Hello All!

Love the concept of this! The Observers running hell upon humanity and Fringe trying to coexist whilst hating their methods was wild to see. I do love that we saw Etta!! Also a huge addition was how she had gifts to 'blag' the Observers. I cant wait to see where S5 goes after this episode!! It's gotta be good!

Much love

Dakara x

Season 5 here we come!! God i love this episode and the world they created in it, it’s so jarring seeing so many observers together going about their day when for so long they were just these fleeting figures in the back of the episodes, but in this one they take the center stage and they are truly terrifying. Captain Windmark is so fascinating to me, he is like a reverse September, he is interested in humans not for their incredible capacity of love but for their ability to be controlled like animals, so creepy. Henrietta!!! God everything about her is perfect, her name, her looks, her personality, truly one of the best casting of all time, i mean come on the second she comes out of the shadows and starts talking you can tell immediately that she is Peter and Olivia’s child through and through and then she has the bullet… a reference that you definitely wouldn’t have gotten if you had watched the episodes in order 😉. John Noble is amazing in this episode once again, the way he plays Walter before and after the brain implants is incredible and this is one of the very few times in the whole show we actually get to see Walter with his full brain, outside of the two flashback episodes the only other time was when Newton in season 2 had temporarily reattached them after kidnapping him to learn how Walter had created the machine to cross between universes and just like that time the second Walter gets those parts of those brain back he becomes much much more sharper that we’ve ever seen him and kind of an asshole at times if i have to be honest 🤣, you can really feel that this version of him knows that he is pretty much always the smartest man in the room by the way he looks at people, even at the end of the ep he easily cut William Bell hands out and left him for the observes no questions asked, that was cold even if it’s William Bell we’re talking about. I won’t go into deep to analyze this episode because i want you to enter season 5 as spoiler free as possible but there is going to be A LOT to talk about as soon as you do start it. I’m glad that you agreed with us about the placement of this episode, i don’t want to bring the subject up again because i’ve had plenty of discussions about it already so this will be my last comment on it but i just wanna say that i’m just so glad that you followed our advice because i truly believe you gave yourself the best possible experience. Can’t wait for you to dive into season 5, like i said in the previous comment it’s by far the most unique season so if you were looking for a change of pace after season 4, trust me you got it, i really look forward to your reaction!! P.S. Glad you enjoyed my comment about Jones and that it helped you see the character in a different light, he remain one of the most fascinating characters of the whole show and i partly still think they could have done even more with him but i also know that it can’t be easy to write that type of character and all in all i’m just glad that they brought him back in season 4 for an encore performance!

I must have watched the whole show at least four times before it occurred to me that her being named Henrietta comes from Henry - the cabbie to whom Olivia was so grateful for helping her!

It's a lot of spoilers. You have the William Bell reveal, the pregnancy, Astrid being alive, Olivia being alive, the Observers being the ones that ''they're coming'' , etc.

I honestly think Season 5 is perfect from beginning to end. And it's the most logical way to take this show in. And I honestly think the people that don't like season 5 they just don't understand it. Observers were a huge part of the show since the beginning, and their true intentions have never been revealed up until now. We had so many snippets of their true intentions over the course of the show but... ...Nothing more revealing than Season 2 Episode 3 'Fracture' - when that military guy practically predicted the whole of Season 5 (now that's some amazing foreshadowing) when he said that the Observers want to exterminate us and that they are studying us. I love Season 5 (it's my most favourite season) probably tied with season 2. And I cannot wait to see more.

DB

Etta, Ella, Eddie? Dunhams name their kids like my mum names her cats lol Anyway I hate the name Henrietta but I've read enough of r/tragedeigh to realise there are way way WAY worse names out there! I'm gonna be in minority here for sure - I liked S5 less than S4 and I already didn't like S4 a whole lot :(

Big L for not wearing the observer costume for this one

I still think this would have been perfectly fine — better, even — as 4x19 and I absolutely cannot be convinced otherwise. This is not like 2x11, which was filmed and intended for season one and aired later due to weird network bookkeeping. This was written as, and meant to be, the episode between 4x18 and 4x20, and honestly, I think viewers even telling a reactor to switch the order solely for their own viewing preference is itself a spoiler. It has nothing to do with fixing an airing problem and everything to do with the whims of a fandom that can't bear the thought of telling a story in anything but linear, chronological order. Not everything needs to be a special surprise reveal, and in either viewing order, a major reveal is changed — in normal episode order, there's the surprise the Etta is their daughter, Henrietta, at the end of the episode, and in the broken, wrong order, the pregnancy reveal is a surprise (but not really because they telegraphed it the entire episode anyway), but then Etta's identity is kind of obvious for most of the episode. The bullet and Olivia's survival are resolved so quickly within 4x22 anyway that even knowing about it in advance isn't a huge deal, because if you haven't seen the finale, it's not really even going to register here. It's significant, sure, but without knowing why, it doesn't really stick until AFTER you see them save Olivia. Even the supposed cliffhanger at the end of the finale doesn't NEED to be a cliffhanger, because again, not everything needs to be a super special shocking surprise.

Brian O'Connor

As you pointed out, the 4x19 debate will always be controversial, because the order does change the reaction which is what we are here for. If you go in the original airing order you may get a little more reaction putting the pieces together in regards to Etta and her relationship to the team and wonder what Bell did to Olivia. However, in waiting to after 4x22 you get to react to who is coming, the bullet, the pregnancy, bringing back Bell and Astrid still being alive. When I watched it live, the later two were the more significant ones for me as it changed everything. 4x19 brings Bell back into the mix when many are just thinking Jones and you start thinking maybe it isn't Jones behind it all. Then you have the Astrid cliffhanger because as you found out it generated a far more emotional reaction with cliffhanger. After all she's a beloved character but not the lead and we remember what happened to Charlie. So why I can always be fine either way, I appreciate observing a different reaction and one that felt a bit more authentic. It was just more of the 4x21 reveal and cliffhanger than 4x22.

Brian O'Connor

No spoilers, but just for fun. Even in season 5 they continue to produce some of the best moments in television (especially in those final scenes). Yazoo, Only You, music, lyrics, hope, and acting at its finest. Why did Walter love music so much? What is hanging on the rear view mirror? While not the same cab, cab #44 is a callback to the 44th episode of the series 3x01. Plus many more Easter eggs to come. Simon says, the actual game involving green green green red. Enjoy the final 13, and who knows if you have another friend or family member thar wants to watch and react with you, the pack might join you for that too.

Elsa Millie

I'm so impressed how quickly you clocked that Simon was played by the actor in Lost. I only just realized that in the past couple of months. I've seen that actor in two shows (Lost and Scandal) and Desmond is by far my favorite character in Lost and it still took me about 4 rewatches over the course of about 4 years to put that together lol.

DakaraJayne

I totally get that and after seeing it, i get why both orders work for different reasons. It's always gonna be a hard to please everyone going into these reactions. Im sorry this wasn't the choice you'd have liked me to make but hopefully it didn't ruin the Fringe journey here for you El.

Philip Fry

I adore that both Olivias named their children after Henry. Even though he's not in many episodes, he's such an impactful character, it's beautiful they remembered him that way. I also love how they used episodes throughout the series to set it up, like 2x3 where the colonel uses human bombs to try and stop the Observers from passing information. It just seems like a filler relating to the war with the other universe until you see this and realize it was about the invading Observers all along. And that final scene is one of my favorites in the entire series. That "Hi, Dad" gets me every time. And Etta's theme is such a beautiful piece of music in a show filled with beautiful pieces of music. They sure know how to tug on the heartstrings.

Thadman

When I'd said in previous posts that I thought I'd watched the 1st episode of S5 and that's where I stopped, I was mistaken 'cause I was thinking this was ep 1 of S5. When I watched this episode this time, I said, "Oh wait, THIS is what I saw," then I watched ep 1 of S5 and said, "Yeah, nope. Hadn't seen this." I've been REALLY liking it and can't wait for you to get into it.

El

It didn't ruin the journey — but as much as I've been enjoying your S4 reactions (which are great, as ever), my memory of not really liking the season itself when I watched it on the air kind of held up. I found the ending (in either order) kind of anticlimactic, and agree with you that the season overall could have been paced better. I feel like the show really peaked with season 3, and they fumbled 4. I was hoping there'd have been more episodes dealing with the interactions between the universes, the different timelines, and generally showing a progression instead of just telling us in episode 20 that the other universe was showing improvement. So the season itself was a letdown, but your reactions were not.

When they get stopped by the loyalist, at the train station, asking for papers, Walter says "Prisoner? I am not a number, I am a free man" The quote "I am not a number, I am a free man" is most famously associated with the 1960s British television series The Prisoner, specifically spoken by the character Number Six, played by Patrick McGoohan. The show features Number Six as an unnamed British intelligence agent who is imprisoned in a mysterious village after resigning from his position. The series explores themes of individuality, freedom, and resistance against control. Then Walter says "These are not the droids you are looking for" a famous Star Wars quote that Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi uses as mind control to convince a Stormtrooper that he got the wrong people. In that same scene, Agent foster says, He is not a prisoner, he is her grandfather. (So technically they did tell us that Etta is Olivia's and Peter's daughter, but at that moment of the episode we didn't know whether of not to believe it, specially considering that Agent Foster didn't seem to be aware of the true relationship between Etta and the original Fringe team, and he seemed to have said it just to convince the loyalist to let them continue. I love season 5.

Brian Dworak

I love this episode and am glad you watched it out of the order it originally aired in. Georgina Haig (Henrietta Bishop) is stunning and looks like she could be the eldest Fanning sister of Elle and Dakota. I liked her in SNOWPIERCER, although that series was ultimately disappointing, and her role as Queen Elsa in ONCE UPON A TIME (don't judge me). I'm looking forward to seeing more of her here *fingers crossed*.

christian chirico

I wholeheartedly i agree, they really tie all the remaining loose ends in this season plus i really believe the characters are at their best written in this one, i partially get why it wasn’t easy for some people to digest it because it is considerably different to anything that came before both in structure and tone and i think some people got turned off by that, i believe it’s the best possible ensign the show could have gotten and can’t wait for Dak to dive into it, as for my personal placement amongst the seasons i always find it hard to position again because it’s so different from the others but season 4 remains my personal favourite (just has a special place in my heart) and 5 is definitely in contention for that second spot along with season 2.

Leonardo

For those of us that watched this episode before the end of season 4, it was much harder of a stretch of the imagination to arrive at the possibility of Etta being their daughters. Because we haven't gotten to the part of seeing Olivia announce her pregnancy. And while it spoiled Astrid surviving the gun shot and them saving the universe; Olivia's fate wasn't spoiled because she isn't on this episode and the only mention of her was when Walter says to Astrid on the train in the end "do you remember what he did to Olivia" in reference to cutting Bell's hand.
