Hello. I was hoping to be able to show the CS system to you at its finest, but it's still in a state where I don't know if it will really turn out. So instead, I'm going to show you the CS System at its worst!

Massive progress has been made since last time I made a post, when he could barely do anything. Now I have at least one clip of him working surprisingly well, and it can be fun to watch. This is an ambitious idea, and if he truly becomes a master, he will impress you with what he can do. But let's go back to the start.

You may wonder who "he" is. Well you see, I am training a simple, prehistoric caveman named Grugga in the art of cinematography. I've watched every episode of Every Frame A Painting, so I'm basically an auteur and I can teach him. In my last post, Grugga was shaking the camera around like a maniac. He wasn't ready yet, he didn't know what a camera was, and being thrust into the director's seat frightened him. So he acted out.

Grugga's Journey

The Cinematic Spectate system--or Cinespec as I call it--or Grugga--is based off of different types of shots, each with their own rulesets to gauge the quality of the current shot, all of which I teach through code. This was the very beginning; once I had gotten Grugga to hold a camera properly, all he really seemed to care about was the Rule Of Thirds. And all he knew was the static shot.

Grugga at this point was like an amateur art-house film director. Somehow he slavishly followed all the basic principles I taught him while still going for the craziest angles whenever he possibly could. He also wasn't able to take into account any other subjects other than the player he was watching. I did eventually make it better by emphasizing that he should try to look where the player is looking or moving towards, and that's about where he was at when we recorded this playtest:

Action follow cam

In this video you also see another shot type, the following action shot. It's inspired by The Shining.

At least until recently, it's been much less steady. But it was so funny that I just ran with that for a while, considering it like a shaky cam.

I made this specific type of shot so early because I was really focused on trying to make it look good when the subject is running around a series of tight, winding tunnels. Following a subject like that is harder to film than I expected, especially when it's happening live and you don't know where the subject will turn next.

Recent Developments

Then I refined Grugga's abilities for about the next week, teaching him new shot types. The most significant of these was what I call the Scenic Shot, which uses a low field of view and distances the camera as far as it can from the subject, panning to follow the subject. This panning element made the scenic shot so versatile that I'm able to use it indoors as well as outdoors, and it really helps where Grugga is still too dumb to use the static shot correctly.

Now, sometimes, rarely, I would actually prefer this over the current spectate system. (But Grugga still has a heart of gold, and if there is a Manticoil or some flying bugs in his range of awareness, he will include them in the shot at all times no matter where they are. He can't help it.)

Besides that, I've been putting loads of work into a "Shot Reverse Shot" shot for the camera, which reacts to players who are talking and looking at each other. It reacts to voice chat by cutting to each player's face like in a movie. I haven't seen it work well yet, and I think it will be somewhat niche. But it will be worth it when it works, because you'll really feel as if you're watching a Lethal Company machinima on Youtube. And after that, I'll probably work on a dramatic zoom or dolly-zoom camera which reacts to dramatic moments by zooming in on the subject... but this requires adding in some new variables which can be used universally and give Grugga more intelligence on what's happening in the game.

Will It Work?

Part of why I still don't know if this will work is because it requires so much touching up for small, specific situations. The way I've set it up, it's quite easy to make changes (and adding new shot types is kind of addicting), but it still requires a lot of testing and work, and I don't know how much more work it will take. I know that it will always be far from perfect, and I have some very, very good ideas for new creatures which I'm about ready to get to modelling. So my goal right now is to get Cinespec to the point where it's not completely distracting and annoying at least 50% of the time. Part of what makes me think this is not a total pipe dream is that it has some fundamental things going for it: 1. It intuits which player is the most interesting to watch at any given time and automatically switches to them so you don't miss anything (unless, potentially, it would be more cinematic if you didn't see something). And 2. It will display the exact same for all players, so all spectating players are watching the same thing together like a movie. (And of course if it gets annoying, you can simply click to swap to the old spectate system.)

The next post might be delayed by a week. But by then, I ought to be able to tell you if Grugga is actually going to make it, or if we are going to shoot him...and not with a camera.

Wow, I never would have guessed that this is what you were working on, it's a really unique addition. Would it technically be possible for CS to save a replay of your run, or is that way too complex (or maybe even impossible) to implement?

TomExists

i LOVE this i need it omg im so excited

zeekerss

Hmm. If you mean the kind of replay system that actually saves a simulation of the game in 3d space, that's way beyond me. If you mean a type of system that just records and saves a video on your computer, I think that's more possible, but there's just so much recording/clipping software out there already, and I don't think I could do better.

MrUnCoolBirb

This kinda reminds me of Rockstar's Cinematic Camera button option for spectator mode, which has a similar mechanic to this. I kinda hope that the system can be used to save a replay so we can edit them later or get the gameplay without any UIs and being able to change the camera in any way we like! It could be a cool feature to see what the community can do with a feature like that!

Axel Comstock

This looks so cool! I do have a question somewhat related too, what do you think the next update will be centered around? Maps, things like grugga, monsters even though we just had one, items, or a mix of it all? Its fine if you dont know yet because you're already so busy with everything else.

Brodie D.

This is peak, so excited for the Car Stealer system!!!1! ! !!11`

Peko

I really really hope you get this fully working, this is genuinely one of the coolest things I have seen in a multiplayer game

Shaydelity

I love Grugga already! These things already look decent and with the old system to swap back to this is a really great addition that I am excited to see live :3

Shaydelity

Yet there isn't always someone dead to be able to see what Grugga does so the other clipping/recording software doesn't work for it. Would be cool if those who want it (and have the computational power) can have a recording of Grugga's work (without UI etc.) run in the background while they play to look at later ^-^

shameron

I can watch my friends become a professional actor! in a cinematic style!!

MB24

this is way less big of a feature as I expected but way way way funnier of a feature this looks so cool

Kitriff

I meant like the game replaying everything again in 3D, but I expected that would be wayyy too complex to do. But even a video recording would be awesome. Exactly as Shaydelity said, it's not always possible to see the replay since every run starts with everyone alive, plus not all players have recording software running in the background all the time, so having this option would be great for capturing fun moments easily. But it would complicate development regardless, and likely impact performance too.

jim royale

you killed my cave snallys you sick and twisted peice of #grugga

Vanilly

I need Grugga to make it in the game. The way it dynamically changes the camera angles from low to high while the centipede is chasing them AND the quick pan to the door when it was being opened *chefs kiss* This is why I love the poltergeist mod because it lets you take those cool angles as your friends make the corner while running away from a monster. GRUGGA FOR THE WIN!

bigctheman345

I actually think this (if it works) will be a great change. At least better than most people expect. I think one time Lethal Company really falters is when you're dead and spectating, it's funny when you're first playing the game but it's one of the only parts of the game that I think really loses its charm after a few hours. I can't tell you why, but I used to love watching friends where as now it's "tab out and check messages" time. I think that if this works well enough it can breathe new life into this side of the game and I'm super excited to see where it goes.

MASTRBAITR

I really didn't expect the C.S. to be the Cinematic Spectate system, but I'm all for it. I hope this feature makes it. Lock in Zeekerss💪

sladoledenavafla

nah this is some PEAK right here the way this post introduced Grugga is gold comedy and all about him seems so promising!

Monstro

This is so much different than I expected, but I love it!

RainingLamppost

Seems really good so far, if it ends up being a little janky at times I think that adds to the whole general ethos of the game's style (I mean this is nicest way) - looks like you've been having fun with it too which is v important 🙌

ShyGuy124

Its like how the camera worked in dead seater

Zeekar

This is a fantastic idea lmao, really fun to see you continuing to innovate with the game

TransCat

Don't shoot Grugga pleaaase Zeekerss he has so much to live foorrrrr!!!!!

Tanks Thangs

I really hope Grugga works out cause it adds more to spectating. I am also really glad you are not trashing the old spectate system and letting players swap between them. Some of the time I like to have control over the camera.

Mindrem

This is why I love you Zeekerss, nothing could've prepared me for a whole cinematic camera in a game like Lethal but it fits so unbelievably perfectly that I can't help but feel stupid for not even considering it. Here I was thinking it would be a submarine and then you hit us with this. Looking forward to the next update, I hope Grugga survives because this is like taking the best part of Content Warning and blending it so naturally with Lethal that it feels illegal lmao. I love it so much

Jay Cene

This is fucking genius.

Jay Cene

Stuff like this justifies the patreon sub fr

Number1Riker

Would this be a complete replacement of player spectating or would it just be like another subject you may swap to. If thats the case, would it be possible to just swap who's the primary person its focused on?

Purple Potato

This is fascinating! At first I thought you meant an npc character or maybe a creature that follows you weirdly. Did not expect a new spectate system.

Hayker

This is so awesome and intriguing. Not having to manually swap between players while spectating is a such a simple yet unseen idea, would love to see this implemented in some way or another. Amazing work

PF1MIL

the prototype, especially the last few videos, looks so good! i really hope it makes it to a release, it's cool!

CasualCypress13n

bro put this in the beta branch now!!!!!!!! PLEASE,.... will give it feedback?

brick battla

holy shit lois wake up theres a new peak as hell patreon post! in all seriousness, I cant wait for this. It sounds really cool, especially if you can apply funny filters to it while spectating.

GB

I'll be real, I was 1000% convinced that the CS was gonna be the carjack bloke. This looks awesome!

Fred Schmid

This looks AMAZING I love this idea so much please don’t old yeller grugga

f11BIGT

This is definitely a really cool idea, I think shots from enemy POV's would definitely add that shining feel to chase sequences, especially if its parented to an already animated head bone or similar to sync the camera shake to enemy footsteps. or even one that points behind the player if a bracken is sneaking up on them. there's tons of room here for great shots. A button to refresh the shot would also be a good qol feature. definitely excited, great job.

Kesher Cat

life of death for grugga man

MASTRBAITR

I just realized that the mansion interior doesn't have any toilet's nor urinals. Zeekerssssss!!! This is unnacaptable ):<, Please add them.

ShineyStars

This sounds REALLY cool! I hope it works out!

Nicholas Carta

I can’t express how awesome of an idea this is. It just suits the game perfectly and is super unique!

Gilbert

This whole fixated camera gives me Resident Evil vibes and that's really cool, even with the following one inspired from The Shining. I suppose you saw the movie. Great stuff. :)

eilrahC

Perhaps you could use the employee sanity to determine the shot type, or how close some enemies are. I’d love to see long dynamic shots where instead of cutting to a new shot the camera moves to accommodate for if the player dips into one room and comes back, or just goes out of view. Ultimately the important part is when actions starts and ends. I hope the camera stays on their dead body for a few seconds before it switches to the next most interesting player. I would also love to see a unique shot for if the player missing getting on the ship. There is honestly so much potential in this system but you’re right it needs a lot of testing. Perhaps you could release it as a standalone feature to narrow down its weak points?

eilrahC

Imagine if at the round end it had footage of the best quality clip, or some instant replay feature

eilrahC

Zeekers has said in this post that will still be an option. Everyone can choose between the classic system and CS

Tanks Thangs

I think you may have read my comment wrong <3

TheSalt

This whole system sounds really interesting, and I hope we'll get to see it in action for ourselves one day! My only major worry about the implementation is forcing everyone to watch the same view. I like the idea of finding the most interesting perspective and showing it to all spectators like a movie, but I think having an override toggle so you can watch your person of choice would be appreciated.

Doug Miles

That really reminds me of Resident Evil

míša

this is going to be PEAK

jim royale

i dont wanna download clipping software so this would be good addition

RKKM

hi I sincerely recommend that you watch this video about the lethal company, as it shows all the flaws and errors in the game !!! CAUTION: WATCHING THIS VIDEO MAY CAUSE EPILEPTIC SEIZURES. BE CAREFUL. The video is also in Russian, so I recommend watching it with subtitles. https://youtu.be/w7wMKA2kOWU?si=ZL5L8YMXCw3JRXae

KoreK

yoo it looks cool

Joghe

I just found out about this Patreon and catching up with the updates, has been awesome. That being said, even though I'm 6 months late to meeting Grugga this would be by far one of the best additions Lethal company would get in an update!!!! PLEASE do not can Grugga
