Thing may be looking up... but all that Soviet armour is about to arrive. 3 TOW jeeps and 2 Dragons vs 3 T72s and 5 BMPs? Hard to call. Red pen guaranteed.Timestamps:00:00 Turn 1526:59 Turn 1643:00 Turn 171:04:36 Turn 181:35:28 Turn 191:58:39 Turn 202:13:32 Turn 21

Oh boy The literal tonnage of weaponry is definitely on the Soviet side

Ben Kerry

Oxide does his best…

Ben Kerry

The Soviets should have used their smoke launchers before attempting that convoy rush in hindsight. More hindsight: aggressive recon by fire is always worth it with buildings. And that hill should be pasted with whatever weapon you have on area fire. Maybe a more “elastic” defense could work for US infantry where they bail out from buildings after the initial firefight. Preservation of force and morale is more important than a building (could try a counterattack as the airstrike starts) Can anyone explain how “emergency” fire works? It might be worth it here since all’s needed right now is just mortar rounds flying down at that general direction

GLG

The F4s couldn't have wished for a more dramatic entrance. Decisive or disappointing--or dare I say, disastrous? Stay tuned for the next episode!

Poxyquotl

My time to shine! or burn dramatically!

UsuallyHaplessVideos

Emergency fire is fire without spotting rounds. So... bad. It would be better in this context to send the mortar team off in a jeep and get them some high ground so they can direct fire.

Chodester

Criteria for Immediate suppression successful effects is enemy suppression, anything else is a bonus

Ben Kerry

OK, MANPADs don't have that great of a hit chance I think

Ben Kerry

The grey-green BTR rolled north towards the hills before anyone was able to react. The wheels spun and kick up a wall of dust trailing behind the vehicle. The scout team by the wall fired three LAWs, all of which fell short. Spc Jimmy Chunga 's team watched in horror as the green metal beast found its way towards them, one burst would be all that takes to knock out the only effective anti-tank asset the company has. Spc "Chap" Chapman took a deep breath and fired his Dragon. The recoil almost knocked him off balance despite all the training and anticipation, but he managed to refocus on the sight system and lock the enemy BTR in the aiming reticle. Jimmy was sure he was about to die when he saw a bright white dot flying towards the Russian vehicle, a catastrophic explosion ensures. He knew he would remember this moment for the rest of his life...

GLG

Oh yeah there's MANPADs, right! I was thinking more blue on blue stuff.

A miracle did not happen, Max "Comrade" Parkin, the private who is a "filthy red" in his political views, is cut down by the burst of gunfire and joins his fellow brothers of first squad. At the end of his life he thought of his mother working two jobs to keep him and his brother afloat. Then his body hit the cold grey water of Persian gulf.

Ben Kerry

Pvt. Penner do not want to die, every moment of his life flash in front of his life. His joys, pain, and all that defined him what he is. He feel all of it slipping out of him into nothingness, he is about to die like everyone around him. He raised his hands up and screamed on top of his lungs: "I surrender!" Soviets in green uniform soon surrounded him with their guns pointing, he might have wet himself, or not, he don't care, he's about to die. "Please! Just don't kill me!" All that he believed is shattering, he just don't want to die this way, no heroic, just another body ripped open by streams after streams of machinegun bullets. One of them lunged forward and pinned him to the ground, his nose is bleeding. Another went and kicked his rifle away. They began shouting to each other in Russian, he don't understand any of these, he just want to live.

Ben Kerry

Two more Soviets broke out of the bush, Burns hit one of them with his M16, and the defenders on the right of him got the other one.

Turn 17: The soon-to-dies of 2/2nd platoon lay among their dead. Private Romitas took his knees and fired at the crossing Soviet infantry to no success. A BTR rolls up, Spc. "Oxide" Oxley loaded a 40mm HEDP up his M203 and fired at the BTR. It's like fighting a tank with a pistol, they are doomed, common sense reminded Oxley that this will only provoke the BTR to turn its turret and kill everyone, yet somehow the BTR stopped moving and soon crewmen began hopping out the hatches, Oxide certainly did his best.

Ben Kerry

Turn 18: A T-72 travels down the road, the violence has escalated. Three TOW missiles have been shot at the metal ogre, yet it keep driving forward like some sort of unstoppable force of nature

Ben Kerry

The 2nd platoon is all wiped out. One of them is executed.

Ben Kerry

Turn 19: 3B's team destroy a BMP, a Dragon knocked out a T-72. "KrazyPenguin" and the rest of Dragon team engaging in brutal close combat with Soviet scouts The hectic CQB is definitely movie material

Ray L

If he lives, the Soviet commander will be sacked for incorrect use of his 120mm mortars. Doctrine said to use them to suppress (or block with smoke) the enemy on the high ground (which he should have presumed would be ATGM teams). Instead, he directed mortar fire at the objective … sturdy multi-story buildings which would be little harmed by the mortars, even upon a direct hit. The tanks and IFVs were capable of providing all the fire support the assault infantry would need.

UsuallyHaplessVideos

To be fair, the fire missions here take some time to call in and there probably weren't any living Americans on the high ground when he made the call.

Ben Kerry

Soviet artillery pains: So many guns, so little observers...

Ben Kerry

By pounding the objective with mortar he also prevents US infantry from bailing out if they try to employ an elastic defence (my tactic with using light infantry typically include firing from a building then withdraw to the back of the building. Essentially staying one building away from the enemy.

Ray L

Yeah, that’s what the former colonel kept repeating to his new friends in the gulag.

Ben Kerry

OK, the commander of this is a Lt. Col I think (OK, if what I know about Soviet style command culture is accurate it might have the regiment commander himself micromanaging this thing with the "Americanskis")

Ben Kerry

"I’m afraid to hold a gun now. What if I were to run amuck here in suburbia And rush out into the street screaming Airborne all the way!’ And shoot the milkman. " Charles M. Purcell, "In That Age When We Were Young", 1972

Andrew Offen

Andrew fires 2 TOWs for 2 BMP kills. What a legend he is says Andrew Offen 😂

Ben Kerry

Want a character sketch?

Andrew Offen

That could be amusing. A little twist for you - I am Australian

Nicholas Shaler

My family fought Communism in the 1960's, 70's, and 80's. Makes sense that one of us wouldn't make it out of one of the clashes.

Ben Kerry

Want a story of how 1st Lt. Shaler fought to the bitter end?

Ben Kerry

Specialist Andrew Offen has just served long enough to be in charge of the TOW launcher when the war came. The tall nineteen-year-old Australian-American paratrooper lived in Orange County for his entire life after his parents moved to the states in 1962. Never really into army stuff before a nasty breakup at the end of high school and a particularly manipulative recruiter. All the memories are flashing in front of his eyes, every nerve in his brain is strained and torn trying to fight off the fear when his head narrowly avoided a 125mm shell. The whizzing sound is like a whiplash from that distance. Still, he managed to keep his cool, focusing his eyes and hands on the aiming reticle and trying to imagine him guiding that little white dot towards the BMP a kilometer away before the rotary reloader of the T-72 finished its job and turn everyone on the jeep into mangled corpses. He cannot run away right now. It feels like an eternity before the dot connects. Pvt. "Ivan" Pash violently kicks the valve to bring the jeep downslope away from the sight of the Russian murder machines. A thundering explosion kicked off on the frontal slope seconds later, he can't believe he survived, for now. How many Russian-Americans are there in the 82nd?

Ben Kerry

In the little hole on the ground Lt. Shaler clings to his rifle as his platoon is being cut down one by one. He looked at his watch again, so many regrets, what if he haven't done this and instead that, maybe there will still be survivors, he has failed his men. But the plan still sticks, the 2nd platoon has delayed the enemy more than enough down there. He looked at the disemboweled body of his platoon sergeant Spencer "Split" Thompson, the 14.5mm rounds has practically torn his limbs out and cut him in half, all he can see is a bloody hole with brain tissues splattering out. He spun around and saw three Soviet soldiers with AKs. A couple of shots echoed in the empty Iranian tarmac, the end of the 44 men of 2nd platoon, A Company, Task Force Ridgeway

Scrolling through the comments was a mistake (spoilers - doh). Just wanted to acknowledge the Red Dwarf reference in Turn 18
