Rating - 7.5/10 - I feel I may upset a few people here & I apologise in advance! I did my usual, overthinking the episode while watching BUT please bare in mind I know on a second rewatch I would probably love this one. I'd be able to just relax and enjoy the easy viewing. I found myself wondering what on earth was going on that much that it took me out of the enjoyment a little. Don't hate me! Was nice to see Garth again-as always. Now we are on a mission to Alaska for some luck apparently, I. Am. Ready!

Don’t worry - you’re not alone in your rating. A lot of us thought this episode was really weak.

Purple Nurple

Reading your rating before watching the episode - got to say, a lot of people agree with you. I actually enjoyed most of the episode the first time, but on a rewatch I find this episode a little cringe and I don't like the implication it has either. Of course Sam and Dean can pick a lock without Chuck's intervention! (just don't use a big old nail Dean...)

Luis Nov

Read your rating first and dont worry, a lot of people feel you, there has been a lot of disagreement in some plots among the fans, specially in this season but at least the majority of us finds this one a really stupid concept, what a way to take your lead characters into trash saying there’s nothing special about them and it was all Chuck’s doing, useless little puppets, its a insult to Sam and Dean, and I hated it soo much I hope when cons stats again fans faces the showrunners with this f idea 🙄

rose mnor

Right ... yeah, this episode is a bit disappointing considering it was written by Andrew Dabb, the showrunner. My expectation was high before watching it, but it doesn't work for me too. When we unpack the insinuations that the boys' expertise and live-long skills were just Chuck all along and not them, and he can 'take' it away just like that because he didn't like them anymore? that the boys retained none of the skills that they have used to save the world more than once? the skills that John had taught them? right, that doesn't sit well with me.

Helen Wood

That is not what this episode is about. As is made clear, this is Chuck trying to make them think that they are nothing special. Much of this season involves mind games by Chuck.

Helen Wood

Because it's not true. It's just more manipulation from Chuck.

Helen Wood

Sadly, a very misunderstood episode. Personally, I love it, except for the dentistry (I have a phobia).

Purple Nurple

Having watched Dakara's reaction now - my head canon is Chuck basically 'lucky rabbit footed' them, gave them bad luck in some sort of curse. He didn't take away what they were and their talents. This isn't 'normal' having all that bad luck happen at once, if it was 'normal' it may be a bit more spread out and not all at once. As for the lock picking - you're right Dakara, that nail was way too big to fit into that lock, no wonder they couldn't open it. They usually have a lock pick or something the right size to pick at the lock (well nearly all the time). I thought it was a good concept of the heroes being 'normal' but it tried too hard I think. The music in this episode was bizarre, and some of the scenes were cringe - like the fight with that guy, I'm not watching a cartoon! I don't need fake sound effects when Dean gets kicked in the balls! I wasn't a fan of the direction of this episode. (The guy who directed has had directed a lot of the lower rated episodes in SPN)

Luis Nov

Im glad you see it that way, but for my point of view that's what I get from this episode and for some others that I can't talk because of spoilers, but that been said I do get that this is a lot of Chucks doing but they made it feel (for me) like Chuck was the responsible for them being special and I didn't liked that but Im glad you did :)

Brenda Lewis

This one is complicated for me. I actually enjoyed the episode and seeing Garth his story. But of course like so many fan it doesn't make any sense if we are to believe that previous 15 years. But I view it this way, while Chuck has some influence in the boys lives, there were so many things he didn't have a hand in. Just like with bringing back Eileen, he might have set the board, but the boys are still making their own decisions. I feel like this doesn't give Chuck as much power as he thinks he has. He keeps telling them they'll eventually do what he wants, but as confident as he seems it gnaws at him that they haven't yet. I believe he's not 100 % sure and that's why he's pushing so hard. Chuck might think he's got them now that he and Sam are no longer tethered, but he seems to be working a lot harder than he should have to to be so sure.

PongPong31

I actually love the concept of the episode. But I can totally understand when a lot of people don't rate it as much. For me, this is one of the more meta episodes. In a way, akin to something like The French Mistake, but with a greater degree of nuance. The insinuations that the past 15 years have been seasons of plot armour and convenience didn't bother me. I see it in the sense of the writers actually poking fun at themselves and the show in general. I do agree that the episode itself isn't the strongest, in terms of writing and those couple wacky random scenes. But we needed this. We love it when the odds are stacked against the boys. And hey, who is to say that Chuck isn't just doing this to them actively? While Sam and Dean do have a lot of luck, it's very rare that everything goes horribly in wrong at times, in real life. Chuck could just be manipulating and messing with them even more, on the other end of the scale.

Arushi

You arent alone in not liking this ep. It is actually one of my least fave episodes of the ENTIRE series! It questions everything we know and love about our boys. Infact to be honest s15 e7-10 for me are truly very disappointing and watching it in real time was such a bummer because I kept feeling I dont want to dislike these last few precious ones. For what it is worth, you got some good ones coming up and I personally liked the second half better and abs LOVED the END. Hope you get to experience the same. 🥺

Gina St Phillips

At first it sort of bothered me because although there were some TVisms, like being able to dig up a perfectly rectangular grave and it not taking all night, and they didn't show a lot of regular guy moments, but the whole premise of the show is that Sam and Dean don't have powers (usually) and still win. They are the every-man but they CHOOSE to be fearless, selfless and devoted to each other and family. I chalked it up to Chuck not taking away their good fortune so much as loading up the bad luck to make them think they had been helped by Chuck more than they actually were. *shrug* Anyway, it was mostly a comedic episode and a chance to bring in Garth for the finale season. The dancing thing was funny and I think the writers just wanted to do a funny sequence when Dean was under the influence of nitrous. I can imagine them deciding, wouldn't it be awesome if we made Dean fantasize about dancing and made Jensen learn to tap? LOL

Hasnaa

Ugh, I don't like this episode at all, I don't like that they made Sam & dean incapable of picking a lock or walk or not touch a hot pot coz "it was chuck giving them basic skills all along" that there's nothing special about them, that all of their harsh upbringing & training with john meant nothing, the whole episode feels weird to me, I would've preferred if they explained it as chuck cursed them with bad luck instead of taking away their plot armor, the only part I like is dean dreaming about dancing, that at least checks out, dean always secretly wanted to dance, remember in season 7 when those ballet shoes were trying to get him to wear them, they were cursed objects that attracted people who wanted to wear them, dean wants to do lots of things that he just doesn't do coz "reasons"

Butterfleaz

Honestly I was also confused during this episode, like wtf was happening I'm pretty sure they can pick a lock without Chuck intervention ! But while watching it for the second time with you, I just couldn't stop laughing. You were as confused as I was when I watch it for the first time, and after the previous episode I feel like we needed a light episode like that (and that tap dance scene ! as someone who have a lot of years of dancing, I absolutely love it ! )

Ryan Butler

I remember seeing this for the first time thinking "I didn't know David Lynch directed an episode of Supernatural."

AussieOfSteel

I am very polarised on this episode. Seeing Garth again was great, the whole Monster Fight Club thing was fine, Chuck giving Sam and Dean "normal people problems" was also fine, but yeah I do recall first watching this and being confused, wondering "hang on, so all their training, all they've done is just because Chuck allowed it? ". On the other hand I guess it's sort of a meta commentary on plot armour? In any case I'd rather think of it as just Chuck briefly screwing around with them because they "defied" him last ep.

rose mnor

I am using the phrase 'doesn’t sit well with me’ above, since THAT phrase? resonates with me for reasons that I don’t have to go into (*wink wink*). Dabb is a f***ing genius. There is a message here and beyond. Just look at Dark Side of the Moon, fans are still talking about it since it aired, it doesn’t feel dated. Beren's episodes of connecting S14 Absence, S15 The Rupture, The Trap, and after that, are all intertwined with his telling of the story of two of our beloved characters’ plot arc. And I am also hung up with Yockey’s “...foreshadowing...“ from Proverbs 17:3 in 15x5 with Nihilism from S14. Not to mention Perez’s Atomic Monsters from 15x4. All I am gonna say is, Supernatural is a heavily serialized series, we have to look at the overall picture, i.e. more than one episode for its inter-connections, and now I am walking a thin line with spoiler territories.

Josee (Griffe)

I liked the concept, didn't care much for the delivery of this episode. Too much slap stick (then again, the dream sequence was less over the top then the final fight scene 🤷‍♀️) and ackward music choices. I agree with what has been said in other coments; 'normal' doesn't happen all at once to normal people, and sure, picking a lock could be a lot harder than before (they were maybe just too impatient to succeed) but the car broking down two days in a row and Sam not using oven mitts TWICE in the same scene doesn't make any sense if they are "just" downgraded to everyday folks. So Chuck is probably being mean and petty with is favorite characters and 'inspiring' Garth to tell them that it just being normal. (Then again, it might be normal for someone like Garth...)

AdoptDontShopPets

Agree with you completely that it was a good concept but the overly cartoonish nature didn’t work for me and so many of the jokes just were not funny to me. It felt like it was written to entertain a child.

Susan Sebert

I liked this episode, it was more light hearted especially after episode 8. Loved the dancing dream under nitrous oxide (people do have weird dreams with that), and all the bad luck they had since they don't have their plot armor. Not much else to say, just a fun episode.

AdoptDontShopPets

Not a fan of this episode. The concept could have been OK, but imo it is just not a well written episode, plus going for a final live action Looney Tunes fight at the end, was just embarrassing for all. Not to mention Sam not using pot holders or a towel, twice! That does not fit with having bad luck or losing plot armor. It just makes him look like an imbecile, unless plot armor meant that he never used potholders in his entire life and never knew that he should….Which sure does not sound right for someone who got into Stanford. To make it make sense, I guess we have to assume that having a cold made his brain foggy and forget how to cook. What did I like about the episode? Dean’s tap dance on top of the table and him watching Garth and Bess dance. I like when Dean thinks about doing something that doesn’t fit within his typical Hunter lifestyle. And unlike most of the folks here, I didn’t mind the opening fight scene with the orchestral music. I thought it was an interesting way to frame the fight or act of fighting as something noble or beautiful.

PongPong31

"I chalked it up to Chuck not taking away their good fortune so much as loading up the bad luck to make them think they had been helped by Chuck more than they actually were." I'd the same thoughts.

rue

Mmm, it makes me so happy that Garth has his happily ever after; if anyone ever did deserve it...! And headcanon that Chuck ensured Sam's lanky limbs didn't knock over every object in the general vicinity haha.

Lauran Mitchell

For me--I find the episode entertaining, but it's not high up on my rewatch list. I think it's pretty clear (though it could be made clearer for sure), Chuck is messing with them to make them doubt themselves. I absolutely could buy that he has helped them out with some things over the years, but suddenly forgetting to use oven mitts? All those other things going wrong all at the same time? So NOT "normal". The dancing in the episode has been greatly meta'd--I won't go into detail, but the implications that there is so much more that Dean wants from life, but it's his own hangups that stop him--ahhh.

Michele

This sounds harsh, and I apologize for that, but I hated everything about this episode. The premise that Everything Sam and Dean have accomplished was done only because Chuck helped them. I can't allow that. That ruins so much for me. They did it! Themselves. So much of this was just stupid. It ruins too much. What's even the point then?

Ashley

I can't even give a critique of this episode. Hearing you call Sam "Samantha" within the first few minutes of the episode gave me such nostalgic vibes I got teary eyed lmao 🤣. It's been a while since you called him Samantha 😢

jennylovessupernatural

I think we all had that "WTF moment" with this episode XD But Dean and Garth's dance scene was brilliant. I read a post about this episode that sort of explained why it felt so "weird" and all I can remember is that it was a certain style of filming....

DakaraJayne

That kinda surprises me tbh. I felt with it having so much humour and Beloved characters in it, it’d be high on people’s enjoyment list. Glad I wasn’t alone on wondering what on earth was happening for the most part haha.

DakaraJayne

Ahh so you felt the more you watched the more you didn’t enjoy. That’s interesting. I assumed I’d enjoy more on rewatch - could be wrong though. The picking the lock confused me as well they suggested it was ‘luck’ based but that’s skill based…surely? Right?

DakaraJayne

Kind of a relief tbh, thought I’d get some hate for that as I rarely vote and ep lower than an 8 haha. I felt that too tbh, I liked the concept of Chuck pulling the strings but I got confused as to the difference between, luck & basic knowledge and skill.

DakaraJayne

I’m glad you’re a lover of it :) always enjoy hearing people’s excitement and love of an episode. What is it that makes this one a personal favourite of yours? There’s a good chance it’ll make me see it in a new perspective.

Toasted Toad

I have a head canon that Dean’s teeth went back to normal after this episode, although the programme never says that this particular thing was reversed.

Purple Nurple

The first time I watched I just let it take me along for the ride, although I had the same reaction as at that 'dance' scene. The nail thing - normally they can pick locks with things to hand, but in this case that nail was just too big to pick that lock. No amount of skill would have helped. But because their thoughts were all over the place with Chuck's manipulation, they might have thought it was Chuck erasing their ability to pick locks. It must make them question everything

Valcor

The oven mit scene was stupid and I think that's just due to the writers fucking up But the car breaking down twice kinda makes sense. If you think about how old it is and the fact they most likely never serviced or repaired it.

Valcor

I really liked how the boys lost their "plot armour" because like you said it makes alot of sense. I mean Dean basically lives on burgers , bacon and beer. So its realistic that he would have some health issues lol. I think its an excellent way to poke fun of the plot armour the boys have been given the entire show. Now they don't have that protection anything could happen, which makes it more interesting. Seeing Garth get a happy ending was also nice and Dean and Sam looking at him at the end wishing they had that life.

Josee (Griffe)

I would have thought that a guy that rebuilt his car basically from scratch twice would think of regular maintenance on his baby... They were doing it in season 3, on the road; now they have access to a big garage (but maybe the parts are harder to get since they don't have access to Singer Salvage Yard).

Chrissy

I liked this episode. Didn’t love, but liked. Im so glad Garth got his happy ending. I was so worried they were going to kill him off in season 14. This episode has my all time favorite line in the entire 15 years when Dean says “not everything we did was because of Chuck, the blood, the sweat, the tears man, that’s us”

Jack

I love the whole bad luck subplot but I just wish they hadn’t written it as if Chuck had just taken away their mojo. I think if Chuck had just given them bad luck to mess with them that would have been more enjoyable for me
