This is where I stopped to wait til you caught up. I also didn't want the show to end. Guess I'll finish it soon. (*sigh*)

This is hands down one of my favorite episodes of Fringe. It’s so beautifully written (like almost all of this season). Nina defiantly standing up to Windmark, and telling him that in fact, he’s the animal, and beneath her…. lives rent free in my mind. What a brave woman… Windmark even remarks that he doesn’t detect any fear in her. And of course, she nobly sacrifices her own life, to protect Michael, and ultimately to protect mankind. I really have to hand it to the writers. This was supposed to be a story arc that they intended to develop over at least two seasons. But when they found out they only had one season left, they expertly crafted it to fit into a single season. I understand why some might not be a fan of this season due to the time jump, and the almost complete tonal shift in the show. But it still fits within the overall theme of the show, and has some of the best and most poignant scenes in the entire series. Fringe is honestly one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. It’s frustrating trying to get people to watch this overlooked masterpiece, because you almost have to give away some of the plot to convince them it’s worth watching. Also, while Nina’s heroism is at center stage here, we should also recognize that September is a real one. He’s defied his own people, over and over, to help us. Whatever the plan is, he’s technically the one who came up with it. He is literally willing to sacrifice his own people, and the future he comes from, for the version of humankind in this era. To save us from oppression, and eventual extinction. He also defied them in order to save Peter, because (as he said) he realized the human connection that Peter had with Olivia and Walter was actually what was allowing him to seep back into existence. Against all logic and scientific expectations. And he thought this bond was worth protecting. It doesn’t really become clear until this season that he was always on “our” side, from the very beginning. The reveal that September is actually Donald, and the loving smile that he gives to Walter in the memory, likewise lives rent free in my head.

Windbreak is an hilarious slip of the tongue name 😂😂 much more of an 80s action hero than Windmark.

I love watching Windmark's smile turn into boiling rage after Nina not just takes her own life, but does so in a way that they can't interrogate her after death. As for the rest, it's yet one more way the writers find to make us cry this season, and they will not stop. Only three episodes to go. This season is shorter, but it brings the total episode count to a nice round 100.

I absolutely love Nina's monologue at the end. It's so satisfying! The technology The Observers use to listen to Nina's conversation is a more high-tech version of what Peter invents for Walter in season 1. It's when they're in the apartment of one of the Cortexiphan patients who nearly spontaneously combusts and Peter uses the melted glass of a window like a record. It then reveals the phone number of Harris. Then in this season it reveals to The Observers that Nina is part of the resistance. There are loads of callbacks to season 1 in the final season

Ahhh the reveal that Donald is September is incredible!! It gives me chills everytime! ❤️

A few things. You is all of us at this point! Nina went out like a badass!! And OMG the animal comparison lives rent free in my head for years now, ever since I first saw this episode! Donald is September is amazing! And the kid observer implications are awesome!

Since I haven't gone past this point yet, I'm just speculating. September must've taken out his implant because 1. he smiled at Walter and 2. he had hair (although that could be a hairpiece) and Peter started losing his hair when he had the implant in. So, if it isn't a hairpiece, his hair grew back. Not sure if that's how it works, but that in combination with the smile makes me think he removed his implant. We'll see.

Nina had a very long life and she died a hero AND told off Win...Skidmark to boot. Couldn't ask for a better end in this world.

Thank you for mentioning this. I forgot to do so in my comment, but it was getting a bit long, regardless. The technology is literally based on the machine that Peter developed. :) Now, given that Peter was erased from the current timeline, and he never technically worked on that case in the revised timeline, it’s logical to think that someone else came up with it (probably much later). Regardless, it’s really cool to not only see the callbacks to earlier seasons, but to see glimpses that the Observers had further developed the technologies developed by Bell, Walter, and Peter (the sublimation device was apparently based on Bell’s technology to move through solid matter, according to Robert Orci). Obviously they know the Bishops and Olivia are quintessentially important to all of human history (the “archaeological team” references this a few times), but it’s also strange to see how indifferent the Observers are to their existence (essentially “they fulfilled their purpose in history, but they are now complicating things, so let them die”). Paints quite the contrast between us, and them.

Nobody mentioned this in the comments so far so here it goes...the child-LIKE observer (since Windmark already clarified that he's not actually a child but a chromosomal anomaly) didn't just showed Walter who Donald was,...if you look at the images they showed slowly, you'll see that he showed him the events of the original timeline where September saved them from the frozen waters of Raiden lake. The original phrase "the boy is important, the boy must live" that throughout the show it is associated with Peter surviving his disease, it is revealed here to be about this child-like observer; while we were thinking 3 moves ahead, September was thinking, since the beginning of the show 5,5 season of TV ahead of us. This also means that Walter has now, in his head, also the memories of his life with Peter, that the Walter of this new timeline didn't have before. Remember Dakara? when you said that you wished they could all recover the memories of the other timeline? Now Peter (for being Peter), Olivia (due to the Cortexifan) and Walter (thanks to this child-like observer) all have their memories back. No spoiler here...There is a particular scene, in the next episode, with a conversation taking place around a music box, that it is one of my favorite scenes of the show; I am looking forward to your reaction of it.

Will Sofer

Most of your comment is semi-spoilerish, as they literally clarify all of this in the next episode. Yes, it’s technically possible to have figured this out from the closing scene, but it would have been better if you had let her figure this out on her own. That’s probably the reason no one else has pointed any of this out.

Leonardo

It is nothing "spoilerish", there is nothing to figure out, they are literally showing us this in this episode. All the images shown in the flashback are from the previous timeline, and the phrase "the boy is important" was followed by a montage of the child-like observer. It is crystal clear that Walter was given those memories back, regardless of what happened in he next episode. I am very careful not to spoil anything and I wouldn't have written it otherwise.

PaulReacts

It is spoilerish, at least until we get confirmation. Especially since Dakara maybe didn't spot it or focused on it. Let the show give her that confirmation. No need to spoil it. Especially since it is specifically mentioned later, in a much more satisfying way, rather then from us.

Hey Dak, i didn’t comment immediately after the episode because i wanted to gather my thoughts about it for a little longer and now that i have i genuinely think that there are very few episodes better than this one in the whole show, it’s just an incredible crescendo of tension as it progresses culminating in back to back outstanding scenes, Nina’s conversation with Windmark and the final scene with Walter and Michael. I’ll start with the first, i personally think this show has an ability that only very few others have, it’s able to elevate any character it wants whenever it wants without feeling forced or cheap and that is so hard to do. Nina gets her swan song in this episode and what a freaking way to go out, showing just how smart and cunning she is but unlike og timeline Nina this version of her is also a parent herself which makes this sacrifice to save Michael so much more meaningful and the way she played Windmark was amazing, she knew Observers have a superiority complex and that is especially true for Windmark and she played him like a fiddle by baiting him into getting angry at her instead of reading her and then when she knew she had no other option she took herself out of the equation in a way that would make it impossible to get read after death (which is something we know they can do), what a scene and what a character ♥️. The final scene is a little bit complicated to talk about because some of it will be fully explained next episode but that flash of memories (?) that Michael showed Walter was amazing, it will be curious to see if Walter got to see it all or if he just saw that Donald is in fact September and what a reveal that is, i love that twist because you can for sure guess it but at the same time they trick you with the hair so you doubt yourself , so good, i would say that the biggest hint was in 5x06 when they are watching the footage in the pocket dimension you can hear September talking to Water in the background, it’s subtle but it is his voice. It’s always hard to do flashes of previously seen scenes in a tv show because it can sometimes feel like they are just reusing stuff out of laziness but Fringe always manages to use it at the right moment to really emphasize that something monumental is happening and it really enhances those scenes imo. A small moment that always hits me is Peter and Olivia looking at Etta’s poster, i will never stop talking about how well they use that poster, it’s always a fixture in every episode after her death and at the same time it haunts Peter and Olivia and it gives them strength, devastatingly good writing. We are so close to the end and things are about to get even crazier, lets go!!

christian chirico

Hey Dak, i wanted to make a separate comment to ask what your plan is for the final 3 episode, i’m assuming you are planning to do 2 episodes this week and the finale next week on Thursday, if that is the case and if you are interested in doing some wrap up reactions for the show the next day i have a few suggestions for post series reaction that you could do, one in particular being a video with the cast and crew done to celebrate the ending of the show and look back at the series as a whole that is present in the dvd and also available on youtube, it’s a great sendoff. I also have other suggestions in case you are interested in doing multiple, let me know.

DakaraJayne

Definitely interested. DM me some links if you could be so kind 🥰

christian chirico

Hope i didn’t go too wild with the links in the DM 😂, i wanted to give you as many options as possible to choose from but i think i might have gotten a little carried away😅.
