Hello All!

Serial killer episode with a twist and as much as Roach creeped me out, I do think the episode was fantastic. What a spanner in the works to have a serial killer potentially be the one that abducted Samantha and poor Mulder really having his beliefs tested yet again! This one was a fav ep for me.

Much love

This is one of my favorite episodes of the series. The score, the lighting, the plot it's just really good.

"A dream is a wish, your heart makes. When you're fast asleep .... ". Sorry, I had to get that out of my system. My sister must have watched "Cinderella" a thousand times when we were growing up. This episode was great. Your reaction was spot on. Serial killers do like to play with law enforcement. They get a perverse pleasure out of showing off. The smugly condescending, I know something you don't know, attitude give them a sense of superiority that they inwardly crave. Roach found a way to get into Mulder's head and took full advantage of it. He took what he knew and what he guessed to construct the perfect mental gameboard. BTW: Third option. Roach was planning to take Samantha, but for whatever reason, went after a different girl.

Even though the X-Files is a Supernatural show with thrilling and spectacular Mythology episodes, and having seen the series several times, for me Paper Hearts is the best stand alone episode of the entire show, with Mulder on the trail again of serial killer Roche who he helped get arrested for the 13 murders, but the number reaches 14 with the girl in Mulder's dream. When they find Roche's trophies of his victims he can see there may be more, and his dreams show that Roche could have been involved in Samantha's disappearance. A fantastic scene on the abandoned bus at the end when Roche is shot after abducting the little girl. A brilliant episode IMHO. This one written by Vince Gilligan. Vince Gilligan is able to write these type of episodes so well, Pusher, Unruhe etc and here with Roche. Many of these serial killers get perverse satisfaction torturing the families of the victims, and this is shown so well here with the arrogance of Roche. You can see here how he managed to create such spectacular characters in Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul from his creations here. Love the 'El Camino' reference as well as Vince was always dropping 'Easter Eggs' from the X-Files in Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul. We can see how Samantha's abduction has left and indelible scar on Mulder that will never heal, this brought me back too to S1 E4 Conduit when he was alone crying in the church at the end thinking of Samantha. This was a stunning episode which once again shows the quality of this incredible series.

“Paper Hearts” is a masterclass in emotional storytelling. The episode drags Mulder through every raw nerve he has - anger, guilt, doubt -and you feel each one right along with him. Just as Scully gets abducted or physically imperiled a few times a season, Mulder gets put through the emotional wringer, and this episode is one of the clearest examples of that dynamic. What really stands out, though, is how present Scully is for him. In this episode and the one before it, 4x9, she’s there for Mulder with total emotional clarity and steadiness, grounding him while he’s spiraling. It’s one of those stretches in the series where you really see how their partnership works: she carries him when he can’t carry himself.”

Happy X-Files anniversary guys! It was exactly one year ago to the day that Dak officially picked up the show for reactions with 1x02. And what an episode to mark the ocassion! The X-Files at it's best. Then again, when is it not?
