Hello, I decided to take a full-fledged break the past two weeks because I'm in a slump. I'm slightly sick and had just cut down significantly on sugar, since I used to drink several Mountain Dews a day. I did draw some concept art for one of the next enemies I'm going to make, but it was looking a little too cartoony for my liking, and I need to find a way for it to make sense. Or maybe I don't and I'm just overthinking it. I also fixed some issues with Grugga on the side, such as netcode bugs, its behavior with multiple players, and improving the "following shot" type. I've also commissioned someone to make a certain 3D model for the ending of Lethal Company, and that is coming along very well.

My main project the past two weeks has been starting a new book. In 2018, my book called Between Music and Silence just kind of happened spontaneously. (I'm sure it had nothing to do with the fact that I had just read every single thing written by C.S. Lewis.) The first draft was finished by the end of that year, and the manic excitement I had working on that was crazier than any game I've worked on.

Writing stories is not like making games

What I discovered is that writing a book is very exciting because eventually you will find that you are telling yourself the story. Even if you outline a plot beforehand, you will find your characters constantly outgrowing your outline and doing things you didn't expect, causing you to course-correct. That's because no matter how character-focused you make your outline, it is still the eagle's-eye view of their journey. For characters to feel alive, they have to be the ones driving the plot of their story. And it seems to me like the only way to know for sure where your characters will drive your plot is to write them going through it. You just can't treat writing fiction like you do with games; making games is like building weird, eccentric machines, but writing stories is like putting on a live performance.

So what I had was a very good, solid plot with characters that were not in control of it, in a world that was practically empty. The book was terrible.

But there are two chapters in it which I'm still really proud of, and I've always believed something went right here. They are the backstory chapters of Thrin, the side character. So after I made a massive text document analyzing all the large-scale problems with this story, I decided to take her story and make a new one based on her. This is something I've always considered but never acted on.

I am trying to learn from my previous mistakes, which are 1. to let the characters fully drive the plot, and 2. to not take any shortcuts when it comes to world-building. What's funny about the old book is that its world was consistent but took crazy leaps to explain why it was completely empty and boring. No more of that.

World-building is one of the things I feel most inept at. I'm very slow at coming up with details that feel like they fit in, and for some reason I'm more critical of this aspect than I am of plots and characters. And while some people are quite good at filling in the blanks of their world as they write, I am not. So I'm not going to rush this part. I actually feel like I am actively stretching my imagination. I can feel my brain growing. swelling uiuuuueauuueeauuuuueoauoooou

Writing is probably not something I'll ever be really good at. I think I found my natural talent in making games. But that makes writing fun, because it's an enormous challenge and little wins are really big. I'm also getting back into reading. I finally picked up the Lord Of The Rings, and after that I'm finally going to continue The Stormlight Archive, which has been on my mind since I paused it in 2020. Yikes

In the next post, I'm almost sure I will have made massive progress on Lethal Company. There is a lot of fun to be had over the next couple weeks.

its relieving to see grugga truly hasnt entered purgatory, and im also really interested to look at this book when it releases, im not too big of a book guy, and in all honesty ive only really read 10; but thats probably more than most people to be fair. Anyway, take all the time you need for both lethal and your book, im really excited to see what the new enemies are once the update releases, and im really happy to see more work on the ending of the game, im curious to see how it'll really play out.

It's really pleasant with these casual life updates. It's also good to see you're so proactive to prevent burnout, excited for the future updates

Im glad your having lots of fun while writting and that your taking breaks and aren't burning you're self out. Were glad you're taking breaks, instead of pushing you're self too much to the point of hiatus. As for wrriting, in my opinion your already a great writter and im sure you'll be an even greater one evntualy. Also don't forget to drink some water.

Glad to see you are actively making sure you get new inputs! Will help with any craft you may embark on or continue to practice ^-^

Glad things have been moving and jeez I feel you with world building, there's bits I enjoy doing (Entities, types of people, sometimes media) but history, geography, building styles and culture along with anythin to make stuff unique??? Not a single clue... it's something I've been struggling with recently as well so know that you're not alone with the struggle - hope it goes well and you can find ways to enjoy it 🙌!

Not to sound like an asshole but like, when are you not "taking a break"? I get that it isn't your job to work on Lethal Company— you're not obligated to do something you don't want to do—but it gets to a point when people are sitting here waiting for an unfinished game to get content after months, and I open your Patreon to see 3 posts in a row captioned "im taking a break", "im burnt out", "im in a slump" It honestly probably would have been better to just put Lethal out as a 'finished product' and then promise future updates as additional content instead of dropping it into what feels like early access limbo I LOVE your work, and I respect the amount of thought that goes into everything you make, but it's just a little frustrating to see something I care about get sidelined for so long.

Consistent and big updates are what drive reoccurring audiences to come back to Lethal Company. If it was a finished product, people would get situated with the media way too swift and end up becoming bored and then too stubborn to return back. It's the element of "Surprise" which make us curious for what is to come forward. Additionally, Zeekerss isn't always going to be impressed with his work, there will always be a flaw or two which he needs to fully revamp or rework — A finished product would be very difficult and restraining to complete as it'd take probably a huge scale of time on an individual with his experience in developing. Furthermore, new advancements come around, which may allow for Zeekerss to completely tween or construct something he once wasn't able to do.

"not too sound like an asshole, but like [asshole rant]" hes still working on the game, and being able to take that kind of break is a privilege that should be celebrated. no one is forcing you to give a stranger on the internet passive income

Sorry if it seems this way to you, but my progress is quite nonlinear. Just in the last post I talked about totally revamping Offense over the course of just three or four days. I do often wish I was more consistent and less sporadic, and I suppose I am moaning about it too much if it has left this impression on you.

I can tell that reading more is going to help me a lot with this. The prologue of Lord Of The Rings already enlightened me by the way it world-builds this entire, collective race of people in a way that endears me to them, almost as if the whole group of them was a "character" with a personality that moves and does things like a single character would. I guess part of it is that I didn't realize how helpful and fun it is to generalize my fictional group of people before I then go in and show the nuances--a similar epiphany I had to writing individual characters

Hi Zeekers! You may have already thought about this, but have you ever considered adding Steam achievements to Lethal Company? I think they would give players more goals and a reason to keep coming back. Thanks for making such an awesome game!

Brilliant and insightful take, Mastrbaitr.
