Hello All!

Cooky episode this one but one I really enjoyed. I found some moments really pivotal. Olivia realising her worst enemy is herself and having that eye opening moment felt huge. At first I believed the man in her dream was just someone she made up and needed to defeat within herself (i.e fear) but then seeing the end of the episode I instantly second guessed that! I always enjoy the twists and turns within this show and look forward to hearing what you guys think/thought at this point within the story.

Much love

Dakara, Thanks for another excellent reaction, and a brilliant post-ep discussion. Regarding the cartoon part of the episode, this was not some great convoluted plan - it is just that Leonard Nimoy's health at the time of recording this episode did not allow his physical presence on the set; instead, the production team went to his house and recorded all the audio needed, and then attached it to the animation. I agree with you - out of all animated characters, Peter was the worst and did not look all that much like JJ.

At the end she said it so casually because she's not afraid of anything.

Glad you also appreciated the bit about Peter recognizing the real Olivia. I love that this show really foregrounds the relationships amidst the sci-fi wackiness, though I don't just mean the Peter/Olivia. This ep wouldn't have been as good without the time spent on Walter's feelings about Bell, Astrid's careful care, and how Olivia's mindscape was a representation of her lifelong trauma from what Walter and Bell put her through. I think it's impressive to get that in an episode that could have been just a cool trick of having the characters animated. They took the "let's try something wacky" premise from Brown Betty (which I know was forced on them at that point), took it a step further this time, and even pushed the emotional arc forward in the process. The other show I adore that did this kind of thing is Farscape, a mostly-Australian sci-fi show that ran for four seasons, starting in 1999. It sometimes failed gloriously, but never by playing it safe. I think you'd likely enjoy it if you haven't seen it (and I'd love to hear your post-ep thoughts on it), as it has all the emotional resonances that Fringe trades in once it finds its feet, but it's even more niche than Fringe so you probably wouldn't get the YT engagement you'd prefer.

This is the annual episode 19 fish out of water episode. In season 1 it was Olivia looking into the red universe for the first time. Season 2 was Brown Betty and now This. There will be one for season 4. Season 5 will be episode 9.

Neumann

and now full steam ahead to the end of the season! i can say that confidently with no fear of spoilers because 1) you've definitely already watched the next episode by the time im posting this comment, and 2) common sense would say that the last 2 episodes wouldn't be light on the plot lol if you ever actually do a bald cap reaction, dont mention it. just go about the video as if everything is normal lmao. and don't worry about not knowing what episode the observer is gonna be spotted in because you'll be the observer!

I wonder if the cartoon aspect was done because of Leonard Nemoy not being available or something. It's easier to do voice over's than filming scenes. Or, it was easier to do those scenes if they did them this way. Either way, it was interesting. Shows like this seem to like doing quirky stuff like this. I wonder how they'll surpass this one.
