna admit it out loud - I like Fauxlivia. We will have a lot of conversations about this lol 2nd thing is I genuinely believe we expect too much of Peter ;) There's no way you could realise the difference after kissing someone once for a few seconds. And look how happy he is! I think it's reflected in his wardrobe again (this is admittedly a stretch and I am overthinking). We've never seen Peter wearing a light coloured suit before. It's an odd choice for a government hearing. As if he was trying to stay neutral or not let himself be burdened by blueverse or redverse. Interestingly enough it's not white tho. Tainted innocence perhaps?

DB

Oh and I think it's been 3 days between finale and now because of that Lincoln's comment. Which is an insanely short amount of time to basically brainwash Olivia (and go from red to such flawless blond lol) Redverse really does have some insane drugs lol

Katie

The writers were really on their A game. I've never found a show quite like it. It would be interesting to find out what the writers have worked on since Fringe.

christian chirico

Yep fully agree on your take on the redverse, there will be more time to talk about it in later episode but i think they do a fantastic job this season in exploring their perspective and when it comes to Walternate well… again there is going to be time to talk about him later on and boy there is a lot to discuss, such a fascinating character.

Neumann

my real comments are still spoilery, maybe next episode lol. the only thing i can really say is that henry is a real one, the actor was great

Michael R

It's such a quiet, quick little moment but when she cries...she's alone in the bathroom for just a moment and she allows herself to be overcome with emotion and fear and she cries, such a human relatable moment. I always react to that scene. I always get a lump in my throat because it makes her human and real. She's still a badass but she's a human badass, much more fun to watch much easier to love and root for. My other favorite thing about this episode is Henry. Fringe has a habit of bringing in outside characters (not regulars) played by good actors who can take these little roles and expand on them making them likable and relatable. Henry is one of those I just love him, he is also an inspiration because he's had self inflicted troubles in the past.

Mirko Paskota

So, over there the spelling is: Manhatan (with a single t).

3dbadboy1

Do you watch more than one Fringe episode per week? (I hope so :))

Mirko Paskota

Dakara, PLEASE do not shorten your post-episode discussions - they are great!!!

Mirko Paskota

Two per week, posted on Thursdays and Fridays.

PaulC

Haha, the bloke riding past on a penny farthing is so random - Dak's WTF expression said it all!

sothcweden

Not sure if someone has mentioned it before, but Jasika Nicole modeled Red'verse Astrid on her sister, who is on the autism spectrum. She said that Alt!Astrid is higher-functioning than her sister, but her sister was the inspiration. Nothing wrong with you rambling on in your post-reaction chat, especially if it helps you digest the ep. This show is more complicated than most, to the point that folks created graphics to track it. I can't share any right now, however, because they're spoilery. If folks don't want to listen to your thoughts, they can hit stop. I agree that it would be too simple to have Peter realize it's not Olivia with one kiss. Partly because this show never seems to take the easy emotional path: like another show I adore - Farscape - this show believes in consequences (except where a cool nanite remedy can be used).

Neumann

how would she get rid of the bangs? it's not like she could grow them out in 3 days lol

DB

@Neumann You can comb them away and fix with a bit of hairgel, incorporate them into a braid, sweep them away to one side and pin them. As someone who has made the impulsive mistake of requesting fringe before I have experience in hiding it lol

Michele

This start to season 3 is looking like things are going to be getting very complicated. Yes, I'm not a fan of alternate universe story arcs, but some of it can be done in a way that makes it still enjoyable to watch. I just don't want them to fall into the same ole same ole tropes. I wasn't surprised that Peter didn't notice anything different with the kiss. It was just a short and simple kiss and not much energy behind it. Plus, we don't know how much time they had together when they kissed for the first time. This was all brand new for both of them, so they're still in the discovery phase of things. I was worried about the taxi driver and if he'd get in trouble for helping her.

TheMartinScott

Great episode where we see more about Olivia and also get to see how brilliant of an actor Anna is; conveying such tiny nuances - we can feel the differences as she shifts characters - often without even knowing why or what she is doing differently. Olivia’s Memory In Season One, Olivia explains to Peter that once she sees something, she never forgets. This suggests she has an eidetic (often called “photographic”) memory. It’s also worth noting that some people compensate for disorders like ADHD or OCD by developing better-than-average memory techniques. Marilu Henner is a famous example of someone with a superhuman memory partly attributed to OCD. Improving Your Memory - (A personal technique) Believe you have a good memory --truly believe you’ll remember. The way we’re taught in school often suppresses memory by tying performance to tests and creating anxiety. This anxiety releases chemicals that make it harder for the brain to store memories. By having confidence in your memory, you reduce anxiety and avoid those memory-blocking chemicals. One way to build that confidence (besides just telling yourself you have a good memory) is to practice. Glance at a long number or a series of playing cards, then look away and do something else. Later, check how much you can recall. You might surprise yourself, and you’ll gradually improve your recall. Essentially, get out of your own way --let your subconscious handle the task of remembering. Stop overthinking it and trust your mind to do its job. (This is one reason people that profess to be good at remembering, are.)
