Hello All!

What a quirky episode, there were definitely aspects of the episode I found hilarious and very tongue in cheek, for me I didnt feel the connection with this one so apologies if its a fan fav. I think seeing peoples views and memories of certain moments through their eyes was fun but there was a disconnect for me personally. Ready for the next one.

Much love

This is the one. Probably my single favorite episode, because it's HI-larious. It, I think, was the first outright comedic episode and showed the show could make fun of itself AND it gave me my online name, Lord Kinbote. 😁 I can understand if it's not a favorite of everyone because a lot of people at the time, didn't know what to make of it. I, personally, find absurdity hilarious, though.

Not my cuppa tea either, lol. Darrin Morgan wrote this and a few more comedy episodes in the early seasons, but no writing credits in S4 thru 9. The show was having some fun, but these comedy episodes are never ones I re-watch. This one was particularly goofy.

If I recall correctly, I need to rewatch it again with you, it's the first time Scully just comes out and says what all those looks she gives him mean, "Mulder, you're nuts!" 😆 Not the romantic thing, you may have been thinking. 😁

Robert

This is the silliest episode in the series if not all television.

Steve Mercier

Yeah, this one is a personal favorite of mine--a kind of satire of the show itself. Sorry you didn't connect with it, but I'm going to have a good time watching it with you anyway.

When I first watched it, I was just laughing at the craziness of it, but on rewatches, it all makes sense and you can see the thread of truth throughout. There are accounts by unreliable people, but the commonalities in the stories line up and you can see what actually transpired...for the most part.😁 After all these years, I still found it HI-larious.

The subjective truth vs reality, we all know that too well in the US with the rise of certain politicians using terms like alternative facts. For The X-Files, "The Truth is Out There" shows that every witness, from the horny teenager to Mulder and Scully themselves, remembers the exact same event completely differently. There is no single, objective truth. "For although we are not alone in the universe, on this planet, in our separate ways, we are all alone" was strangely a very comforting and true statement for me. Everyone is isolated inside their own subjective experience, but that shared isolation becomes a kind of connection. And it reminds us that we will never know everything. I must add that, for me, this was an iconic episode, like "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose". I guess I like Darrin Morgan's quirky, sarcastic, and a bit cynical writing style. 10 out of 10 for me, that's my truth.

You are right. It's hilarious.

How could you not have a blankety-blank connection to this brilliant bleeping episode?

I think this is just a fun episode. I don't use the term often, but definitely a filler episode, with not plot or real character development. Just some weird fun with a bunch of very random cameos. Jesse Ventura and Alex Trebek as the Men in Black and Charles Nelson Reilly (he was a big comedic actor, voice actor and overall pop culture personality in the 70's and 80's in the USA) as the author. This has a soft spot for me, as I'm a huge fan of unreliable narrators telling the same story but from their own perspectives. Its one of my favorite storytelling tropes. Also, this won't be the last time the X-Files uses that method. :D

Scully became convinced in two-parter "Nisei / 731" that she was not abducted by aliens, but by men, the US military and japanese conspirators. So with that in mind, her disbelief here makes some sense.

The Supernatural episode "Tall Tales", where the Trickster first appears, reminded me of this one the first time I watched it. Sam and Dean hilariously relating their accounts of the same events through exaggerated POVs. Slow dancing aliens and everything. Haha. I'm sure they took inspirartion from this, as with the rest of the X-Files.

A brilliant innovative quirky episode. Great comedy moments, I remember watching this when it was first aired and was in stitches at the cop who constantly swears and gets bleeped. This episode was so clever , where as the film Scream used all the horror film tropes and used them in the film, this did the same with all the X-Files tropes, it was brilliant writing so entertaining. When the X-Files did comedy they always killed it, just a great episode brilliantly executed, one of my favs from the entire series. So many stand out moments my favs are the obvious homage to Close Encounters Of The Third Kind with Lt Schaefer building the mound with his mash potatoes, and of course Mulder in the diner eating the pie, such an overt reference to Twin Peaks with Agent Cooper in the Double R Diner. Of course we also have a brief return of The Stupendous Yappi this one is a 10/10 for me. Darin Morgan really is 'out of this world'!

"I didn't spend all those years playing Dungeons and Dragon's and not learn a little something about courage." That line is the best. LMAO
