Modern infantry firepower won out this time. I think we only have the Canadians still to do for Shock Force, then I'll have to switch to Black Sea or Cold War.

In other news, CM's interface with reality rears it's weird, slightly disturbing head again. Obviously, it's pure coincidence that the Assad's regime fell in the real world in the same week it fell in my playthrough of the Marine campaign, but it's still a bit creepy.

This week we're on to a Basics video. Part of me wants to build off the Quataife Gorge TDG and go into planning etc, but it's probably more of a standalone video. Right now, I'm thinking about how to cover clearing buildings: that's such a common stumbling block people it probably needs a video of it's own, not a segment in the Firefight 4 video.

How to go about it could be interesting: my sense is that a lot of people get hung up on what the Americans call Battle Drill 6a, which is the very cool, photogenic room clearing thing:

The reality is that you just can't do that in CM, but you can do all the other bits of Battle Drill 6 (no 'a') where the platoon essentially creates the conditions for success of the assault team. Of course, that looks a lot less cool.

Anyway, that's this week's main effort. I also have to make a decision about whether the Winter Turn-by-Turn is ready and go and do all the important stuff for that (like, find someone to actually play against). I played a test game against myself last week and it went pretty much as I expected, so I suspect the forces are locked in and it's about time to start collecting names.

Just need to work it all through.

But, back to the polls: this week we're back to WW2. Armour Pen won last time so we're round to Arty/CAS demos and Infantry Firepower tests. Fun times!

The graphic you posted above could be straight out of Door Kickers 2 which does depict that granular level of approach to clearing a building. Indeed it's its entire premise.

I think we're going Canadian- back to Moderns this week. I probably need to do the Italians at some point though, even if just for the meme value

This is the traditional doctrinal battle drill 6 method of room clearing, but hardly the 'only' or 'best' way. It's simply a pretty good way of teaching lots of people. Strong walling, clearance by fire (potentially in combination with the 'call out' method' are all alternative and situationally superior methods and some which can be replicated in CM. As the adage goes: the best way to clear a stairwell is to walk out side, pick up a radio, and drop a 500lbs bomb on the building. Now the stair way is clear. Modern Tactical Shooting youtube channel has a very good breakdown of the evolution of CQB tactics from the 90's through middle GWOT.

According to John Spencer's book "Understanding Urban Warfare". The Philippines Marines during the Battle for Marawi learned that if the entry party did everything right they would be walking through rubbles and bodies in the rooms they are breaching into rather than devolving into an attritional fight inside the rooms.

Although CM is not really a "Modern GWOT" game. A lot of tactical adaptations in Middle Eastern operations have been left out in Shock Force (largely because it was made in the early 2000s and is largely based on the early days of 2003 invasion of Iraq and 2006 Lebanon war). Tunnels and other methods of hardening preselected strongpoints is left out, which is somewhat unfortunate if the engine is to simulate the early-middle stages of the Syrian Civil war. Capabilities brought by commercial can be partially replicated with the air support framework. But still, FPV is a complicated system. Back at the discord I once made a post of "Combat Mission Shock Force 3", which was about a hypothetical invasion of Syria in a fictional 2027 by Turkey. The scenario is based on what was happening in 2023, and plenty of my observations seemed to be strangely prophetic.(although I never predicted HTS to be capable of taking on Damascus alone).

Canadians! Yeah!
